This place is amazing, has some dishes that are way better than DINTAIFUNG. Yes, it is a hole in the wall, and service is a little on the slow side, but the staff/owners are very kind and sweet. Every dish we had was amazing. The pork potstickers were awesome in texture. So many great dishes to choose from. All the the small plate size, floating around $ 7 per plate. EXCELLENTFIND! I will be back to try more of the menu!!! This place is TWOTHUMBSUP!!!

Reminds me of homestyle cooking. I came here looking for xlb because of the reviews, but I was told they didn’t have them by my server. I don’t know if it’s only a morning edition or if they just don’t sell them anymore. I ended up ordering their braised beef noodle soup which was delish after I added a little soy sauce and the portion was huuuge! All for only $ 8.70 plus tax! The downside was there wasn’t a lot of meat. I was expecting more than 3 or 4 cubed pieces of meat. The service was great here and the place was full of local Chinese residents which is always a good sign. I would say this place is comparable to that of other Shanghai style restaurants you’ll find in San Gabriel Valley. Definitely confirms all the good reviews I read about this place minus the xlb(yes, I’m still bitter about it because I drove all the way here for them)

Ready for some authentic Chinese home cooking? The food is just like mom’s! Nothing to brag about with the décor or seating. It’s a typical Chinese restaurant with decent amount of seating. Barely any wait at all! I have come several times and I have never been disappointed. I have tried the xiao long bao, bok choy with mushrooms, fried tofu and walnut shrimp. All of the dishes are excellent. The xiao long bao are tasty. Although it has a less than beautiful presentation(they always come out lopsided and floppy), they have the same rich bursts of flavor with each bite. The bok choy with mushrooms are one of my favorite dishes. The mushrooms and bok choy are stir fried enough to be evenly cooked and to seal in the flavor! The mushrooms are the best part. The fried tofu with soy sauce comes in large portions. These little crispy tofu squares are bite sized and perfectly fried. The walnut shrimp is very well made. There is a good ratio of mayo to walnut and crispy shrimp. The mayo sauce does not overwhelm the shrimp at all. For 4 people, the bill comes out to be $ 46. Totally worth it! I can’t wait to come back!

So glad I found the true Shanghainess restaurant here… food was delicious: very light n fresh. Lots of dishes reminded me the food I had when I grow up in China.

Thirteen of us enjoyed the food here. Food came out pipping hot and fresh. Just about all the dishes were ordered from the«family style» menu. Very affordable prices. The fried sole with basil was really good, one of the best. I thought the fried porkchops were tasty but too greasy, had better. All other dishes were above average to very good. Very decent portions for the prices. The only other improvement I would like to see is better quality steamed rice and an another wait staff would have made a difference. The poor server was working alone until another person from the kitchen came out to help. It’s a small mom and pop place so you have to be patient. Plenty of parking, located in a shopping plaza on south west corner of Pioneer and 183rd. English friendly. We all agreed we would certainly come back for future family meals.

I was recently introduced to this Chinese restaurant by a relative and I have already made the drive from Huntington Beach to Artesia/Cerritos twice to go back and eat there. If you are a fan of the«sweeter» Shanghainese-style Chinese food, then this is the place to go. I am a creature of habit and once I find something I like, I always get it when I return. Some highlights of items that I like there include the pork belly soup, the pork chops with their signature orange sauce(I think it’s sweet and sour?), the spare ribs with the sweet sauce, the steamed/grilled pork buns, house fried rice, steamed fish and the fried fish. Although the restaurant is small, it still have roughly 4 – 5 large round tables with lazy susans, so you can bring the whole gang for a feast. If you are coming with a large group, I would suggest making a reservation as they do take reservations over the phone. Parking is tough as the parking lot is tiny and not very well designed.

really love this restaurant, true shanghainese dishes, though some American style courses on menu. My favorite is crispy steamed pig’s feet, really tasted, crispy and delicious!!! A small problem for this dish is the hair of the pig foot is not fully removed… I do not quite like their Shanghai pastries which are a little sweeter to me. Other plates I tried are good as well but not that impressed to me as the crispy steamed pig’s feet.

