Make things, Meet People, Buy Stuff. This is Wondercraft’s mantra, and both a winning and fulfilled description of a spot that is, all puns intended, definition of a genuine Austin jewel. Located in the up and coming portion of the East Side’s Cesar Chavez, Wondercraft is as serene as it is adorable, combining everything great about a local jewelry/crafts shop and DIY Craft Bar. I ventured to Wondercraft originally after procrastinating for about 3 hours on Pintrest the night before, deciding that my own personal jewelry and accessories have become bland, boring and needing of some pop/pizazz. I hopped onto Unilocal in search of a spot to bead or mold or whatever those creative types do… Wondercraft’s glowing reviews and proximity to my house immediately drew me in. My experience at Wondercraft transcended all my expectations whilst completely fulfilling their mantra. See below: 1) Make Things: I spent 3 hours in the bright and relaxed studio atmosphere, gabbing away with Beth, one of the co-owners, making a polymore(sculpy) necklace. Wondercraft had every tool and color one could possibly need and Beth was quick to help me with anything, sometimes even before I could ask. Prices are beyond fair as well. 2) Meet People: Wondercraft would be an excellent spot to bring a group or take a class.(I’m considering taking a group of girlfriends here for my birthday)… Going during the heart of the work day, I actually happened to be the only one using the studio at the time. However, I felt right at home, as co-owner Beth’s company is as enjoyable as it is helpful — chit chatting with me the whole time whilst making some of her own crafts(sold at the store as well) 3) Buy Things: Wondercraft’s selection of jewelry and art is primarily sourced from local Austin artists, unbelievably cute and reasonably priced. Their ambiance and pricing is void of the stuffiness or shades of snobbery and over escalation of price found at similar«but we are a boutique!» spots. In close, I walked into Wondercraft stressed from current hustle and bustle of everyday life, and left zenned out and happy as I do after the best of yoga classes. In short, Wondercraft is Wonderful.

«These earrings are $ 5? My eyes must be worse than I thought»… I thought. But no, they WERE $ 5. And some funky skull ones were $ 12. And a fun little wristlet was $ 10. And good lord I should never have discovered this spot because I walked out with a little Ferrari(?) bag full of stuff I really don’t need. Part of the ongoing city wide crafting obsession, WonderCraft sells all local(awesome) stuff from folks that are part of the craft revolution. Adorable jewelry, bags, baby stuff, knit things, etsy items are available for purchase. They used to do it out of an airstream — oh so trendy — but now have this shotgun style brick and mortar spot. Also, you know how lots of times you go to places with local goods and local is just synonymous for haphazard madness that someone dreamed up while half schnockered on bad wine and glue fumes? That’s not this. This stuff is cuuuuuuute. WC doubles as a crafting place! That’s right — you can cut and screenprint and glue and sew at this spot too. If your SO is tired of antique buttons strewn across the coffee table, hot glue stuck to every surface and mile long hobby lobby bills, this spot’s a welcome refuge among other people who want to create the great. Or just buy it. Like me.
