Best bar at the University of Texas. Food surprisingly good and the pool tables are nice. No coasters needed to even out the tables.

Tasty cider. Good beer and wine selection as well. Worth your buck! There is also dart boards and pool tables, a few TVs with sports on. Definitely coming again.

Not too sure where you could get a better bacon burger and fries you could get for $ 6.50. Dive-y but that’s a part of its charm. I only go for lunch so no clue how crazy college-y it gets, but I am sure it gets pretty rowdy.

We decided to try this place due to reading that they have some of the best burgers in Austin… That article was vastly misleading. The beer selection is impressive. Lots of great beers on tap, bottle, and can. That is why I gave them the two stars. The good ends there… We ordered the bacon cheeseburger. The only things I could relate would be a school burger or a sonic kid’s burger. Thin cheap patty, that was rather bland. Bacon was almost all fat, and not cooked all the way. They did not get the orders right for either of our burgers. This honestly looks like they spend as little money on the food, and only focus on the beer. Aside from the less than mediocre food, we could not sit outside due to all the cigarette smokers. What happened to no smoking near doors? That was honestly the worst part — being forced to breath in that poison justvto get in or out.

This place kinda runs itself. The bartenders are quick and get to know you the more you are there. This was a great spot to meet up and throw some darts around. The beer specials were always good and they have gluten free options too. Not much parking in the lot, so think about a backup option if you need it.

The food was not good at all. Cold hamburger and fries. Beer was cheap and good though. Plus they have darts and pool. Just don’t eat here.

Great spot for beers after work and they have specials every day. Last night my friends and I shared a pitched of Real Ale IPA for $ 11! They also have a pretty good burger and fries for real cheap!

Used to frequent this bar about 15 years ago. Stopped by today for a beer and to watch The Open, which was on the TV with the sound on. The manager, joe, I believe turn ed off the sound, so I asked if he could put the sound back on. He said no, so I asked why, and his response was«rules». I inquired why not since I was the only person in the bar, his response was if it was the World Cup he would leave it on, so I once again inquired even though I’m the only person in the bar… he then said he wouldn’t change it because he’s the manager. Knowing that he’s in charge I won’t be coming back. I will say by the time I left there were 3 other customers, all watching the open, including the bartender. As an update, as I was finishing my beer and getting ready to leave, he said he was tired of the music and out the sound back on the tv. Then he came over to me to let me know that the sound was back on, but if another customer came back in he’d have to turn it off. I mentioned that he should have just left it on earlier when I requested as much… he said he was training a new bartender and he can’t just break the rules. I mentioned that making customers happy should be the rules and he said there was nothing he could do and walked away. He then asked the only other person in the bar that had walked in if he minded the sound being on… he said not at all. I paid cash and left… not to return.

Hands down one of the best burgers in Austin. I am never in this area of town but rarely I will think, «I just need a good burger.» And I come here! Beer specials everyday ensure a cheap and cold beverage to accompany your burger. May I recommend the bacon cheeseburger with sliced mushrooms and a side of ranch? It is the bomb digs.

After a long day of running around with some friends, we decided on the Crown and Anchor due an event at our original meeting location. Since I’m not from Austin and I only had a snackbar and coke zero for lunch 5 hours earlier, I wasn’t in the mood to be picky. Like most restaurants in Austin, this place looks like a run down shack. That must be the key — they spend nothing on décor(either inside or outside) and have the money to spend on yummy food? Because this place was good. Now I was starving at this point so maybe my perception is skewed? Maybe, but I got the mushroom swiss burger and I have to say it hit the high points. Real swiss, sauteed mushrooms, soft bun that had a wonderful crunch from being toasted, and a heaping pile of pickles and lettuce! Nom, nom, nom! The only negative would be the limited seating inside(where it is nonsmoking) is VERY limited. There are a few longer tables, a couple of small booths, a small bar, and then pool tables. The pool tables seem to take up about half of the dining area. Outdoor seating was pretty good since we were a large group and we were able to put enough tables together for most of the group, but you risk sitting near smokers. This is definitely a place I’d return to if I were in the area.

I’ve been coming to this place since i was in diapers. My mom used to meet her friend here and bring me along. as i got older i’d play pinball and pool. When i grew up and moved back to the area, this was one of my first stops. Still one of the best burger and fry baskets for the money, and you can’t argue with that beer selection. the bar is laid back, music isn’t too loud, DOGFRIENDLY is a huge plus for me. i recently went vegetarian so yesterday i tried their veggie burger… best one i have had anywhere so far. All the people that work here are laid back, friendly, and helpful. If you like a loud party scene, this is not for you, go to sixth street. if you like a laid back, friendly, local spot to have a drink and some conversation, this is your place. Been coming here since i was a kid, and if i still live in the area ill be bringing my own when i have them.

Crown will forever be associated with my time at UT. It’s a campus bar but it’s frequented by law students and engineer graduate students so think a(slightly) more mature breed of campus bar. The owner is incredibly nice and the place offers up a lot of charm. It’s busy all nights of the week and if you have a large party you’ll want to stake out a table early. They have a rotating happy hour that includes at least one beer every day that I really love. The menu is pretty typical pub fare and generally nothing specially except for the bacon cheese burger which exceeds all expectations. Strips of crisp, fried to order bacon on top of beef that actually tastes good. I’ve come to Crown just to grab lunch which is a pretty solid endorsement for a dive bar.

