Yeah, this place was strange. Let me preface this by saying that I love dive bars and hole-in-the-wall restaurants. From the time my wife and I walked in, we were put-off by all of the signs mentioned by other reviewers. The manager(or possibly owner) seems a bit assertive based on the aggressiveness of the signs. We very nearly walked out based on that alone. Additionally, the place was not particularly clean. We went ahead and ordered anyway, because when you are hungry, you are hungry. The burger was not good. Frozen patty quality meat. Bun was great though. The«spicy bulgoki»(sic) sandwich was fantastic, however. This sandwich accounts for both stars given to this restaurant. It was really great. However, when we took our burger over to the condiment bar, we were underwhelmed. The tomatoes were not quite ripe and the lettuce was floating in water. Overall, there are too many other restaurants that are more welcoming, producing higher quality food, and have more attention to detail for me to ever make a return visit.

One of the best burger joints in Austin. I definitely recommend. The best burger buns in town, affordable, delicious and generous portions.

It is a good burger but i will never go back to this place EVER again. The owner was horrible to his employees, right in front of customers. He was totally demeaning to the guys working. He provides horrible customer service to the customers to. Never again! I wish there was a option for no stars because I would give it. He needs to learn how to treat his employees that are working for him and providing the customers a pleasant experience. Yelling and demenaing the employees is not acceptable.

Welp, we just found the best burger in Austin. But better than that — the french fries. Absolutely to die for, and had to get more. Best fries we’ve both EVER had — lots of crunch to them. Note that this isn’t a fancy or trendy place. It’s homey, it’s divey, it’s greasy… but it’s just so damned good. It’s exactly what you crave sometimes. Would I bring a first date there? No. Well… maybe I would actually, because I refuse to hang with a girl who doesn’t dig a place like this. Definitely a great place to meet up with the guys at lunch, or bring your SO when you’re craving something real that won’t leave you waiting in line for 20 hours, hunting for parking(parking is easy and a plenty), or broke. This is what Austin should be, but no longer is. We had two different kinds of cheeseburgers at two different sizes(you get to choose from three sizes), and they were cooked on a delicious perfectly-greasy bun. Next time I’m trying bulgogi, but you should start off with the burger or cheeseburger as a first timer. I just remembered to write this review because I was going over my credit card statements. $ 15 for two of us, AFTER tip. I clearly didn’t tip enough, so I’ll be back soon.

From out of town, looked on the phone for nearest restaurants and this popped up. In the mood for a burger, but we got MUCH more. There are 3 different size patties to choose from and you get to choose either fresh made wheat or white buns which are made on site. Condiment bar freshly stocked which makes the hamburger that much more enjoyable when you can pile on your own sides. Onion rings and fries are a healthy portion. Atmosphere is rustic on the inside which adds to the ambience. Definitely glad the iPhone had this place on its radar. If we are back in this neck of the woods, we will be back…

Burger Tex is one of my favorite Austin Burger joints. I go about every other week and deciding what I want is becoming increasingly more difficult as I try new things. The burgers are some of the best, the grilled chicken burger is amazing, the ribeye burger is excellent, and the turkey burger is solid, not to mention the bulgoki(!!). You really can’t go wrong. That being said, the establishment itself is rather meh and the owner is not the nicest guy. But the food is amazing, so whatever.

One star is for the burger, the bun and fries. I have been eating here for as long as I can remember and love the grub. However, there is the Korean guy who is a real a**hole. I could overlook that for a while if you feed me right. Recently I called to see what kind of oil they were using(my son has soy allergies) and as the nice person who answered the phone was answering me I hear the a**hole’s mean voice in the background and the phone hung up. Bad people don’t get my money for long. Additionally, the place smells septic. Probably getting closed by the health department soon. This place is on it’s way to «closed for…». Spend your money at another local joint with good people.

Rude. This was my first time here so I was hungry and excited because I love trying new places. The manager/owner greeted me with«Here.» I walked over smiled and said this was my first time. He looked annoyed as if he could care less. I didnt say anything else. I was on the bus that day and was very hungry so I stayed. Food was mediocre. I will not be dining there again.

This is a darn good burger for the price. I had the XL pattie with Chz and bacon combo for less than $ 9. For the quality of the bun and fries it a well worth it deal. I also like the fixings bar. Always nice to do your own fixins. There are better burgers around here but they will cost you double the price.

The hype that I saw by other Unilocal reviews left me sadly disappointed. Whereas my other Burger Tex experiences have been with the location on the drag owned by Mr. & Mrs. Lee, this location seemed much more like a dive bar with a staff that seemed bored. My wife and I were wanting bulgogi burgers, and since we lived in the area, thought to try out the other Burger Tex location in town instead of wandering over to campus. The menu is much more extensive, and there is a greater amount of staffing at this location. However, I noticed that three of the five guy working were sitting at a table and talking and looking on their phones, not seeming to be doing anything important. I also noticed that the cleanliness of this location left something to be desired. I got the spicy pork bulgogi burger and my wife got the beef bulgogi burger. The quality is comparable to the campus location, but the secret sauce that the campus location has was nowhere to be found here. This location is much larger with much more seating, but lacks the homey feeling of the campus location. I think in the future, we will take the longer drive to go to the location that we enjoy more.

Good– the food! wow, this is the best burger ive had in Austin. Im talking about the bulgogi. Fries and other sides are great. The condiments are on the side too which helps. Most of the time the service counter people are good, except for the mean Korean man who I think is the owner. a «no soup for you» type of guy. Bad– bathrooms need remodeling! Big time! Parking lot needs to be cleaned up!

