This is my go to haircut salon when I’m in Austin. I usually get my hair cut by Ricky, but have also gotten cuts from Abby and Tony. Every time I’m more than happy with what I got. The service is great. It’s no secret that Asian hair is different from other hair, so being of Asian descent, my hair needs to be cut by somebody who understands Asian hair. Everyone in Maxline understands Asian hair. The barbers in Maxline make sure to do a good job and don’t rush. They’re very friendly and I’ve found them to be quite stylish as well. Overall, this place has given me the best haircuts. I’m definitely coming back and have already recommended this place to several friends. The standard fee is just under $ 20 which I find very reasonable. It’s important to note that you should schedule an appointment in order to avoid long waits.

This review is overdue by about 2 years. I moved to Austin in 2011 after having lived in Asia for most of my life and quickly found that hairstylists here didn’t know how to cut Asian hair. Almost two years later I was referred to Maxline by a friend who gets his hair done by Ricky. However, at the time Ricky was getting a lot of clients and I wasn’t about to wait a week just for an appointment with a hairstylist I’ve never met, so I went with Shan who was relatively new there at the time. Long story short Shan has been the only guy to cut my hair every month for the past two years. The only times I’ve been unsatisfied were when he would finish the haircut and I’d ask for changes. Now I’ve learned my lesson. Trust your stylist. When they know what they’re doing and you don’t, they’ll turn you from a 3 to a 7, and Shan knows what he’s doing. Don’t believe me? Give Maxline a shot. Shan only works there two days out of the week so call and make an appointment. A haircut here is $ 18 but I always give $ 20. It’s a small monthly price to pay to look fly.

If there was an option for 0 stars, I would have picked it. Be SURE to check who your hairdresser is. Stay away from Shan. I just came back from a bad-dye job today that I could have literally done with a $ 10 box of dye from Wal-Mart. He said it would look lie the sample that he had but it turned out nothing like it. When I asked him to fix it, he was argumentative and his anger was easy to flair up. He told me to come back a couple of days later when he was working again for $ 45. Who has that kind of time and money committment though? If I paid $ 85 for your services then you should have the skills to deliver them. He was not at all receptive to anything that I wanted and even though I told him exactly what I wanted and did not want with photos, he seemed to disregard everything I said. Tl;dr, wait for another hairdresser if you get Shan

After a disastrously short haircut I got in China two years ago, I’ve been growing my hair out. I was afraid to even get a single trim. So needless to say, I was a little nervous when I went in to Maxline to get it cut today. I have thick, super long(past waist length), difficult to manage Asian hair, and it’s pretty rare for a barber to cut it right. However, Shan took a quick look at the pictures I brought in(the model had side bangs, long layers, and a rounded out back) and expertly and efficiently cut my locks. I couldn’t be happier with my new hair cut and will be returning in the future for trims.

I was in need of a quick haircut and Ricky got it done. Since this was last minute, I thought Chinatown would be the best bet in terms of availability and price, esp for Asian hairs. I called all 3 hair salons in Chinatown and Maxline was the only place where someone actually spoke proper English. Got an appointment for the same day and was assigned to Ricky by chance. I think he’s actually one of their better hairdressers. He was very fast and skilled and I can tell he knew what he was doing. He managed to tame my Asian hair in less than 20 mins. Even though we didn’t fully agree on what style would look nice, Ricky still did his best to find a nice compromise. For $ 16, I say this is a pretty good haircut! Not sure if I’ll come back here but if you’re shooting blind at a new hair salon, give this place a try. Just make sure to make an appointment. It’s located right next to First Chinese BBQ(took me a while to find it). Also, don’t be surprised by the interior. It looked like a make-shift salon converted from a Chinese restaurant to me.

Love this place. Ask for Shan. He’s amazing at cutting hair. I’ve been cutting my hair with him for almost a year now. Every time I go in for a haircut, everyone is so welcoming. I really appreciate the salon being open on a Sunday!

