From what I understand, they’ve been around since the 70’s, so certainly Thundercloud has become an appealing option for some people. Not being an Austin native, however, my experience hasn’t been filtered through a «nostalgic lens»… so I feel my review is properly unbiased. I just don’t get it. The difference between the small and large is quite miniscule(both are very small) … the meat(in this case, turkey) looked like the pressed type that one would typically avoid at the deli… and the final product was basic and pedestrian. It literally looked and felt like something I’d pick up in the gas station when no other options are available(albeit fancier wrapping, probably fresher but at several times the price) The décor was warm and modern and the employees were predictably Austin hip, but I really just don’t get it. I don’t write this review with any sort of malicious intent… hey, good for Thundercloud for being in business so long with devoted customers… it’s just that when I leave an eating establishment, I want to feel as if I got my money’s worth… at Thundercloud, I did not. I simply cannot imagine eating there again when there are so many other alternatives that offer so much more in the way of quality and quantity.

Austin club is the way to go! Long time Ive gone to the william cannon, Manchaca, and Lake Austin boulevard locations and all of them are adequately staffed with good food!

Thundercloud. They are who you think they are. They are an Austin original and they are consistent across the board. If you do not know about them you should go and if you do then you know they are consistent. I have never had a complaint at any location. This location does seem to get really busy and the staff isn’t the fastest group in the world but they are friendly and they get my order right. I like the Austin Club, Roast Beef and Avocado, and the basic Club. White or Wheat breads are both equally tasty.

With Thundercloud locations everywhere, you have no reason to visit any other sandwich joint. The quality of their sandwiches are much higher than the«eat fresh» restaurant. Service is generally always top notch. I don’t ask for much from a sandwich shop employee. Just make my sandwich well and they always have. This location is much roomier than it looks from the outside. There’s plenty of space for a large group. I’m a run in and grab it kind of guy, but the dining room is well kept if you’re interested to dine in. The one disappointment is that they’re always out of bean sprouts! I love them, but can rarely get them!

What’s not to like about thunderclouds?! I truly don’t have a memory when I didn’t eat thunderclouds(the location on lake Austin Blvd. was my second home when I went to Austin high down the street). The bread(the whole wheat) i s outstanding! The California club is way above average(it had avocados). It’s an Austin institution, that MUST be visited at least a half a dozen times a month. This location is freakin awesome as well, you won’t be disappointed!

Thundercloud might be my favorite sandwich shop … that Austin Club is pretty amazing! This location is convenient and easy to get in and out of. The employees are always nice too! Now the Austin Club is smoked chicken breast with avocado and bacon. I also get a mayo and mustard combo and say yes to pepper, salt and thunder sauce. All these things just make even better! I like both of their bread options as well. The avocado and the bacon with all the condiments and veggies just makes this sandwich so perfect! I have also had their cookies and they are delicious! My friend regularly gets their salads here and she says they are delicious too. I really do not know how someone could not be a fan of Thundercloud … I certainly am and will continue to seek out the Austin Club!

I like their subs, I hate the upsell. I don’t want cheese or sprouts or extra anything. I don’t want the sickening Thunder sauce. A BLT means Bacon Lettuce Tomato, with mayo. Not Thunder sauce or cheese or onions, pickle or anything else. An egg salad sandwich consists of chopped eggs and mayo on bread, nothing else and sure as hell no Thunder Jizz. They can make them good if they don’t talk you into making them taste like ass crack hell. Just say NO!

It’s not mind blowing, but it is what it is(sandwiches– not artisanal, not gourmet… Just sandwiches). I had no problem with the people who work there, they were all very friendly and I was in and out quickly. You have to wonder what sort of attitude the people are giving that complain on here. You get what you give guys. I wish everyone would remember that whenever they’d get any customer service experience. Act like an entitled A-hole, and you’re not going to get any above and beyond service. Nada chicken sandwich is good for vegetarians(which I am) — just don’t assume everyone knows your personal preferences.

