This yarn store was the most welcoming and least pretentious yarn store I’ve been to. As a self-taught knitter who doesn’t have many other knitter friends, I can sometimes feel rather lost, even though I’ve been knitting for ten years now. The Spun staff were friendly and patient. They offered to wind my yarn whike I waited(plus coffee and cookies!). They also had patterns filed in binders and had signs saying they could look up patterns for you. It felt exactly like a local business ought to feel like. The selection is high-quality and the store is also organized very well. I will definitely be back for more project materials!

I came in after a coworker suggested it when I had time to kill between two classes, and let me tell you, I’m going to be in trouble knowing that this place isn’t too far away from me. They have beautiful fibers here! Their staff is friendly, they have local and imported yarns, and also have classes offered for newbies as well as the men and women who have cast some yarn on a time or two. I mean, when I walked in, the gent behind the counter was knitting away. It doesn’t get much cooler than that! Plus, they had my favorite Manos Del Uruguay on sale! I purchased two skeins, went home and bypassed all of the other yarn that I have in my house, and started a new project because I couldn’t resist the gorgeous local yarn that I purchased from Spun. I will definitely be back.

Really cute yarn/knitting shop in Kerrytown(in the former home of Found which has since moved downstairs). I’m not much of a knitter(I’ve only ever had the patience to make a couple of scarves in the past) but my aunt really loves it and is also quite good at it. When I was looking to get her something for Christmas this past year my husband reminded me that Spun had opened so I went there to pick something out. They had a ton of lovely yarns from local Michigan makers to across the US and global in a variety of really lovely colors and price points. Tons of accessories like needles, patterns, yarn caddies, needle cases, pins, tins, you name it. There’s something for everyone – from an experienced knitter(like the staff in the store) to intermediate knitters(like my aunt) to someone who hasn’t picked up needles in a few years(like myself). Those who fall in the latter category will definitely be inspired to strive towards the former! They also have classes, seating to come and knit and hang out in the store during open hours, drop in group sessions, etc. Very community driven to boot! Picking out yarn or knitting gear for other people is hard so in the end I decided to just get her a gift card. I prefer to always pick out my gifts for people than buy those but in a shop as cool as Spun getting to shop and browse there is also part of the gift.
