Gracie Barra South Austin

I initially joined Gracie Barra South Austin to get into better shape and it didn’t take long before I was hooked and wanted to learn all about BJJ. This is a fun way to improve yourself and meet interesting folks. Professor Dande is one of the nicest and most knowledgeable people I’ve ever met. He makes safety and proper technique a top priority. Gracie Barra South offers kids, beginner, advanced, and black belt programs.
I encourage any and everyone who is considering martial arts to come get your roll on with a free introductory class.

I was in Austin for a few days for work and wanted to find a place to train BJJ away from home. I turned up a few minutes before class, and the instructors welcomed me, handed me a gi, and made me feel at home. The instruction itself was great, as were the facilities and other students. I second Professor Dande being amazingly kind and humble. If I lived in Austin this would definitely be my home gym.

I have been in martial arts for most of my life. My family even owns a Tae Kwon Do school. In all of my nearly 20 years involved in martial arts, both as a student and from a business standpoint, I have never been to a school this good.
The instructor, Professor Dande (pronounced «Dun-​jee»), is the kindest, most humblest instructor I have ever met. Not only is he certified BAMF (I believe he’s ranked #4 in the world at his weight), but he gives great, clear instruction, along with practical examples. He seems to honestly care for his students.
I have only been here for 6 weeks (it’s weird to be a complete beginner again after doing martial arts my whole life), but I’m completely hooked. Come roll with us!

My wife and I traveled to Austin from Houston this last weekend to see some friends. Part of my preparation was to find a gym where I could train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu while I was away from my home gym. I e-​mail Nalei at Gracie Barra South Austin and got a very prompt response with a lot of information on the location and what I would need to bring with me. She was EXTREMELY helpful.
The evening shows up for me to try out the gym so I show up a little early. Nalei meets me at the front, gives me everything I need, and sends me to get changed out before the class.
The class structure was fantastic and easy-​to-​follow and the gym was filled with knowledgable and friendly people. It was also nice to have a lot of people of a similar level of skill to me own to practice with.
Honestly, if I lived in Austin I would have signed up and made this my home gym. HIGHLY recommended.

Having just moved here from Southern California (where there was a martial arts school on every corner), I was a little surprised at how few Jiu Jitsu schools are in south Austin. However, my son has been training here since October and we couldn’t be happier. We looked at several schools locally and are so pleased with our decision. Everyone from the staff, teachers, students and parents are super nice. The teachers are very encouraging while continuing to instilling discipline. The instructors are very well trained and knowledgable. There are several black belts from Brazil instructing classes and sharing years of knowledge.

Started training here in January and I love it. Top notch instruction, friendly people, and clean. It is family friendly while also providing very hardcore training if you want to start training harder. It has the power to change your life if you let it.

I didn’t know exactly what to expect my first day. I was welcomed by the instructors and the students, and I have been attending classes for a few months now. I love it! I’ve lost weight and feel great about myself. I also started my 3yr old and he has tons of fun. If you’re looking for a unique fitness experience and want to gain an invaluable skill, this school is perfect for you.
