Navy Federal Credit Union

I like this branch better than all the others. You have face to face interaction with the teller, and not behind a monitor with s chute for transactions. All the frontline staff are so friendly and welcoming… Basically consistent in their outstanding customer service all the time. I requested for fairly new or good condition bills and the teller took every step to make that happen and really personalized the services I need. What more can you say except AWESOME!!!

Excellent bank, excellent location. I had to go inside the other day the deposit some money and the staff was friendly and I was in and out within minutes! This is one of the most positive bank experiences I’ve had.

It’s a great Navy Federal! Good parking and the staff are very helpful! I’ve never had a problem at this location.

I have belonged to credit unions for years, and I have yet to have a complaint against Navy Federal. I most always go to the Navy Fed in Ashburn because it is quick and convenient. The staff there is very friendly but they do not waste time. They get you in and out as soon as they can in the nicest manner. I definitely recommend this bank to others looking for a good credit union.

I’ve been a Navy Federal member for about a year and a half and as of now I am absolutely a fan and currently don’t have any issues.
This particular location isn’t very big inside but is quite reasonably sized. Also seeing as though it is never really super busy inside I guess it’s current size is doable. Just an fyi though because of the layout it seems like it could become a bit chaotic if it ever gets extremely busy. Luckily for me, because it isn’t busy when I enter performing any sort of teller transaction never takes long. I’m normally in and out within about 10 – 15 (of course this time is dependent on teller availability and busyness).
When you enter this particular location you immediately faced with a representative who can assist with any questions or needs. However, it isn’t necessary to speak with the representative if you need to perform any sort of financial transactions.
One of the main reasons that I love become Navy Federal, which persuaded me to become a member, and what separates them from other financial banking competitors are their rates (i.e. credit cards, mortgage loans, auto loans, etc…). Upon doing my research it seems that, «Navy Federal» (among other financial credit union institutions) give the best rates for the different types of loan. I mean when you are living in a world that is structured around your credit it is probably wise to go with an institution who will be willing to give you the best loan at the best rate to help you build and sustain your credit. Right?
One thing that I guess I consider the gift and curse of Navy Federal is that you aren’t able to just walk-​in and join if you are regular civilian. There are some restrictions, but instead of me typing them all out you here is the link
so you can understand what I mean. But even with that I still like this financial institution.

I have been an NFCU member for more than 20 years and the Ashburn branch is by far my favorite. I recently moved across country and forgot my check book; no problem, free cashier’s checks! I have been in almost every day this past week for one need or another, and Ashburn’s friendly and efficient staff has come through each and every time.
Pros: Great location, awesome staff!
Cons: Entering from the highway the first time is a bit of a challenge but certainly no big deal.

Pros:
— Convenient general location, but difficult shopping center to exit (busy exit road with extremely long light — unless you exit to smith switch station road toward Gloucester).
— Friendly and helpful customer service
— Lines move fairly fast even during peak hours
Cons:
— Not many I have noticed, although it is not my primary bank.
Bottomline:
— I use it for convenience, lessen reliance on one bank, and to preserve the potential for credit union account benefits

I’ve been a member of NFCU since my parents opened up a dependent account for me when I was a kid… For many years I’ve had a NFCU Visa, and my auto loans and mortgage have been with NFCU… I’ve only had one minor issue that I will mention later… Several months ago, I finally closed my Capital One (they have gone way down hill since being Chevy Chase) banking accounts, and opened up multiple banking accounts with NFCU… The process was easy, and I didn’t have any of the issues I read about from the other reviewer… Their website is excellent, and I’m able to monitor all of my accounts, and transfer funds where I need/​want them… It couldn’t be any easier or more straight forward… The employees at the Ashburn branch have always been courteous and helpful, and the branch itself is modern, and easy to get to… They have three drive through lanes, and a walk up ATM… I’ve been very satisfied with NFCU overall, and in Ashburn, and highly recommend them… I would have given them five stars, but I did have that minor issue… I was using the drive through ATM once, and it «locked up» and wouldn’t process my transaction… It did allow me to cancel, and it did return my card… I simply parked and used the walk up ATM, and didn’t have any other issues…