We used to LOVE this place. I’m not sure what happened, but today we were severely disappointed! My husband and I both got #2 combos and our son got a kids combo. My husband and I both thought the meat tasted really weird and gross. He managed eat about a quarter of his burger, I only got 3 bites. It tasted very metallic to me. Our son took one bite, spit it out, and said it was«yucky» but he did that before either of us got a bite of our burgers. The fries are good, but I got a TINY amount while my husband AND son both got nearly twice as many. The tomatoes were mostly green and hard, the jalapeños were frothy like they were sitting in soap. No joke. They apparently have problems with consistency. The girl who took our order was nice enough but very short with us and she kept rushing us. It was not busy. The room where we sat smelled of mouse urine. Strongly. We totally regret our choice to eat here today. If we get sick I won’t be surprised.

Lots of people love chipped off frozen patties on a flat top. I’m not one of them. I would think a place with Burger in the title would take more pride in their patty. Oh well. Good news: buns are good. Prices are cheap. Service was extremely friendly and fast.

You know that big building on airport where you have to go do annoying stuff sometimes, well we were over there for something less annoying — getting our marriage license and then we were hungry for some lunch. I have always wanted to check out Burger Tex across the street, so we decided to hit it up! It was pretty quiet actually in the place, maybe 2 other tables of people. Steve H and I walked in and made our orders at the counter. We both got the bulgogi burger combos, which is like a Korean flavored hamburger and we got an order of the fried pickles. The restaurant is pretty big on the inside with plenty of seating options. They have a pool table and TV for entertainment. Our order was up and then we took our burgers over to the veggie counter to dress them up a bit. We added all the fixings. As I tasted my burger I was surprised more and more with the flavors of each bite. The burger was awesome! It was juicy and cooked just right! The bun was light and toasted. My fries we golden and with the right amount of crisp and seasoning. The fried pickles were great too! It was a perfect lunch. The employees checked on us multiple times and they were super friendly! Steve H and I were leaving and both looked at each other in surprise and said — well that was an unexpected 5 star experience! I feel like this place is a little underrated and a great option when you are looking for a good burger in the area!

This place has a damn fine burger. Seriously, if you’re looking for a cheeseburger that hits the spot, and some awesome fries to boot, come here. The beef patties are juicy and tasty, and the buns are so light and perfect. And there is a toppings bar so you can have it your way without resorting to some fast food chain with a creepy ass mascot. HOWEVER, if you’re looking for a BULGOGIBURGER, I must warn you, Burger Tex 2, located at 29th and Guadalupe, is owned and operated by Koreans and they have a far superior bulgogi burger. Sorry, but it’s the truth. They’ve got some other burger options here too, which I haven’t tried, but given the success they have with their standard hamburger, I’m going to have to try them.

Went here while in Austin on business, based off of good ‘ol Unilocal reviews. This is a hole-in-the-wall place that probably hasn’t changed in 20 years. Burger was huge and good, fries were amazing. Basically you order what you want and build the burger yourself. Food was excellent, employee was nice and the place is super cheap. Would definitely go back here. I got their biggest burger combo and was out the door for less than $ 7.

What if I told you there was a hidden gem of a burger joint hidden by Leif Johnson Ford? What if I told you it was as cheap as fast food? And if it was run by a super-friendly Korean family? It’s here. And it’s Burger-Tex. The burgers have fresh baked buns like Fuddrucker’s used to back in the 80s as well as a similar self-serve condiment bar. The burgers aren’t quite as thick as the old Fuddrucker’s though — think of the burger as a perfect happy medium between greasy thin cheeseburger and large patty like Fuddrucker’s. It’d be a 5 star except for the average fries and the Pepsi fountain instead of Coke.(I did appreciate the iced tea and fresh lime slices, though.)

First, a little background. This is the original, not a franchise but in the past, some business friends of the owners had a franchise store in Oak Hill. Not only was the food amazing but the people were the nicest you can imagine. The owners and employees all knew my kid’s names and what they ordered and they were all smiles. The food was fantastic and the place was immaculate. If I could have given them 6 stars I would have. But for reasons unknown, they went out of business so we’re left with this place and the one on campus. The burgers at this one are not bad but I’ve been here 5 times as we do business nearby and while they’re still pretty good, twice they’ve been overly salty and once overcooked. In addition, the fries that all of them used to make were unique and awesome and recently they’ve switched to a different fry that’s pretty much the same as many other places and not as good. The lettuce was also brownish today. But if you look at Jebidiah’s review below, that’s not the biggest problem. The people who own these are Korean(not Chinese) but THIS guy is the equivalent of the Soup Nazi. There are all kinds of rules posted all over the store and he charges $ 4 for lettuce and tomatoes from the toppings bar if you split a burger. Say WHAT?!? Last time my wife and I went we were getting an order to go and I told him we would get one drink for both of us, at which time he chimed in immediately«No sharing drinks!» Gee, sir… the order is TOGO. And today, I asked him if they had gone back to the old fries(which were divine) or still had the new fries and he literally just curtly barked at me «new fries!» Uh… okay, skip the fries then. Basically, the guy is just rude and how anyone manages to get away with his attitude is a mystery. I like the food OK — it’s not nearly as good as it was at the Oak Hill location and I don’t think it’s even as good as the campus store. Regardless, I don’t eat a lot of burgers and know I can get a great burger a number of places in Austin. It would have to be downright orgasmic for me to put up with his attitude and give him any more of my money.
