Hands down the best ice cream in Northern Virginia.

I live right down the road from this little ice cream shop and it has satisfying my sweet tooth for the last year. They only close for a short time in the winter which keeps me happy whenever I’m craving a hot fudge sundae. Did I mention that it is homemade?

Try the chocolate chip coconut ice cream! The ice cream is very flavorful & they have interesting options. Cheap dessert that won’t disappoint.

There’s really good frozen hot chocolate here. It’s hot chocolate mix, milk, and ice blended together.

Cute little ice cream shop with a good selection of homemade ice creams. Toby’s is definitely our go to for dessert and birthday ice cream cakes :) Updating my review to give 5stars. If you like ice cream cake this is the place to go. Got my sons second birthday cake and they freakin nailed it!

Not that impressed. Read the reviews and it sounded pretty good. Tiny little place, my wife and I shared a cookie sundae. I wouldn’t go back.

Lone employee(sullen) was playing some rap station on the PA system – not really pleasant for sipping coffee in the morning. Prices are high – shakes/malts are around $ 5. A quart of ice cream was I think $ 9. For one quart! Didn’t give a receipt either. «Cappuccino» was misspelled on the wall menu behind the counter – scary for a coffee shop.

Delicious ice cream but one time we arrived 1 minute after closing and even though they had people inside eating, we were turned away. I had out of town guest and one was pregnant and was craving ice cream. I had talked about how great Toby was so was super disappointed that they were unable to try it. I wouldn’t normally let this effect my rating but the guy who turned us away wasn’t very nice about it and I was a bit offended

I got the white chocolate blueberry and honestly I could barely taste any blueberry or white chocolate :/actually it was just tasteless :(I was so sad that I wasted calories on something that tasted like nothing :( Friend said strawberry also barely tasted like strawberry

I live across the street from Toby’s and have probably been there about 1 trillion times by now. I’m updating my review to mention that Toby’s is my FAVORITE place in the area to get iced coffee. Why, you ask? I’ll tell you! 1) They use COFFEE ice cubes instead of regular ice cubes, so your iced coffee never gets watered down, no matter how melted it is! 2) They always offer simple syrup — who in their right mind wants granulated sugars floating at the bottom of their iced coffee? Not me! 3) Good coffee to drink black if you like it that way — not too bitter, not too weak, just perfect. 4) No pretentious snobs here! Friendliness guaranteed! 5) Inexpensive and totally worth every cent. 6) Pro Tip: You can put espresso(or any other flavor) ice cream in it if you want: D …Having moved from Philadelphia, land of a zillion wonderful coffee shops, I have been absolutely perplexed by the lack of good iced coffee in Arlington! What gives?! Thank you, beloved Toby’s, for doing it right: D

Pretty good homemade ice cream. I am a huge ice cream snob so I’m super picky about the quality & taste. The first visit, I had a regular size of one scoop of Mint Chocolate Chip & White Chocolate Blueberry each. Both of which were okay, I thought the White Chocolate Blueberry wasn’t as flavorful as it could be because after a few bites it started to taste like nothing(My friend got the same & she said the same exact thing). The Mint Chocolate Chip was good, not super minty & whole chocolate chips(Mint Chocolate Chip is my favorite flavor so I was a little disappointed because it wasn’t the best & I didn’t not like the whole chocolate chips). I also asked for a cake come but the guy gave me it in a cup. I was kind of annoyed because I felt rushed & we didn’t even have a chance to ask to try any flavors. The second visit, I had a regular size of one scoop of Oreo & Salted Caramel each. Yum! Both were so delicious & flavorful. Definitely my new go-to flavors here. The ice cream was thick & creamy in consistency. I got the cake cone this time so yay! Overall, good homemade ice cream. The ice cream is thick, creamy & mostly flavorful. I wish they had more flavors like Black Cherry or more adventurous flavors. The customer service is hit-or-miss, I’m guessing from previous reviews. They have a 15% off check-in, which is awesome. I will definitely be stopping by here often since it is convenient to where I work.