I’ve been wanting to try this place for a while now and finally got the chance to do so today. I admit, I didn’t have much of an appetite going in(hence the 4-star rating), but I remembered that I had some cash burning a hole in my pocket and wanted to spend it on something worthy. Upon entering the restaurant and reviewing the menu I was really glad that the two cold dishes I really wanted(Suzhou style smoked fish and Shaoxing drunken chicken) were not only on the menu, but in smaller portions as I had also brought/dragged my sister along to sample some of the Chinese cuisine that I had gotten used to eating in Shanghai. Both of the cold dishes were spot on. The chicken brought back memories of a noisy food joint near People’s Square where finished drunken chickens were continuously being chopped up into little pieces and packaged before being grabbed by customers pushing their way through to the pick-up window. The fish, while(thankfully) less sweet than what I was used to eating, was fried just right, and — thanks to the lessened sweetness — flavored just right, reminding me of my first month in China and trying to block out the noise in the restaurant by staring out the window into the street.(Later I learned that noisy restaurants were a good thing, but that’s a story for another day.) Rounding out the sampling was a sweetened red bean paste pancake, which I admit I had never previously tried but it paired really well with the chicken. I’ll definitely be back for more, especially the xiaolongbao and shengjianbao. TL; DR: Money well spent. Good food, good food-inspired stroll down memory lane. Will return soon.

Shanghai-nese joint located in a tiny strip mall with some indian shops, pizza hut, and may’s kitchen. Parking is right outside the store and pretty easy to find. The menu is pretty extensive and has a lot of main entrees for families to share as well as dumplings, fried rice cakes, and xiao long baos. We ordered vegetarian dumplings, leek dumplings, and the fermented rice + sweet sesame filled rice balls. Dumplings were big and juicy, but pretty typical. Tasted even better with their chili sauce + soy sauce. Nothing out of the ordinary though. The sweet sesame rice balls were very delicious with just the rice amount of sweetness and enough to be shared by 3 – 4 people. *They only take card if you spend more than $ 30, but will make exceptions if you don’t have enough cash.

Bring me back to karaōke girls of Nanjing Lu, strolling in the French Concession past all the expat mopeds, massages at Dragonfly, grannies knocking me over in Xujiahui… Oh the memories of Shanghai. Shanghai Style is a throwback to the sweet Chinese dishes that Shanghai is known for. This is not an Outkast song where you go to your neighbor’s house to pick up some cooking ingredients, Shanghai food really is sweet. The pork potstickers, the veggie potstickers, steamed soup buns, kung pao chicken, chopped fish fillet… many of the dishes you order here will have sugar in it, if only just a pinch, just so you know not to mistake this for Cantonese or Szechuan. If in doubt a good Shanghainese chef will always sprinkle in some sugar! I wish I lived closer so that I could try all of their dishes… Potstickers — Pork or Veggie. Not sure if they still make the veggie ones(they were out the last time I visited), but these were my favorite. Stuffed full of that same mixture that they stick in veggie hot pockets… greens, vermicelli threads, chopped tofu… really good and more fulfilling than the pork ones(which are also very good). You can’t go wrong with either, but I always pick the veggie ones first. Xiao Long Bao — These are okay. If you are expecting Din Tai Fung, they are not at that level, but if you’re craving XLBs, they can scratch your itch. Green Onion Pancake — Good, I like them here. Chopped Fish with Corn and Pine Nuts — It’s a simple plate but I just love how they do it. Chopped fish fillet, corn, peas, carrots and pine nuts all stir fried in a savory but slightly sweet starchy sauce to go perfectly with rice. Kung Pao Chicken — Diced chicken, green peppers, water chestnuts, green onions, peanuts and red peppers. Not as sweet as how they do it at your standard Cantonese restaurant but and they also don’t flour coat the chicken before frying, which is good thing. It tasted just how I wanted to taste, with some sweetness, but not overwhelming it. Dongpo Roasted Pork Belly, Sweet Chestnut Soup, Dry Braised String Bean, Chicken with Chestnut in Hot Pot, Smoked Fish… There are so many different dishes here to try that my review is not doing them any justice. What is awesome is that they have a separate dinner special mix and match menu where you can pick many dishes for a reasonable price. 2 dishes for $ 13.95, 3 for $ 21.95, 4 for $ 27.95. The serving sizes are about the ¾ the size of the average Chinese dish size. Get a 4 dish combo for $ 28 add one more of your favorite dishes on top of that and you can feed a family of four for under $ 40. Service is fast. The restaurant is a little hard to find, as it’s in a strip mall and there’s no sign facing Pioneer, it faces 183rd more. If you aren’t in willing to dive all the way to Alhambra or San Gabriel for Shanghainese food, Shanghai Style is the way to go. Authentic standard Shanghainese fare at affordable prices all with a little sweetness thrown in for free!