I joined Navy Federal a few months ago. From day one my experience has been sub par. I had attempted to use the website to apply for membership but kept receiving an error so I decided to go in and pick up the paperwork so my wife and I could open a joint account. After filling out the paperwork we went into the nearest branch to open an account. The representative told us that in order for both of us to be «primary members» we would have to open separate accounts, something we had no intention of doing as we don’t need separate checking and savings accounts for each of us. Purely by virtue of the fact that my wife had filled out the paperwork first, she would become a «primary member» and I would be a «joint member.» When I asked what the difference was I was told that if I ever wanted to secure a loan I would have to become a «primary member». Since I don’t need a loan in the near future I decided to forego that option and remain a «joint member» until the need arises.
Having opened the account, we asked the representative to order us some cheques, which she said she would do. She forgot and we never received them.
Also when opening the account I asked the representative if the branch we were in was the most convenient place for me to deposit checks. She informed me that I could deposit them online if I had a scanner. This is extremely helpful as I own and operate my own business so I was ecstatic at the thought. A few days later I logged into the website to make a deposit only to receive an error telling me something was wrong with my account. After a little digging I was able to discover that you can only make deposits online after 90 days of having an account. The representative never mentioned this and as a result I’ve been forced to drive to the branch every time I need to make a deposit.
A few weeks later I went to purchase groceries using my debit card and the PIN I supplied to them when we opened the account. The charge was declined despite the funds being available. The grocery store attendant told me to try running it as credit, which was successful. I attributed this to a fluke or me remembering the PIN incorrectly. When I got home I checked the letter I received in the mail which included my PIN and I had remembered it correctly. I shrugged it off and forgot about it… until the next time I tried to make a purchase and it happened again. Frustrated, I just decided to let it go and deal with it later. That is, until I tried to buy gas. I tried to purchase gas at Costco using my debit card and the charge was declined again. I ended up driving home on a nearly empty tank. I decided to call Navy Federal and tell them there was something wrong with my debit card. The representative on the phone told me that the «red card» that I had received (the one the issue by default) can only ever be run as credit and never run as debit, despite the card saying «Debit» and «Check card» in big white letters right on it. She told me that when I charge something I should always have the option of running it as credit but if it became a problem they also offered a «blue card» which can only ever be run as debit and I could call and get that one instead. I asked her why the card can’t be run either way like most debit cards and she told me «that’s just how our system is set up.» However, she told me they would be receiving a card that can be run both ways in the «near future» but that they hadn’t been given a specific date yet. She indicated that it should be within a month and I should try calling back in a few weeks. So I proceded back to Costco to get gas and run the card as credit only to discover that Costco’s gas pumps don’t give the option to run the card as credit and immediately ask for a PIN number, failing when the correct pin is entered on this card.
To further complicate things, I later successfully made a purchase at the Costco pharmacy by running the card as credit. I then proceeded to the checkout to purchase the rest of my items where the cashier immediately recognized the card and informed me that they only accept debit and my card can only be run as credit. I told her I had just run it as credit at the pharmacy and she informed me that Costco only accepts Visa debit cards run as credit online and at the pharmacy because medication can be a life and death matter. They do, however, accept American Express.
As a result of the debit card that can’t be used as a debit card, I’ve had to use other methods of payment for at least 75% of the purchases I’ve tried to make since opening the account. This has been an incredible inconvenience to me.
All of that said, there are a few advantages to Navy Federal in that they have a great network of ATMs, online deposit (after 90 days), a decent website and a mobile app for checking balances and such. The major advantage is that they are open from 9am until 6pm on week days. Staying open until 6pm is a great help.