Extremely Disappointed!!! I read the reviews before I set my appointment for 3PM and hope for a decent cut. As I arrived 15 minutes earlier, I did not get started till 3:25PM. What’s the point to set up appointment?! I told Abby, the barber, that I want to cut an inch and half off and get rid of the hair splits at the end and also thinning my hair because I have a lot of hair. She spray water on my hair to get the cut done better which I have no problem. When she’s done cutting and while my hair are dripping water, she told me the cut is done. I was like«aren’t you going to blow dry my hair because it’s dripping. «She responded that when I called she specifically ask if I want cut, shampoo, blow dry and style. I say just cut, and she doesn’t have time to blow my hair because her next appointment is coming soon. First, I did say just cut but it’s not reasonable to leave the dripping water on my hair and hope for me to walk out the door like that. Second, her next appointment isn’t there yet. Third, when I got home, she did not cut off all the hair splits. Fourth, she did not thinning my hair much. Fifth, she charge $ 25 for a lousy cut, which with the same price, I can get a nice hair cut with style in my previous resident.(I just moved to this state that’s why I am looking for new hair salon). I expressed my feeling for at least blow my hair till it’s not dripping. She did it impatiently. Never going back!!!

I hate it! Worst hair cut ever by Ricky! He did not do what I asked for. Instead he did many layers on my hair. My hair looks all fuzzy and damaged! I hate it! He sold us a hair wax for 15 bucks, online is only 8 bucks.

I use to live in Austin, Texas. I had the best Hair Cut & High Lights with Abby @ Maxline Salon ! She always listen to what I want and pretty much I get what I want walking out of Maxline! The place looks & feel like a 5 Star Salon and only charge 2 star price. GREATDEAL ! Now I live in San Francisco. I still go to see her at lease once a Year. She is that Good !!! Take my word for it. You would not regret it!

My mane was getting out of control, so I took my sister’s advice and booked an appointment with Ricky. I have very long, straight Asian hair and have never been fully satisfied with my haircuts — it didn’t even occur to me to seek a stylist with similar ethnic background and hair type/texture. To all the Asian girls with similar hair troubles: call Ricky! You will not be disappointed. My hair sits between my bra band and waistband and the wash, cut(long layers and thinning out), and style totaled $ 40.

See Ricky for great haircut. Sundays are super busy, week days are less of a wait.

I’m super picky about my haircut. I will postpone a hair cut and let it grow insanely long instead of risking a bad hair cut. Guys have it so much easier, if the haircut sucks they can just shave it off or it will grow back in a week or two. For girls, it’s disaster for weeks. Maxline is located in Austin’s small«Chinatown». Before or after the hair appointment, I like to shop at the grocery store or eat at the restaurants nearby. The staff is decently friendly, they have questionable English ability. I’ve learned from many years of going to Asian run businesses that the best thing to do is pretend you don’t speak the language. You never know what comments you’ll hear about yourself. Anjela Johnson’s Nail Salon skit is so true. I always go to Cindy at Maxline. When I find a hair cutter that I like, I’m as loyal as they come. So if «Cindy not here, I come back lata»!

I went to see Ricky at the recommendation of a friend. I was paying $ 60 for a haircut but get as good a cut for $ 25! You should always take advantage of the shampoo — it was a wonderful 10 minute head massage. No additional fee! Ricky is entertaining, but often answers the phone in the middle of my cut(booking other clients). I am generally the only American in the place, so just a heads up if you aren’t comfortable being the outsider.

This is a cool salon. Fancy mirrors in a industrial-like new store. Ask for Amy. If you want one modern, chic, clean cut come here. Its relatively cheap and they put more attention to your hair. It is actually a steal compared to other main chains. They speak okay english(jsut giving you heads up). They have relaxing shampooing. I recommend eat first — the Chinese BBQ or the Saigon Phở place. Then cut. And do some grocery shopping if you need to.