Our family has been coming to this restaurant for at least 12 years, and whenever I visit home, we try to continue the tradition. Very relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. Despite their good food and service, it’s never crowded. It’s also very quiet and serene, which is a nice break from other local Chinese restaurants. Staff is always very pleasant, which is a plus. The crowd pleasers are always the xiao long bao and nian gao. But their eggplant is better than any eggplant I’ve ever had. Also open on American holidays, which is a plus!

Randomly came by here this week to pick up some to-go items to bring home. Wasn’t sure what to expect, so looked at their menu full of photos and ordered: (1) Rice cake w/preserved veggies + pork = it was OK, 3 stars, the rice cake was too soft, I’ve had better at Din Tai Fung or ROC in LA. (2) String bean, stir-fried = was OK again, 3 stars, kinda oily (3) Intestine & preserved veggies = salty! not enough intestine and way too much preserved veggies /bell peppers. It was 1:30 pm in the afternoon and there was only 2 tables of customers. Pretty quiet on a weekday afternoon. The lady at the counter was nice, gave me complimentary white rice to-go. :) It usually costs $ 0.80 cents!

I came by this spot on my wife’s recommendation… showed up with my niece and the owner gave us this look like, «oh fine… now I have to actually go to work…» He gave us that work and then went back to his newspaper and a conversation with a friend… our waitress came by and took our order… nothing elaborate… once our order was placed the guy put on his music so he could work… jazz, jazz and more jazz, the guy is a jazz nut… I loved it… and the food excellent… if you’re in the area you should check it out… simple place, great food and great music… tell them to turn it up…

ok Unilocalo maniacs, I just recently discovered the plethora of fantastic Chinese food in the city of Cerritos. I ate here for my first time yesterday and found the food to be very good prices were excellent for lunch specials 600 per plate. Had a great atmosphere was very friendly people. Even though their English was not so great they put up with a loud obnoxious Anglo like myself :-) they try real hard and their business reflex that effort. I forgot How much I really love good Chinese food

This is one of my family’s favorites restaurants! Such great homestyle authentic Chinese food, makes me feel like I’m back in China. We eat here quite often, every few weeks or so and order from the family menu, which is a great deal. Some of my faves are the seafood tofu soup, yang chow fried rice, seafood tofu hot pot, and anything kung pao.

My family and I have been going to this restaurant consistently for as long as I can remember. Compared to before the interior design is much nicer and cleaner. The walls used to be a plain being color and covered in pages of dishes you can order. No fans, no fish tank, and a less nice tv featuring Chinese game shows or news. The place can be busy on the weekends and around lunch and dinner time. And since if you eat in, it’s usually with a bug group so if you need to wait for a seat it may take a while. If you arrive in between the meal time rush, there should be minimal waiting. Also know the food might take a while to cook, depending on what you get as well. I like the service, the staff are very friendly, though their English is a little lacking, but they are still able to communicate with you. Just make sure they know what you order and everything is good. Flip up the tea pots lid to let them know you want more tea! I have a few dishes that I must always order when I go there, and that would be salt and pepper pork(jiao yian pai gu) and seafood tofu pot(hai xian dou fu bao). The salt and pepper pork used to be dry and a bit tough to chew, but I think the quality has improved a lot. The seafood is limited to cuts of soft fish, shrimp, and small cuts of oyster. The tofu is extra soft tofu deep fried then soaked in a savory sauce with carrots and mushrooms. I also get one noodle dish. There’s the round flour noodle, flat rice noodle, or the crunchy noodle – I don’t remember the names unfortunately. If you have a big dinner group, you can get their soy-braised/red cooked pork(zhu rou ti pang). It’s well cooked, the sauce nice and sweet, with a big portion of meat and fat. I haven’t had it in a while, so I’m not sure how it tastes now compared to before. Personally after going here so often for almost every occasion, I really like the taste. Overall the flavor is pretty strong, so you should chow down with plenty of rice. Sometimes the food can be a by oily, if you are worried about that. The price is fairly reasonable, maybe a bit on the higher end, but I think the food is worth it. Also bring cash if you think you’ll spend less than $ 30(so four or so dishes), if you use card you’ll be charged a fee.

