I just ate here a few days ago and I have to say it the most homey down in austin feeling to eat here. I’ve lived in Austin all my life and a lot has changed, there are a lot more artificial places that are just for hype but green mesquite is great. The food could be over cooked some days or not seasoned but they have signs saying they aren’t the best, poor service poor food but at least there’s beer ect. It’s a very Texan place for people who don’t care, true austinites that have lived here for a long time and go to places like this that remember the real old austin.

Solid fried okra and other sides. The meats are tender, but don’t stand out on flavor. The flies buzzing around were too much, though. Lots of flies.

One of the unsung heroes of Texas food is BBQ chicken. Green Mesquite is one of the juiciest places in Austin! The ham also great. Also try Scholz Garten, same owners. Real Austin place.

I’ve been eating at the Green Mesquite for 10 years. I did come every month for a long time, when I would have a monthly meeting in the area. I always get the smoked turkey sandwich. Yum! So delicious! It’s good they also have good cold beer on tap too! Fireman 4, Blue Moon … a couple of my favorites. Great service and friendly laid back environment. Great place to eat!

I would recommend going just about anywhere else for barbecue other than this place. I went in for some simple bbq chicken breast. Two of them cost me $ 8. I thought that was a pretty good deal, until I got home. They were incredibly small for chicken breasts. On top of that, they tasted had a bland taste and a rubbery texture. This isn’t my top choice for barbecue in Austin.

This place was okay. But everything about it seemed very average. There is just better options for bbq.

Ordered the brisket, okra, Mac and cheese and chilli cheese fries. Brisket and fried okra was just ok and the mac and cheese and cheese fries were poor. All in all, this place is a one and done for me.

Had the brisket, ribs, and sausage meat plate with beans and potato salad. The brisket was excellent and fell apart as you ate it. The sausage was very good also. The ribs and beans were average for Texas. The potato salad was really good and fresh. Ended with peach cobbler with ice cream and it was by far the best peach cobbler I ever had. It was so light and fluffy.

Great BBQ and friendly staff. I am eager to taste all they have to offer but I selected pulled pork, fried okra and a jambalaya Texas style. I happen to like spicy food so I am excited.

Today I had a 4 meat plate from the Barton Springs location: brisket, chicken, ribs, and ham with green beans and a corn on the cob. All of that and chili cheese fries, plenty of food for two people to share ans under $ 25. I’ll be back for more! All of the meat was so perfect, and their barbecue sauce is just how I like it, tangy and not sweet.

First time for us to visit and we did so because of the advertising from DDD(Diners, Drive-ins,&Dives on the Food Network). The restaurant was clean and the atmosphere was very relaxed, also the staff very friendly and attentive. The pork ribs were very tender, turkey was awesome and the brisket average. The coleslaw was perfect! The hot wings were also great, even better than the ribs in my opinion. The BBQ sauce was very tasty, on the sweet side! We would eat there again

I love this place. Been here twice and the first time around the smoked wings were to die for! This time I got a half rack of baby backs and other than the amazingly fast service, it was delicious!

I’m not being dramatic here, and I really don’t want to come off as rude, but Green Mesquite had the worst BBQ in Austin without a doubt. It’s not even worth dissecting the many things meats we tried, because they were all flavorless and gross. There are so many awesome BBQ places in Austin, so do yourself a favor and avoid. Even the fried okra was boring. I wish I could say«yuck» in multiple languages

Unfortunately, I totally agree with other negative comments. Dry, reheated, flavorless, poor quality meat. End of story. How can yall give this place 5 stars??? It tastes like that one meal everyone looks forward to in a public school cafeteria, jail, hospital, etc. I guarantee if any one of you followed an online brisket or ribs recipe step by step your food would turn out 100% tastier than Green Mesquite. Go see about Brown’s BBQ. The server, an older wolverine looking dude was very sweet, however.

