As a local I realize it’s winter at the coast… But most places are open during the week. I certainly don’t want to fight terrorists aka tourists on the weekends. Hubby and I purposely drove into town for custard King burgers… It’s Tuesday and it’s CLOSED! We wanted to see if the Kingburger, so fondly remembered, was offered. The huge drippy fantastic heart attack on a bun… A hubby plywood mill lunch staple! It was bliss… I digress… Not open Tuesday and Wednesday… We sat in the parking lot and ordered Geno’s pizza. Hubby thinks you need to cater to locals, after all, we are here 365 days a year. Terrorists come and are gone. I’m just telling ya…

Amazing custard for the ride back to WA! Must stop! $ 5 for two cups of custard with one topping each, not too bad! Would recommend

This has been on my to-do list for some time now, but there was no way I was going to forget to write this review. It was the 5th of July as my lady and I were headed back from celebrating Independence Day camping on the beach with our dogs when she started to get hangry. To keep a long story short, the Custard King saved my a$$. The service was quality, the food was damn good, there was no line and the lady was more than content for the ride back to Portland. If you are ever in Astoria and want some good quick eats, we don’t think you will regret eating here in the slightest.

Having lived in Astoria my whole life, I have eaten at the classic Custard King many times and always thought it was decent, but not as good as its nemesis, Dairy Maid. It’s now owned by some young blood from Portland and they’ve definitely made some delicious changes. They’ve also simplified the menu, so that you really only have a handful of food options. No more Tillamook hard ice cream or extra sandwiches. Simple burgers, fries or tots, greens, and custard, pretty much. I think the simple menu suits it and it also allows for the food to be made very quickly! I’m talking less than 5min for my cheeseburger, tots and vanilla custard shake. I watched them make it all and they did a great job! The bun was toasted and delish! Special sauce for dipping tots was yummy. Custard shake was simple and good. The one reminder for folks is that the burgers don’t come with pickles. You have to add them on. I didn’t realize this and I can tell you that I missed getting that pickle flavor on my cheeseburger, so I won’t make that mistake again. If your looking for a sloppy Mom & Pop type cheeseburger, I still vote for Dairy Maid, in Warrenton. All us locals seem to agree it’s amazing! But if you’re in Astoria and want something a little less messy, simple, great ingredients that are fresh, and fast service, I’d say give the revamped Custard King a try!

This place is awesome. I had the bacon cheese burger and changed my cheese to ‘Elvis’ cheese. Soo good! I wish I lived closer. But I’m from Seattle. I will return my beloved Custard King! Almost forgot the eggnog shake, sweet potato fries, and spicy fry sauce was great too.

Ice Creamy Goodness! It’s usually a cold rainy affair in Astoria. Don’t let that distract you. Even through the fog you can find the fun! Custard King is unique. Like most places in Astoria, it’s in an old fashioned little building that has seen a lot over the years. Even on a rainy day, an ice cream here will cheer you right up! This is a small walk up place just off the main road, you can’t miss it! They offer a nice selection of ice creams, milkshakes, sundae’s, and all the classics that one assumes any place like this would have. It couldn’t be a better stop if you have kids with you, and just for some extra magic, they’ll hit the button and have the little train go around the ceiling to make it special. These places are becoming a rarity, make sure to not take it for granted. For such a small place, they do have a pretty large menu, and do their best to offer a good fast food selection of hamburgers, fries, fish, etc. Not my favorite, and not much of a veggie friendly option, so I tend to eat elsewhere. It’s greasy, and a bit of a mess when there’s not much chance to eat outside, to be aware. Overall, just a fun stop and a welcome place when traveling through, or staying the night and needing a place to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Meh. Their«custard» just isn’t custard. If you’ve had real custard, you know what I mean. What they serve is essentially soft serve ice cream. And I was disappointed by how few toppings they offer — not even hot fudge. I’m happy to see that this place has been reinvigorated and is in new hands, but I hope they introduce a bit more pizzaz to their offerings. Plus a trip to the midwest to experience true custard also would help.

We just had the cheeseburgers so can’t review other options. The burgers were top notch! They tasted like old fashioned burgers good high quality ingredients. They aren’t cheap $ 6.50. But they are way better then the average fast food. The place was friendly and very clean. I will go back when I get a craving.

Two more great experiences: When we can in right around closing time, Erin was very accommodating, friendly and quick to fulfill our order. When we called it an order on labor day, again quick and friendly service. Also, beat vegetarian burger ever. Seriously.

My car drives itself to this place while driving through Astoria. You can get burgers, fries and such but the custard is where it’s at. Got there and people were in line waiting to order. We got custard in a bowl with strawberry topping. Very delicious and very refreshing. I can only review the service and custard which gets a 4 of 5.

Very good burger — and the shake tasted like the home-made ice cream we used to make when I was a kid. Sweet potato fries were good — but could have skipped the fry sauce.

Just had time today to try a couple items made with organic frozen custard: chocolate custard on a cone, and a root beer freeze. Great stuff! Note that the place was re-launched earlier this year. Next time we’ll stop at mealtime and have a burger.

Its probably tradition that keeps us coming back, but every year we make a stop at the Custard King on our way home from Cannon Beach. Id recommend a custard cone or sundae. Keep it simple. I had a hamburger, it was fine, not something Id order again. I also had a milkshake. It too was fine. but I wouldn’t recommend it. I do like their sweet potato fries and their spicy fry sauce. Im happiest when I just get a custard sundae, sweet pot fries and fry sauce.

My girlfriend and I stopped by Custard King a couple weekends back on our way to Portland. And let me just say, the new and IMPROVED Custard King. It was a Sunday if I remember right and a steady line had formed. They’ve got a new crew still learning the ropes so it took a minute or two to place our order. Super nice people, and the burgers are ridiculously good! 2 Royale’s with cheese. It’s an old school take with modern skill. We ate them too fast. BUT, we still had to try the custard. We both got a vanilla cone. SOGOOD! kinda small but a decent price point and well worth it. It’s soft serve and delicious. Seriously, if you’re driving thru Astoria, DOYOURSELF A FAVOR, make a quick stop off at CK. I’m still thinking about it. Wish there was one in Portland. Could be the best burgers in Oregon.

Hamburger: FANTASTIC Chocolate Shake: To die for Sweet potato fries: BEST I’ve ever had. Customer service? It was great! They even filled the half gallon cooler with water for the dogs twice. Definitely on my have-to list when I come to Astoria from now on!

I visited the new Custard King this weekend on my weekend trip to Astoria — WOW!!! Why don’t we have these in Portland? I had a cheeseburger(made with Tillamook cheese /both the meat and the buns were locally sourced) and sweet potato fries with fry sauce(super delicious!) But it’s the CUSTARD I’m now obsessed with! Mine came in the form of a milkshake. It was out-of-this-world good. Gimme more please.

Stopped by the Custard King a few weeks ago on our way through Astoria to the coast — so happy this place landed in good and caring hands! All cleaned up and looking good, friendly and knowledgeable service. Had a yummy milkshake made with Tillamook ice cream and my friend is *still* raving about the french fries. Happy to see expanded menu with some healthy options(even if I won’t order them ;) My only«complaint» is that lil floppy-eared dog was nowhere to be found — ah well, just means I’ll have to roadtrip back again very soon! Long live the Custard King!

New ownership. Burger was not seasoned. And my order was not correct. I’ll give them another try. If they would just season the burger patty while cooking it the flavor would be greatly improved. They spent a lot of time painting the building but the sign is pretty pathetic. It needs to be restored.
