This was not a good place to stay I travel for a living and this is a hotel I will never revisit. First two rooms had not been cleaned and the last room had to get new room key because the first set did not work. Not a very clean place.

I would rate Howard Johnson Express Athens 0 Stars if I could. While you all know that you pay for what you get, I realize that $ 100/night shouldn’t leave me with a $ 30/night experience. The building was a California/Florida style hotel from the 60’s with two floors. Three buildings formed a U-shape with a common courtyard that faces the scenic highway… No big deal. It could still be nice inside, so I thought. Walking up the stairs to the second level, I go to use my card to key in, only to see that the door is propped open with an old piece of rolled up carpeting. The floor had garbage outside most of the rooms and it remained that way all weekend. Our room was in the middle of the floor, Room 130 to be exact. There were two questionable guys lingering outside our door talking. One was sitting in a desk chair outside the room directly across the way. Apparently these are hotel employees. They dressed like regular guys, jeans, hoodie and hat. No indication that they worked for the hotel otherwise. The door to «their» room remained open all weekend and there was a person sitting in that chair 24 – 7. Very bizarre if you ask me. The room inside was bland; Shades were like big draperies; which didn’t match any of the décor, bedding, carpet or paint on the walls. Mini-fridge was nice but couldn’t keep anything cool at the lowest setting. The iron and ironing board mounted directly on the wall were attractive. The only things that were nice about the room were the mounted light fixtures and the cleanliness of the bathroom. It’s like they wanted to try about 5% and then said, who gives a crap. I have paid half the price of this hotel at other locations for 3 – 4 star quality that surpasses this hole in the wall dive. I remember staying at many Howard Johnson’s over the years and they were all good experiences. This location does not deserve to carry the HoJo name or be associated with Wyndham Hotels.

One of the worst experiences I have ever had at a hotel. Walls were paper thin. You could hear clear conversations from other rooms without trying. TVs blaring. The bed was fine, bathroom was ok… but the walls… razor thin. What a nightmare.

Stayed here Saturday night on a beer drinking trip to Athens. made the reservation online at easily and picked this location due to ease of access to our list of places to go. It’s a pretty old hotel, obviously been here for a number of years, but they’ve updated it well enough to not make it feel too grungy. The fridge and microwave in the room were ancient relics but worked fine, the climate control was newer with a digital display and did the job to keep us comfortable. Bed was clean, bathroom was fine, though one if the shelves was about to fall off the wall and the paintwork inside, awful. Someone needs to buy masking tape next time. we had their breakfast Sunday morning which was pitiful, frozen waffles, sausage biscuits in wrappers, and cereal in plastic bowls, but it was at least free and filling enough for a bit. The other downside was the area to eat was tiny and very crowded, but oh well, for $ 69 out the door I can’t complain.
