The Fit Pit

I wanted to start training for boxing with the goal of sparring, and maybe one day competing. Having little experience, I’ve found the classes included in your $ 45/​mo to be really helpful. I wanted a real boxing gym, and I’ve been very pleased with how no-​nonsense The Fit Pit is.
If you buy 4 lessons, you get 2 for free, and it works out to like $ 23/​private lesson, which is incredible. Couple 1 training per week with the free classes, and you have yourself a solid workout regimen. Even if fitness is your goal, you have support from the trainers and other students.

I trained here for the 2014 Golden Gloves (165lb Novice division). Coach Cardenas is Great. Private lessons are a must if you want to improve, but they are very reasonably priced. And, after having successfully won the two fights I had under his tutelage (which at the age of 37 were my last), I can say that I improved because he was able to tell what my weaknesses and strengths were — and how to improve upon and maximize them. In general, the vibe at the gym is cool. I felt like people were friendly, and there are a lot of potential sparring partners there for those looking to compete. Alfred and Mo cornered me for my fights, and couldnt ‘have been better.

There are a lot of people who are not training to compete, but coming in for the fun workout. They seem to enjoy themselves as well. Personally, I really like focusing on developing my skill on each bag (heavy, speed, double end) versus counting reps. I would definitely recommend Fit Pit to anyone who wants an interesting and challenging way to get in great total body shape — or someone in Austin who would consider competing in amateur boxing.

So I sped down to this place this morning, all excited to try something new — esp. given the rave reviews this place has gotten. The website and the board both list a Combat Fit class at 10 am. I show up about 5 minutes to and no one knows anything. The owner came in about 10 minutes after 10 so I asked him, «Is there a class today?» He says, «I don’t think so.» Well, gee. You’re the owner. Seems to me if anyone would know it would be you. Then he tells me he knows one of the guys won’t be there b/​c of an emergency, the other usually shows up about 10:30. This is what a website is for, to let people know about these types of issues. What a huge waste of time.

I hesitate writing a review of this place because an influx of «fitness freaks» would ruin it. I’m grateful that this is a hard hitting, tough workout that has no room for posing and primping. Coach Art is very good at pushing you right over your limit and making you feel the good pain.

A+ boxing gym! I was visiting Austin on business for 3 days and have an amateur fight in 3 weeks. Art got me in on short notice for 2 full one-​hour workouts.

Can’t rave about this place more! What are you looking for? If you want to know technique and be in a gym where you really learn — this is the place for you. If you are like me, interested in learning the right way, having a great time and a killer workout — then you too will love this place.
The reviews about Coach Art are right on. You can tell from the moment you walk into the gym that it’s a special place. He loves the sport of boxing and the people are focused on their workouts. His son works there too, and for me, there is something special about family businesses.
I’ve had 2 classes so far and I’m looking forward to trying the Wednesday night/​Saturday am Combat class. I can’t wait until I can get through a 2 minute speed rope round, hitting the speed bag on at least one return versus letting it bounce back and forth between hits and remembering which punch is which without having to say the number outloud :-)… and that darn side step… I’ll get that down soon enough :-)

I wanted a nearby gym I could go to with bags and training partners. So I decided to check out The Fit Pit.
Coach Art is a great guy who you can tell loves the sport of Boxing. I signed up for some Private Boxing Lessons with him as well because they were only $ 30 a lesson. Not only were they VERY affordable already, but then he gave me a free intro lesson and added 2 more lessons for free because I bought 4. That’s 7 Boxing lessons for $ 120! Very happy about that.
On top of that I asked him how much it was to join the gym (which is open almost all the time, btw) and he said that as long as I was doing Private Boxing Lessons then the gym was free.
So overall the gym was a great investment.

Great gym, Art is an amazing coach. Try it once you will be addicted.

This is a great gym. I have never boxed before, but was looking to change up my normal workout routine and Coach Art helped me to do just that. He did not make me feel silly or too girly to be there. He asked me what my goals were, assessed my fitness, and created a plan to suit me. Coach Art is the bomb. I’ll definitely be back!

I recently married and moved to South Austin. My son (8yrs old) was in Kung Fu in Round Rock but wasn’t impressed with his selection in South Austin.
So…(I’m getting to the point now)
My husband signed them up for boxing at the Fit Pit. My son, given the choice of ANY after school activity, chose the Fit Pit. He loves boxing. He comes home tired, hungry, and ready for more.
My husband also loves it there. He is a personal trainer, hand-​to-​hand combat instructor, etc… but has learned a lot about boxing and has also been loving it. He said beating on things makes me feel good.
I plan on starting when it’s cooler in the evenings… yes, like now. Thank you Fit Pit for keeping it local, keeping it real, and encouraging my son to do his best.
