By far, the best bar I’ve ever been to in austin. And now it’s closed. Farewell, my dear friend.

Fox Tavern opened a little over a month ago and is relying on word of mouth versus mass advertisement. I heard about the place from Chef Jacob of Mulberry and Haddington’s at a foodie event. He mentioned it was a late night bar with small bites and music. Fox Tavern is connected to Haddington’s and is open from 10pm-2am Wednesday through Saturday. It is dark with a speakeasy ambiance. The night I went the music pumping from the DJ was loud which lends to a cool late night vibe but may not be a good place to have a quiet conversation. The cocktail menu is a mix of classic, contemporary and signature drinks. The 4 beer on draft are some of Texas’ finest breweries: Independence, 512, Real Ale and Thirsty Goat. They also have a decent selection of bottle and can beer. The wine list although not long has some great wines. Most wine lovers would find something they would like. I tasted the Lion’s Tail and the New York Sour. The Lions Tail simply tasted like Christmas! This bourbon cocktail had lime, Allspice Dram, simple syrup and bitters. This was my first time tasting Allspice Dram. The spicy and sweetness of the liqueur compliments the bourbon and the lime adds a hint of tart. I am not a huge fan of bourbon but this drink has me rethinking that. Needless to say I loved the Lion’s Tail drink. The New York Sour is a rye based drink with lemon, simple syrup and a red wine float. The sour gave it a tartness while the red wine gave it a dry finish. From the small bites we ordered the deviled eggs and cheddar crostini. The deviled eggs had a unique herb flavor. The cheddar was rich and absolutely delicious! I like that they have a well rounded drink menu with a good selection for those who fancy cocktails, beer and wine alike. The menu is well thought out and it is a great place for a late night stop. Easily one of the best places to have a cocktail on West 6th.

This tavern is located in the back of Haddingtons(same building). It’s small, but cozy. I like a good specialty cocktail when I can find one. Like Haddingtons, their specialty cocktails are delish! I had a Moscow Mule and a gin and tonic. The gin and tonic is definitely different than I expected, but it was great. They make their tonic in-house. I like the side room that has booths and tables. It’s private and a good place to rest your heels(if you’re wearing 6″ stilettos like I was). Overall it’s a cute and cozy tavern. Stop in sometime if you’re on West 6th.