Yummy bittersweet chocolate, nice folks, but don’t kid yourself– it’s ice cream. There’s no frozen yogurt here. Still the ice cream was quite good. Not super chunky if you like that as I do, but small little bits of chocolate mixed in the ice cream. Husband had chocolate brownie and it was nice, but again smaller bits of brownie as opposed to larger chunks. It’s a preference thing. Although the servers were nice i thought they were a bit distracted for how busy they were. Another customer and I shared a laugh as we stood and waited for the two people at the counter to take our orders after trying tastes. I knew right away but they were chatting. Nonetheless friendly. Looking forward to trying their frozen hot chocolate.

Friendly staff, great ice cream and don’t sleep on the coffee either. After discovering this place my wife and I made a rule to only purchase ice cream from Toby’s. You can also buy their travel mug and get $ 0.88 refills on coffee. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Ummm homemade ice-cream at a cute mom and pop shop for 2 bucks and some pocket change? Hello Toby, you just became this girl’s best friend. The ice-cream here is the perfect consistency, creamy, and with the right amount of sweetness. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Usually, I try not to sample more than 2 flavors from an ice-cream shop because I always get the judgmental stink eye or annoyed staff member, but the guy that helped me here was very inviting and encouraging of my sampling binge. I sampled the pistachio, mint chocolate chip, white chocolate blueberry and fresh banana. All of the flavors were great, but I settled on the one that was recommended by the guy that was helping me out. «Espresso chip is one of our top sellers.» he said. «I’ll take 3 scoops in a cake cone.» I said.(Okay, I’m kidding… Although this is what I should have said because this flavor ended up being amazingly good. I realistically opted for one scoop in a cake cone). My one scoop in a cake cone only came out to be a mere $ 2.26 after tax and the check-in deal I used from Unilocal that knocked off an extra 15% off! I was in awe because I was used to paying $ 5 bucks(aka an arm and a leg because you can get a half gallon at the store for this price) for a simple ice-cream cone. The price made the ice-cream taste even better knowing I didn’t have to burn a hole in my wallet for a tasty summer indulgence. i was a bit disappointed they did not have their more exotic flavors(avocado or taro) that were advertised on the website, but the gentleman that helped me told me it was because one of their special ice-cream machines was temporarily out of commission. All in all, I will definitely be returning sometime in the near future, especially when that ice-cream machine is back in business!

Cute little local place in Arlington. We found it via Unilocal on our way home from a Nationals game. Our group of four tried cookie dough, Oreo, and chocolate coconut. We really enjoyed the second two, the cookie dough could have used a little more«dough». Complimentary water is a nice touch, prices are reasonable and it’s got a nice little family/neighborhood vibe.

I love homemade ice cream! We came with another couple and their 2 babies, so I wish the store was a little wider, or had more of an indoor seating area, plus the bathroom had lots of supplies stored inside and was a little gross. Other than that, very good.

Ice cream is difficult to get quite right. Not only do you need to have the right consistency and sweetness, you have to have the just the right variety fo flavors — not too few, not too many. The atmosphere of the shop has to be inviting without being too saccarine; you need to have just the right amount of background cooing from birds as they settle down for the evening; the time-consuming process of coercing just a few evening stars to emerge across the cerulean-to-midnight blue sky; and you need to have enough napkins. Toby’s Homemade gets all of this right. They have a good selection of interesting flavors and even offer samples so you get just the flavor you like. Although, I’m not a huge fan of the space, the Westover neighborhood is part of the experience. Sitting in a low point, the buildings and trees seem to have come to rest there decades ago like cool air in a dell overnight. The sidewalks, the benches, the hardware store with faded boxes in the window feels like it has been taken from a John Updike short story. And even if you don’t care for Updike, you get ice cream, so stop complaining. Try to pay in cash so you can tip. The guys working there were helpful with samples and will even make recommendations. I think if you asked for your ice cream to have flecks of rebar in it, they would grab and angle grinder from behind the counter and go find some half-finished concrete. They didn’t mind waiting for the kids to choose a flavor and seemed to genuinely enjoy the joy of others… unlike my middle school social studies teacher who lived on «diet coke» and the fading dreams of children. I would recommend that anyone looking for a couple hundred calories of ice cream and nostalgia should head over before the summer is over. If possible, bring along your childhood crush and have her sit on a nearby fence with some cool kids, paying only mild and pitying attention to your longing stares. Bitch.
