My son was admitted today in good spirits. No one is allowing any phone calls or info to the family. I wish I would have taken him somewhere else first. Anywhere. I have called over ten times… and I can’t get a straight answer. He’s 22 and I think I allowed the biggest mistake ever.

I was here when I was a teenager. I was abused at Austin State Hospital. Charles Fischer a child psychiatrist who used to work here was convicted of child molestation and fired. Most of the kids here are from single parents. Some of them are here for self mutilation. Most teens outgrow self mutilation there’s studies on this. Austin State Hospital is state funded. Medicaid pays for 70% of antipsychotics. These drugs have high noncompliance rates. Another tax waste.

It’s a state hospital… so, not much to say that you wouldn’t already expect. I attended trainings here and found myself not wanting to stay longer than necessary. Back in the hey days of institutionalism, this sprawling facility must’ve looked quite different and most likely was more inviting and pleasing to the eye. This time, the old, run-down merry go round just reminded me of a creepy movie and kept me looking over my shoulder.

Straight out of a horror movie. Don’t let your loved ones go here if you have another alternative. It was hell for me.

Imagine a pet hospital, a dirty old scary pet hospital from the 60’s. Teal tile and all. I had the pleasure of visiting someone here once… don’t ask… it was a horrible scary experience. I hope no one that reads this ever winds up here or has to know someone that needs to go. Avoid it at all costs. :-/ All buildings are connected my underground passageways, the furniture is stuff that good will would just throw away and the staff members are blank and numb from their work there.