Went here for happy hour after a doctor’s appointment with my husband. We were lucky enough to grab a table because quickly after we sat down, the bar got pretty busy. What you should expect: 1. Seat yourself(and arrive early because this place has a great happy hour and is full of large groups of college students from the nearby campus) 2. Order drinks and food at the bar(a line seemed to form on the corner of the bar so you don’t have to squeeze your way in between people sitting at the bar to order) 3. They have a TON of local and craft beers to choose from(with most of the local ones being part of the happy hour $ 3 pint, $ 11 pitcher special) 4. The veggie burger was EXCELLENT! Truly one of the best I have ever had and I have definitely tried my fair share. Wasn’t even all that messy which is a feat in itself. 5. This place definitely has a grungy, dive bar feel — which I personally loved BUT this may not be the place to come with someone who doesn’t love dive bars… but really, do those people actually exist? Anyway, cheap and tasty food and beer in a pretty laid back setting. I would definitely recommend checking it out. (Side note: They also have pool tables, dart boards and a nice amount of outdoor seating)

There are few places in Austin where I feel like the servers are like family. This might be a bad sign that one of these places is a pub. This amazing charming place is a watering hole for us graduate students. Happy hour pitchers are reasonably priced and change every month, and are different for each day of the week. The beer selection is great, could be slightly better though. The veggie burger is very tasty. Share the French fries and dont be a hog. The anchor at the entrance is heavy, don’t lift it unless you are slightly inebriated.

I absolutely love Crown and Anchor! It’s a campus bar, but it sure doesn’t act like it. The drinks are plentiful, the food is great, and the specials are outstanding. If you’re a Texas beer fan(why wouldn’t you be?!), Mondays are your days to go. TX drafts and pitchers are on special. Pair that with a burger and fries and you’re going to be glad you went. If you’re looking for a list of there specials on other days, check out there website. The patio provides plenty of seating for those nice days(anything below 95 and above 45, right Austin?). If the weather is less than desirable, the inside is cozy with your basic tables. If you enjoy your bar games, there are a 2 pool tables and 2 dart boards. You can’t beat this place if you’re looking for a relaxing night out with friends.

Always a good place to grab a beer with friends. Although I have a certain nostalgia for this place, it’s not admittedly the best bar food in the world. Although most people don’t come for the food anyway, they could step their menu up a notch or two to accompany their excellent beer selection. I give this place a fair shake as, first and foremost, a bar and that’s what it’s good at!

Let’s start with a meta-discussion: four stars, for me, means that, given the appropriate opportunity, I’ll likely come back. Two stars indicates exactly the inverse: barring something unusual, I won’t return. Three stars is a wild card, because it can mean, again, by personal definition, several different things. There’s the«bad kind» of three stars, by which a place establishes higher expectations than normal(usually be being more expensive) and than fails to thoroughly meet them. I probably won’t do that twice. Crown and Anchor, though, is the other kind, the«good kind» of three stars, by which a place sets the expectations very low(say, as low as a divey patio bar on the outskirts of UT Austin) and then meets them with aplomb. These are places that I sometimes visit quite often. The menu is unspectacular sandwich+quasi-Tex-Mex pub-grub, but nevertheless eclectic enough to have several veggie options(besides fries, of course), and they’ll let you specialize your order within reason. It generally comes out crisp and piping hot. Sometimes it comes out with extra tomatoes when you asked for none, but they’ll fix whatever they break without complaint. Veggie dogs and fries are a fine way to pregame for the heavy drinking ahead. And you should drink heavily at C&A, because they’ve got one of the nicer selections of craft brews in the north campus/Hyde Park area, with a three hour(4 – 7) daily happy hour and an all-day set of discount beers seven days a week. There’s both a small dining room with darts and pool, a covered patio with benches, and some tables in the sun for the brave. It tends to be older students(seniors and grads) as well as some locals, so the fear of belligerent frat boys need scare no one off. Bonus: dog friendly. In short, C&A is a loveable dive, in which the sun and the beer and the conversation, and not the strict adherence to health and building codes, provide the charm. I’ll see you there around five.

I always forget about this place… and I really wish I wouldn’t! Hands down, one of the best burgers in the city. Always perfectly cooked on a nice yeast bun. The burgers here are no frills. No truffled this and that and other crap. Simple and well cooked. Food prices are extremely affordable and the time from order to delivery is always lightening fast, regardless of how busy the place is. The beer selection is solid, offering a number of bottles, rotating taps, and old faithfuls. The crowd is a good mix of undergrad, grad, and older patrons. There is an overwhelming sense of calm and community here. More than once, people have been happy to share tables and engage in light hearted conversation. There is a good size patio, partially covered and dog welcoming. It’s counter service to make things easier and the bartenders are friendly and attentive. My only complaint is the lack of parking. Expect to park away a little and just walk in, but in the big scheme of things… walking a few blocks after slugging down one of their delicious burgers is a very small price to pay.

— How lucky could a man be?
