This was a wonderful little arts and crafts gift/gallery shop, much like one in my hometown that also started as a local artist co-op in the 70’s. We had intended to just browse but we immediately saw some items we could not do without, all handmade and guaranteed to fit in our carry-ons. The rest is history. The staff was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, especially in wrapping our fragile purchase. Everything got home just fine.

More of a store than an art gallery(which they bill themselves as), 16 Hands has both decorative and functional art pieces for sale. You’ll recognize the work of some — especially the jewelry– from local street fairs and festivals. Love the blown glass, but the prices are a big high.

This is one of my favorite places to buy gifts. They have a few things that are basically standards in the store, but a ton of things that are constantly changing and make it very fun to stop in and look. Yes they can be a bit pricey, but they always have fun unique things. And the best part is local artists! I absolutely love their card section in the back. They have beautiful handmade cards that I love buying for special occasions like weddings. Next to the cards are the«StoryPeople» prints and wall hangings. They are absolutely adorable with beautiful quotes and are always fun to look at. A definite must stop downtown

Sixteen Hands is one of a kind — representing many local artists with a constantly changing inventory and truly unique art & beauty. They also represent a few artists that also show at the Ann Arbor Art Fair(Michael Orr and his lovely ravens, for example). I have to hold myself back not to explore this wonderful store each paycheck, because inevitably, I will always find something I like. If you are in the market for a stunningly beautiful, handpainted and hand-oxidized copper/metal watches, they carry the Watchkraft brand. The moment I saw the one they had in the store I had to have it – the owner has one he wears daily.

Ok, so why did I never enter this place until a few days ago? Because, quite frankly, their window display and entrance area does not look appealing at all. It looks like… fairy metal or something. However, wanting to visit a fresh place on Main Street, I walked in with the babe and his daddy, and was pleasantly surprised. What was awesome? Their kids section was pretty cool, very carefully selected items for the home and for gifts. I wound up buying these coasters made out of vinyl record centers.(We have one for the Wiz, awesome!). They have a beautiful and stylish selection of journals and cards. If you walk in go towards the back where the good stuff is.

Sixteen hands equals eight artists? Well, the name isn’t very definitive. A wide variety of hand made art work and various greeting cards do make this an amusing gallery for browsing, gift buying, or self-indulgence.
