I used their delivery via grubhub and I live pretty far(4 miles away). They were about 20 late from the quoted time but very understandable considering I ordered during peak dinner time and rush hour. The food was packaged well and tasted great. The one dish I ordered was sold out and the guy called me almost immediately after I placed the order to ask if I can pick something else. I picked something that’s a dollar more and he was fine with it. I only tried their real Chinese«home cooked» dishes. The pork stew with clear noodle is delicious and like something my mom makes(my mom is an amazing cook, I unfortunately didn’t inherit the talent). The Napa cabbage with tofu is super light and again a very good and simple dish. Their spring Onion pancakes are flaky which is the right texture and again, I would say pretty authentic. I hope they’ll continue to be willing to deliver to my house. I’ll make sure I order my food before the peak meal hours to avoid long wait.

I goofed. I reviewed based on eating it hot. I love cold Chinese food. Except for this. One dish was essentially inedible — I suppose I could have eaten it if I were a starving refugee — and I threw it out. The other dish was suitable only for drunk dining, the kind where when you check the mostly empty container you have no memory of having eaten it. From now on, no carry-out reviews until I’ve had cold leftovers

I saw all these good reviews about this restaurant, so I decided to give it a try. The experience was extremely disappointing. We ordered stir fried garlic sprouts with meat, which was suggested by the waitress. The garlic sprouts were super, hard, had so much fun chewing them. The meat was almost all fat! The other one we got was garlic bean sprouts, also pretty hard but better than the previous one. What came out to surprise us was the price. This veggie dish cost $ 18(something, almost $ 19)!!! Although it was our fault for not checking price before ordering the dish, but I would never ever expect $ 18 for that dish. Btw, the other three dishes we got are all around $ 10 to $ 12, which is normal. Never going back there again. If you do go there, please avoid those two dishes at least.

We tried Hunan Gate on a recommendation from a Chinese friend. We weren’t disappointed. We ordered from their traditional Chinese menu. It seems that there is a collection of different flavors of China. The cumin beef is good although a bit salty. The tofu, string beans, and steamed dumplings were great. We’ve never gone on a weekend but during the week there was plenty of parking on Fairfax Dr.

We just had lunch there today. We ordered the mushroom soup, the celery and bean curd, and the double cooked pork. The food was ok, nothing out of the ordinary. However, the service was really bad, which prompted me to write this review. I ordered the sautéed peashoot and the waitress said«no.» Just plain«no.» Then after I asked why, she said«we don’t have it.» She was really nasty the rest of the time and it ruined my meal. We couldn’t finish our meal, so we packed our stuff and left after 25 min. We are currently looking for apartments to buy in the area and have also been trying out restaurants. There’s one thing for sure, we won’t come back to Hunan gate. We will not recommend it to our friends either.

We actually walked past this restaurant a few times, dismissing it as just another cheap Chinese-American buffet place but finally decided to stop in on a lark. The décor is as you would expect from your run-of-the-mill Chinese eatery, but aside from the typical Chinese-American menu, they also have an authentic Chinese menu. The«Napa with Fresh Tofu» stew I ordered could have easily fed a family of four and was reminiscent of home-style comfort food. The ingredients were so simple, yet the broth was so flavorful. We also had the«West Lake Style Beef Soup» and sour«Pork Cabbage Dumplings.» Nothing was greasy, and the flavors were unpretentious yet satisfying. If I was a resident of the area, I would most likely have returned to sample more of the authentic menu offerings.

The food is bland and inconsistent. The thickness of the egg drop soup is like eating egg yolks exclusively. Mongolian Beef has next to no flavor other than the abundance of onions. Sesame and sweet and sour choices are fried yet somehow not at all crispy. I’ll need to look elsewhere for good but speedy Chinese food.

Love Hunan Gate! They have a great combination of American Chinese and more traditional Chinese take out dishes. They do dumplings really well.