I will preface with the fact that I only did takeout, so I can’t speak much on the service or atmosphere. Anyways, I was in Austin for work so I decided to explore the area around the Colorado River in Austin. After running around the park, I decided to pull into this place to pickup some BBQ to take back to my room. I walked in and the place was small but nice and clean looking. I walked in and was greeted nicely right away. I ordered the special of the day which was two meats, so I picked chicken and pork ribs. It came with two sides, which I picked green beans and fried okra. I only waited about ten minutes or so for my food. No complaint with my service. On to the food. My ribs were just okay as far as the meat. They weren’t bad, but it just wasn’t that fall off the bone you come to expect in Texas. The chicken was well done, but at the same time it was nothing to call home to mama for. The saving grace was the sauce. It was very tasty and up to par with what I would expect out of this region. The sides were alright. The green beans were just okay, but fresh so that is a plus. The fried okra was just that, fried okra and nothing more. Overall, I would say this is a decent place if you just want to stop somewhere and grab a bite when in the Barton Springs area. You won’t be be disgusted or feel like you bought crap. However, if you are looking for some famed Texas BBQ, there are much better places in Austin you could go to.

Two stars cause my wife liked her chicken and my two kids liked the wings. I had the brisket(cold and bland) Mac and cheese, cold and bland. Pork ribs. So so. Service was poor. Not rude. Just poor. I couldnt see the guy to ask for napkins or jalapeños or to tell him the food was cold. We ate and left. Never again.

Fast and friendly service. Probably the most moist turkey I’ve ever had. The ribs and brisket were tender and moist as well. My plate was wiped clean when I was done.

I found this place from DDD guide. I was greeted by a man behind the counter who told me to sit anywhere. My waiter seemed to be really connected to this place because he referred to everything as «my», I asked if he was the owner he said so but he really loves this place. I ordered the 2 meat plate w/2 sides, with brisket, ribs, potato salad, green beans. The brisket was VERY tendor, they ribs were good too. The bbq sauce was a little sweet but wasn’t bad. The potato salad and green beans were ok nothing fantastic, just ok. The peach cobbler was really really good! The consistency of whatever dough they used was moist and kind of cake like. It wasn’t overly sweet but just right and the vanilla bean ice cream complimented it well. All in all a very good experience.

A-OK is right. Came here on a Friday night with a friend and decided to split a plate and some appetizers. We got the chicken and sausage plate, pretty standard BBQ. The fried okra was good, definitely recommended. Great service and a nice patio space for starting a Friday night off right.

None of the sandwiches come with any sides, which is a little annoying and unusual. The Smoked Turkey Sandwich is pretty good. The turkey was a little dry, but it comes with lots of yummy toppings that add a lot of flavor. I also got a side of fries and mac and cheese. The fries were good and the ranch was excellent. The mac and cheese was pretty bad unfortunately. It was so flavorless, it just tasted like watery noodles. Catfish Po Boy was hit though — it was a huge portion and came with lots of toppings, including tartar sauce. My husband really enjoyed it and luckily he didn’t waste any money on sides.

Better than I remember and better than some rated better. It’s been a while since coming here even though it’s close by. We used to bring the dog and eat on the back patio. The grackles were a big turn off and it is a bit rustic. Craving BBQ today and not happy with some recents choices I decided to get Green Mesquite to go. On the phone I spoke with a real person who seemed to care about what she was doing. I got a little bit of everything. Fatty brisket pretty much just right. Not too fatty, not mushy, well trimmed with a crust and not too salty. Everything fell in line. The spare ribs had me hooked and I couldn’t stop. The sausage was well balanced in seasoning, course grind with a snap. The turkey was well done but a bit dry. Well turkey is supposed to be dry. If it’s not then it’s got the chemicals in it. Do you want that! The wings are good but we’re sauced. Next time nix the sauce. Cole slaw was chunky and on target. All in all I will be back sooner and more frequent. For me it beats out some of the more well known places and I don’t have to navigate the gas pumps to get to the meat!

My personal favorite Texas style bbq. An Austin original. Been lovin’ it since I was a kid. Sure there are lots of bbq joints in town. But this place feels warm and cozy like home to me. It is usually not packed and always consistently good. On my top ten list for Austin. You won’t have to wait in line two hours here. Oh yea, try the cobbler!
