So it’s a little bit of a sad day when otherwise cool businesses eventually wind down, and such has been the recent case with Slate, who announced that they’re shuttering and as such has discounted things in a way usually associated with loony furniture or used car ads. End result? Some pretty downright nifty threads on the relative cheap, many though certainly not pauper central but conversely affordable, and even given the paucity of goods on the walls, you never would have known the difference most days, given the demeanor and helpfulness of staff. I don’t know the full-on backstory(and frankly who knows how necessary that kinda thing is), but I’m dissapointed to see them go and think the concept’s plenty cool. so here’s hoping if this isn’t the local magic thread elixir, something else will be. And in the mean time? I grabbed a mighty cool, super comfy shirt that I’m sure I’ll be rolling around in for awhile. Partly to lend a helping hand to a place that had been a cool idea, and partly, cause, hey… nice shirt, right?

«Hey man, want a beer or somethin’?» Those are the best words that can be uttered to me when I walk in to your place of business, and the words that were asked of me when I first walked in here. I dig a place that sells some Ben Sherman threads yet doesn’t feel like I’m at a night club. I don’t like to shop generally. I always find out about sales at other stores after they’re over and generally picked over and devoid of clothing that fits me. At Slate they always seem to have stuff on sale, which is great. I signed up for their email list and don’t get blasted with a bunch of unnecessary emails. I think I’ve gotten two, and they’ve both been for some pretty good sales that I’ve taken advantage of. It’s on the pricier side of clothing, with the best comparison being Service Men’s wear both in brands and price. I’d recommend checking it out.

This is a neat store with a well designed layout and very friendly staff. They have a reasonably diverse collection of men’s shirts and jeans. While they do have some more ornate styled shirts, they also have slim fitting simpler shirts as well from the likes of Ben Sherman. I’ll have to come by here sometime when I have more time to try on a few things, but it’s definitely worth a visit. Great t-shirt selection too!

I’d have to disagree with Austin L.‘s review. I didn’t think Slate was all that«metro»…whatever that is suppose to mean. I found the store to have a great selection and thank god for a men’s store in my neighborhood! They have everything from conservative styles like Tailorbryd to more trendy stuff like Ben Sherman. I got a cool t-shirt made by a local artist. They even gave me a beer while I shopped. It’s worth checking it out for yourself!

I dropped in on the grand opening of Slate with my honey. Because I have such a high opinion of Soigné’s merchandise, I was hoping to find him a Christmas present. My vision was that he’d find two or three things he liked and I’d be able to afford one of them. However, no such thing happened. The stuff at Slate is beautifully presented, true. However, it’s very«metro» in styling, if you know what I mean. Not quite as bad as some of the foofier men’s boutiques in town(Estilo, for example), but definitely along the same lines. My sweetie remarked after we left, «I don’t know why anyone would want to wear shirts that have guns printed on them at this time in history. Don’t we have enough of them in real life?» My man is not exactly what you’d call conservative in terms of taste. He is, however, quite particular about striking that balance between flair and foolish, and for him the whole metro thing veers way too far into the foolish side of things. In other words, he doesn’t believe that the amount of hair gel a guy wears is connected to his attractiveness. For those who have men like this in their lives, however, this place will no doubt make it onto your list.