Late delivery. Food was terrible. Crab Rangoon was not a crab Rangoon, it had some weird mozzarella with spinach. It was also stale and tough. Crispy duck was neither edible not crispy. It was salty and dry. Sigh…

Since I’ve been here many times and the dishes are OK, I made a delivery order through Unilocal 24 tonight. I’m very hungry and expected the same good dishes as before. However, they are completely different and it’s a disaster! They put a lot of peppers in Kong pao chicken and the sour spicy soup is way too sour. This is a cheat! The dishes made in restaurant and delivery are completely different. I’ll never ever try Unilocal 24 and go to hunan gate again! ;(

My childhood favorite Chinese restaurant. Hot and sour soup and Szcheun Chicken. I don’t think I’ve changed my order in 20+ years. It’s just that good:)

Was very disappointed. My egg roll was burnt and the sesame chicken wasn’t cooked all the way. Now I’m at work starving :(

I wish I could give zero stars. I ordered from this place and the food never came. I called to check on it at 1 hour past delivery due time and again at 2 hours, but they just assured me «it was on its way.» At 3.5 hours in they called me and had the audacity to tell me it was my fault for not cancelling it. Why would I cancel it when you told me it was on its way?! The should have just told me to cancel it the first time I came if they were not going to make the delivery. Such a waste of time and terrible customer service.

This is a surprising good Chinese restaurant in Arlington. For folks that have work at the National Science Foundation, this is just a few minutes walk(right across from the subway station and the Hilton). In the past I’ve eaten the lunch buffet here and it is basically the typical Americanized Chinese lunch buffet that is indistinguishable from any other American Chinese restaurant. However, during my last visit I ordered from the Chinese menu and it’s like night and day. The food is so much better and quite authentic. On a recent visit to DC, for dinner I was dining alone and tried the Ma Po Fish and Tofu, which was different from the traditional Ma Po Tofu with minced pork, but absolutely delicious. The next afternoon I was there again with colleagues who were from China and we went there for lunch and they ordered a whole bunch of dishes with different styles. We had fish filets in hot chili sauce(which was more Schezwan style), spicy but wonderful. It needed a bit of salt but once that was added the spicy flavors all came to life. We also ordered another pork dish with various vegetables in a brown sauce for 4 people to share. The pork was flavorful and tender. There were also an assortment of delicious vegetables which were great. All in all a wonderful surprise, just avoid the lunch buffet and ask for the Chinese menu!

Best chicken and braised pork I have ever had in America, even better than those in flushing, NY! It is super tasty, great value, and well-served with hand-pulled noodle. Their prices are affordable, a great bargain that you cannot find at any other Chinese food restaurant. Authentic food and nice people, definitely will visit again! Highly recommend. After the meal, they offered their home made complimentary green been soup, which is chill and sweet. All my friends love it.

I like this place. Its so close to where I live and the food was top notch. My friend and I got the Mopu Tofu And Fish and Beef with Cumin and the beef was next level. We also had the Chinese broccoli(a different vegetable than broccoli) and that was excellently cooked. I also had the house Chinese beer and it was excellent. My friend had the iced tea and the waiter was a little too eager to refill his drink over and over again. They also weren’t able to split a check two ways between credit cards which was a bit of a nuisance. Hence the 4 stars

Found myself at Hunan Gate with my family when dinner reservations at Founding Farmers fell through. This small mom and pop restaurant is located on the end of my sister’s block, so we chose it for its location. The atmosphere is dim, which gives the entire place a dingy feel, but the service was prompt. The meal started off on a less than stellar note with the hot and sour soup– not fresh at all. Hardly silken, the tofu strands were tough and too chewy. It was obvious the soup had been stewing/reheating for a long time. The best dish was the sesame chicken entrée. It had nice tangy flavor and the large chicken pieces were very crispy. You’ll be hard-pressed to convince me against fried chicken though, so consider me a partial critic. The fried rice was ok but the Peking duck was pretty dry. Overall, Hunan Gate was a convenient option, but not impressive in any other respect.

Come here for the Chinese menu They were nice enough to take pictures of the food and translate all the dishes on the Chinese menu so that it was accessible to everyone, this would be an opportunity to take advantage of their generosity. What do you get? –Pork belly –Green beans –Dumplings –Whatever looks good to you
