A friend and I shared a fish and chips from this place during a «food truck crawl» Saturday evening. The chips were thick cut planks that looked really good but lacked the crisp on the outside that we were hoping for(perhaps they weren’t double fried?). Still, a little ketchup made them a decent side, The fish was served as a tube shaped portion, but the crust didn’t cling well and the fish portion seemed a little skimpy compared to the amount of batter. The taste and texture were good, though, and a splash of malt vinegar made for a good snack. Bottom line: Maybe they weren’t on their game tonight; I’m not sure. This dish was decent but not a knockout.

Nothing better than fish and chips from a double-decker bus!

I’ve been a fan of the diversity in food truck options available at the small park on 6th and Waller, which varies from fried chicken wrapped in a waffle to Philly cheese steaks and Asian cuisine. So, the second stop on my trailer food crawl was«5th and Chips», the English themed truck, or should I say bus since it’s a dated British double decker bus turned into a food establishment. The woman at the window insisted that we try their daily special, a fried fish taco(wait, a British taco?!) with homemade cabbage slaw and pico de gallo, so that is what we ordered. The fish was crispy on the outside but warm & soft on the inside while the cold cabbage gave it a loud crunch, which felt refreshing in the heat of the day. I love it when textures collide! Looking back on it, I am probably dumb for not actually trying their fish & chips but the quality of the fish in my taco was average at best. Cute little place and very friendly woman working that bus!

What a FUN little place/area they are located. I HIGHLY recommend checking it out. Their fish and chips were great — just the right kind of flavoring. YUM!

Well, since my beloved Bits & Druthers has left me, I found myself looking for a substitute. It was fair. 2 large, heavy chunks of cod in a crisp batter. That had no flavor to it. Not even the smallest hint of salt. Just nothing. Which is odd, because the chips were seasoned to perfection. My search for stellar fish and chips shall continue it seems.

This was my first time here after seeing the place when I got tacos at Veracruz during SXSW. First off, the owners were really chill and friendly. We talked about how they found the bus and how he learned to do legit fish and chips. As for the food, I got the fish and chips, the gf got the battered sausage. The fish and chips were delicious and came out really hot, not too salty and the batter wasn’t too thick at all. The sausage was pretty good too but not my favorite. The chips were were thick cut and great with some vinegar and ketchup. I’ll definitely be coming back to this place for more fish and chips and to try out their crabcake!

Came back here a week later with two friends. Since we had three people this time, we not only got the fish and chips but decided to try the fried pickles as well. The food all came out at the same time and all incredibly hot. The fried pickles consisted of 6 huge pickle spears fried in the same crispy batter as the fish for only $ 3. Between that and the huge amount of fish and chips we got, all three of us walked away happy to the tune of $ 8. Of course, we’re all girls and none of us were starving, but you get the idea. The food is great and you can’t beat that price with any of the other downtown food carts.

I drive down 5th street pretty regularly and recently noticed a new addition. A bright red double decker bus straight out of London. Last night while walking downtown we decided to swing by and check the place out. Fittingly enough they are called 5th and Chips and serve a pretty simple menu of fish tacos and fish and chips. I ordered the fish and chips and they were delicious and made to order. The fish was light and flacky with a good amount of batter and the fries were nice and crisp. It seems right now they are only open at night for the bar crowd but I spoke with the owner and they should be expanding to daylight hours soon. Definitely worth checking out, now they just need to serve some Old Speckled Hen.