I must say I was extremely skeptical coming here(based on it’s appearance from the outside… yes I judge a book by it’s cover) but I was pleasantly surprised upon entering. I came here for lunch to celebrate Chinese New Year… I was the only«non-Chinese» person in the entire place, no one even spoke a word of English. Thankfully I had my Chinese friends with me to read me the menu and order for me. I loved it, very cool experience for me. This place is true authentic Chinese food, nothing«Americanized» about it. Service was top notch and fast, food was delicious and fresh and prices are WAYMORE than fair! Highly recommended and I will be returning!

I used to come here with the family back when I was in middle school but haven’t been back here since recently. WOW it has definitely improved service wise and taste wise. Sad to say that for some reason it’s almost never busy, but hey shorter wait times! The portions are generous and the prices are fair, especially compared to the other Chinese restaurants in the same plaza. A family dinner here usually runs us $ 30 – 40 with leftovers for lunch tomorrow. Before we came here, we used to go to Yummy Boba on the other side of the plaza, but since then we wont be going back to Yummy Boba anytime soon. The prices here are much more fair, the quality of food is better, and it is less oily here. I’ve been to Shanghai twice myself and the food is definitely comparable. I have yet to try more on their menu but so far everything has been delicious! They made my favorite soup, West Lake Beef Soup, better than ALL the Chinese restaurants I’ve been to! Just the right amount of each ingredient and the beef was so fresh and tender. I know this place doesn’t look that promising from the outside but you will not regret going here! So far, there has been only one dish, the Ti Pang Pork, I did not enjoy because the pork was a little too rough. But everything else has been delicious! I would recommend the Braised Fatty Soy Sauce Pork, Beef Broccoli, West Lake Beef Soup(of course), Garlic Spinach, and String Beans. This is AUTHENTIC Chinese food, so you cant go wrong with ordering any of the famous dishes like Kung Pao Shrimp or Chicken. Many pros, but one con I can think of: Bring cash unless you plan on spending more than $ 30 here. Overall, this place is a GO! Definitely give this place a chance if you enjoy authentic Chinese food, you wont regret it!

Bleh, I had a family dinner here and my parents and relatives quite enjoyed this restaurant. However, my cousins and I did not, and spent the whole night poking fun at the dishes :). Simply put, I just don’t think we are fans of Shanghai style Chinese food — for me personally, it’s either too flavorful or not flavorful enough. Our dishes included: handful of appetizers(chicken, duck, fish, candied walnuts), fried seaweed fish, sea cucumber, mushrooms on top of veggies, crab, shrimp, bean curd, soup — to name a few. What was generally enjoyed was the soup — a simple, clear meat broth with bean curd, meat, and fat. The candied walnuts were also a hit and a good munchie, and it ran out too soon(too bad it wasn’t bottomless — do Asians do that?). The sea cucumber was either a love/hate, with me downing it just because of the collagen(very gelatinous texture but so good for the skin!) My cousins also enjoyed the fried seaweed fish — it was light and fluffy with a definite taste of seaweed batter, and also good beer food ;). The dessert of small glutton rice balls and various nuts in a sweet soup was also a hit(thought I wish there were more rice balls, less nuts). Though I personally wasn’t a fan of most of the food and cannot attest to it as I do not appreciate it, I can state that the customer service was good. They allowed us to BYOB(and tons of it, at that), refrigerated our cake for us, provided us with bottle openers, etc. They even allowed our party to stay late® and didn’t shoo us out. In that respect, their review up’s to 3 stars :).
