I have had cold subs from Uncle D’s. Great to grab when you’re on the run. You can also eat there, at the tables. Today I tried the hot meatball parmigiana sub. I should have gone with one or two of the pizza slices, since I wanted lunch to be *fast.* But I also wanted to see if they could match my favorite grinder shop up north. So I had to wait while it got all melty in the pizza oven. My memory of my fave grinder is admittedly very stiff competition that will be hard to match. Uncle D’s grinder was OK. The bread is a little bit dense.(which I prefer) It had a mild sourdough flavor. Had some sear marks from being in the oven. The cheese was nicely chewy where it had leaked out the side and met the oven’s heat. The meatballs were nice. The marinara was awesome. Packaged in foil to keep it warm while I drove home. Came with a couple of dill spears. But I think it’s a bit pricey($ 6.99) for what you get. So my recommendation is to stick with the ready-made pizza slices, both for value and quickness. Grab the menu, because there are coupons in there. Call in your order before you head out. Uncle D’s is in a party store that sells an extensive selection of beer, wine & other booze. So if you get your order to go, you can add other stuff to your haul.

I am from NY but go to school in MI, and I go out of my way from ann arbor to go get pizza here. It is the only thing that is comparable to NY pizza, and the only place with good garlic knots like a traditional pizzeria in NY. Delicious with many specialty pizzas such as zitti. People in MI seem to just settle for the chain pizza places, so give the disgusting chains like Dominos and Marco’s a rest and go to uncle d’s!
