Authentic surf brands. Nice selection on hats clothes shoes swim suits etc. The prices are high and my 3yo daughter fell face first into the floor after tripping over a seam in the floor. It appears they added on to store or replaced part of floor and the floors are not even. Seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen. Luckily my kid was embarassed but ok. There are a lot of younger employees who won’t even make eye contact with you let alone greet you or ask if you need assistance. Overall quality merchandise but lacking customer service.

If you’re into a store thats staffed by kids who would prefer you leave, then Berts is your shop. They do have cool stuff, and better quality items than other cheap beach supply stores. However in the many locations of Bert’s I’ve been to, the staff is always more concerned with themselves than anything else. I spent a couple hundred bucks there yesterday in Atlantic Beach, and as always I seemed to bother the cash register clerk by interrupting story time with his co-workers when i had to ask to pay them for my son’s stuff. Next we went down the street to Atlantic Beach surf shop, and I immediately felt a sense of regret that I had spent anything at Berts. Same way in Wilmington too. If you like staff who are sitting in chairs with their heads on the sales counter, minimal selection of the brands they cary, and feeling like a bother when you shop, then Bert’s is your shop.

As has been already mentioned, this is not your typical souvenir shop that you can find up and down the Carolina coasts. Those have products that are lucky to last the length of your vacation — but you will pay for them like they are made(or spun) from gold. Not being a surfer — unless you count channel surfing — I cannot actually vouch for the product that you can find here, but I will say that you find a distinctly different crowd. Probably because while the shop is located on the main road(there is really only one), it is not just across the causeway and you really have to be determined to get there. Even the parking lot is not all that friendly like some of those other places. That said, if you are looking for a trinket, this is probably not the place to stop. While they do have some shirts and such, this is definitely more for shoes, suits and even boards and wetsuits. I did not see a single hermit crab in the place. Those who are interested in one with the helmet of your favorite NFL team perched atop may want to look elsewhere.

Looked like a page out of Tamarindo. Great local spot to pick up any of your non-touristy beach needs(for that, just go next door to Wings). They have all the brands you’d expect to find in a surf shop, and we stumbled upon a few decent sales. Minus one star for size selection; we were a little bummed to find racks and racks of XL tops, sweatshirts, etc, but that may have just been due to our end-of-the-season visit.

You would think that Bert’s Surf Shop would be a local version of Wings, which can be found just about any beach on the East Coast. However, Bert’s goes one step further than Wings by carrying quality products such as swimsuits, both standard and high quality. It was nice to see a «shop and compare» store in regards to swimwear, eyewear, and beach products. If you’re a surfing freak, this store is for you.
