We moved East 2 years ago and were so happy to find this little place next to Bread Basket. Their breakfast tacos are awesome and inexpensive! When my family came to visit Austin last May I ordered over 20 tacos, they were quickly made and my family devoured them. They are always efficient and friendly!

Porfirio’s is in our hood– or actually we’re in theirs. They’ve been around for awhile. And they rock! At first I thought we might not suit– as they were a bit taciturn, did not take cash & cost more than many taco venders. Once i ate that first taco, it no longer mattered. Now they smile when I come in and order, then ask for extra salsa(so good!). Nothing beats their carne guisada tacos! One day we’ll explore other options but for now, carne guisada it is!

Tacos were small and overpriced for the size. Carne guisada tasted like canned chili. Less than 10 tables inside. Cash only. I rarely leave one star reviews but after a ball of meat was thrown into my taco(see photos), I was Extremely disappointed. Save your money… Try a different hole in the wall.

Maybe I got the cashier on a bad day because he was very rude and totally turned me off the place. The tacos were good(very salty which I actually prefer) but they were nothing to call home about. They are standard breakfast tacos, but I won’t go out of my way to get some again.

Cheap, quick, and pretty good. It seems like actual care went into these tacos. Freshly made flour tortillas, freshly grated cheese, and enough portions in each to fill me up. I was out $ 6 for three tacos plus a tip. CASHONLY Warning: The green salsa isn’t much more than watery peppers, but it still has quite the kick to it. If I was in a rush and needed to grab something quickly, I’d stop by here again.

*I graduated from UT and left Austin at the end of 2010. I didn’t really Unilocal then, so I’m coming back to some old haunts when I get back to the ATX. Porfirio’s was one of those spots that I only shared with a select few. I liked Ciscos, Juan-in-a-million, etc, but when I wanted to avoid the crowd, this was the Eastside breakfast spot. Glad to see that 3 years later it still holds up! Carne Guisada + Cheese = tender, delicious, awesome. Picadillo = old school, «reminds me of my youth» awesome Barbacoa = best in town They also chop and mix their bacon into their eggs, which I am a great fan of. Let’s just keep this between us though, ok?

The third star is simply for convenience of living one street away, a very quaint location that deserves appreciation however, i’m in the middle of eating my breakfast and the cheese taste moldy! I was willing to ignore the overly salty chorizo because I understand salt is preferred by the greater population, but I couldn’t ignore spending money on something I felt I shouldn’t eat. Luckily, they were willing to exchange me another type of taco and assured me the cheese had only been delivered the other day. Perhaps my taste buds were off this day or they goofed and used moldy cheese, but they deserve some stars for making the situation right.

Porfirio’s is old-school breakfast tacos. They’ve been around forever and as far as I’m concerned, they are as good today as they were when I first tried them 10 years ago, and good enough to keep me coming back. I get the bacon-egg-cheese taco on flour — the bacon is chopped and mixed with the egg, which makes the taco more flavorful — and chorizo-potato-cheese, which is(greasy, yes, and) so delicious. The salsas are spicy with good flavor. The service is fast. Not much ambiance, but that’s not why you’re here; you’re here for the tacos, and on that, they deliver.

I’m a fan of the breakfast tacos. Went with the bacon, egg, and cheese. The green salsa was excellent. I think it’s cash only.

They used to sell where I work from a truck. The bean and cheese and the picadillo and cheese were my favorites, but, I’ve had better taco’s. Basically what I’m saying is that I only ate theirs because they sold at my work and it was convenient, however, the picadillo and cheese(a.k.a. cheeseburger) was good hang over food. I wouldn’t go out of my way to drive to their restaurant. Especially when I have options like Enchiladas Y Mas and Dan’s.

I’ve been eating here for YEARS! I use to live across the street from here so this was our breakfast spot when no one felt like cooking. I’ve never eaten lunch here so I can only comment on the breakfast tacos, which in my opinion are always awesome! They are actually really cheap.(At least cheaper than Taco Cabana) During the week they are not really too crowded. You come in place your order and about a minute or 2 later it’s ready. Now Saturday mornings is another story some times the line is super long and you have to wait a good 15 minutes. But honestly, it’s worth it. I only wish I lived closer to here so that I would have more time in the mornings before work to swing by. All in all, I love Porfiro’s.

If you can crank out anything besides breakfast tacos as a breakfast taco institution, I give you the thumbs up. Not an «awesome, way to go» thumbs up, bur rather a «way to make the effort» thumbs up. Porfirio’s does a fine job in giving an adequately expansive enough, but hamburgers need not take precedence over the Austin early morn’ staple. So, with my staple being ordered, I found that the tubers are gross and stale, boasting that old sort of leathery film that comes with the territory of sittin’ still, not being eaten. The black beans were not bad. At least chalupas were offered. Though these little guys are always standard across the board, I just feel so much more satisfied when I indulge in one of these puppies at an actual Mexican-esque eatery such as Porfirio’s. I mean, a crunchy«fresh(?)» tostada with some creamy refried beans, cheese, lettuce, and tomato? Yes, please! Oh, and $ 1.75? Whew! Let’s evaluate now… bad breakfast taco and good chalupa. What is the deciding factor? Salsa. The green was horrendously bland. No thank ya for yer dang cond’ments! All in all, a good cheap breakfast, but certainly nothing to run towards. Plenty of fish in the sea.

Being from San Antonio, I sometimes get this elitist attitude when it comes to thinking that San Antonio owns the market for good Mexican breakfast tacos. Don’t get me wrong. I’ll take the Pepsi challenge against the best that Dallas, Houston and even Austin has to offer. With that said, I found it odd and even more so, surprising that Austin’s Porfirio’s Tacos knocked my taste buds out of the park. This little place is on the Eastside of Austin in an area that most people would not want to be caught after midnight. However, I have found that it is in these neighborhoods that something magical occurs when the taco fairies impart their secrets into the mind of many aspiring taco artists. Here is the breakdown: Bean, bacon and cheese taco: thick cut bacon chopped up into chunks and lightly stirred into refried beans then covered with cheddar cheese. The awesomeness level of this taco was so high, I swear it could solve world hunger. Try one and prove me wrong. Carne Guisada: You got carne and you got guisada. Put them together and this spicy meat and gravy was delicious. The meat was fork tender and had just the right amount of spices you would expect a good guisada to have. Add some cheese to this bad boy and you’ll scare a few Longhorn co-eds with your grito. Barbacoa: tender, moist and with a good flavor. This taco can hold its own with most of the San Antonio barbacoa joints. Chicharron and bean taco: This combination was something my taco imagination had never conjured, but it went very well and surprised me. Chicharron’s had a crispiness even after simmering in their salsa. Speaking of salsa. Porfirio’s doesn’t mess around with their hot stuff. These are simply jalapenos and maybe a serrano or two blended up and served just like that. It will definitely put hair on a man’s chest. Porfirio’s tortillas were homemade and great tasting. If you haven’t figured it out by now, this place earned a special place in my taco shaped heart. It had to be something special to break through my San Antonio taco snobbiness.