@MeganC First off. Jesus …Christ! I’m seriously embarrassed for you. Not only are you a pretentious«vegetarian» You’re also the perfect example of first world problems. People like you have no business eating out. Just stay at home and monitor the people touching your precious veggies. I find it disgusting you would make such an ordeal over this petty insignificant situation. It’s also very telling that this store has such high stars. yet you give them 1 star because your stupid sandwich was tainted with meat hands. oooooooh How about you take a trip to the poverty stricken areas of the city and see how this ridiculous review holds up with people who can’t even get a sandwich. You obviously aren’t from Austin. And if you are… which I highly doubt, I suggest you crawl back to whatever stuck up .self entitled place you came from. I think anyone who reads that outlandish outburst you call a review will agree that«rude girl» should’ve done more than roll her eyes at you. P. S. You mentioned no mayo or cheese so I assume you were going the vegan route. That delicious breaded patty is loaded with egg fyi. Sincerely. . #Sorryforyou

THEWORSTCUSTOMERSERVICEEXPERIENCEEVER. I ordered a nada chicken sandwich, no cheese, no mayo. So blatantly obvious it’s a vegetarian sandwich. Dude making my sandwich prepares another full of meat sandwich and then immediately starts touching all the veggies on mine. I complain, he looks confused. A girl next to him(not the manager) inserts herself, rolls eyes, informs me I need to tell them first if it’s a vegetarian sandwich(???), then says«It’s not a big deal.» Manager makes an appearance, asks what’s going on, we all inform her and rude girl keeps rolling her eyes. Dude removes my veggies, washes his hands and finishes. Manager comes to take our money, we let her know that we’re unhappy with rude girl’s comment, manager says«I’m sorry if you were offended.» NOTANAPOLOGY. Without missing a beat, rude girl walks by and proclaims«Meat is flying all around here!» We look at dude in total shock, dude looks totally mortified, manager turns around to give us our receipt. We tell her that rude girl strikes again. She says«I’m really sorry.» Rude girl is never redirected, never acknowledges her assholeness. We come here all of the time and rude girl is always here. But never has she acted so poorly. Also, I always watch my sandwiches being made and never have I had to say out loud«don’t let you meat hands touch my obviously veggie sandwich.

This review is for any Thundercloud Subs, not just the W. William Cannon location… If you’ve lived in Austin any serious length of time, you’re bound to have visited a Thundercloud Subs by now. If you want a consistently high quality, inexpensive, tasty sandwich served by a friendly staff, this is the place to go. My fave subs alternate between the traditional club, California club, egg salad, pastrami, and nada chicken. But you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. I never pay more than 8 bucks for a sandwich, chips, and drink. And you’re supporting a local business when you eat here. Along with half the hipster population in Austin, which TC always seems to employ.

Smoked mesquite chicken + homemade potato salad! I gave the employee a hard time because I’m a fan of macaroni salad and they don’t make that BUT since he personally made the potato salad I told him I’d give it a try and let him know I liked it on Unilocal.Wellllll… drumroll… I thought it was AMAZING! Ate it all! Thank you to the employee for recommending it to me. I advise everyone to give it a try!

I like that you can call your order in, in advance so you don’t have to wait on line. The kids meals are a real bargain, and include cookie, drink and chips. The adult subs werre nothing spectacular, but were fresh, with fresh ingredients. I had a pastrami and cheese and it was quite good. The only thing that really bothered me, and kept me from giving them a higher rating is hygene. The sandwich makers don’t wear disposable gloves, and to be honest were not the cleanest cut individuals you would expect to see. If I were in management, I woulld be concerned that the health department would cite this store or shut it down.

Anyone who lived in Austin back in the day must roll they’re eyes at this place… way back when Thundercloud started it was really amazing, now it’s a half assed overpriced Subway and not even that good. The Ft long was like a half Subway size. And seriously they only offer lettuce, and tomatoes for free, seriously! Then everything else is just pay for ad-ons, olives and pickles, are you serious your charging me for that! So back to the olden days the bread was organic it was the size of Subways, and all the ingredients were organic, the guy told me that ingredients aren’t organic any longer. I’m a vegetarian they used to offer seitan, vegi burgers and other cool vegetarian options, now all they have is a fake chicken. Don’t bother it’s heyday is over, and now it’s just a huge rip off. Seems like a theme here in Austin, all these businesses franchised out and they turned to crap.

They have gluten free bread and only for a 1.70 upcharge. I always get the veggie delight and now have added banana peppers to my sandwhiches to try something new. I know. Such a dare devil! The service always quick, they have screwed up my order royally only once and made normal mistakes a few times. Over all they are nice, clean and speedy. Do watch them, as sometimes they can forget what you told them just a min. After you said it. Which I could imagine is due to rush times and brain farts…

I have no idea why people like this place so much. I was so not impressed. There was nothing at all spectacular about their sandwiches. They weren’t inedible or anything but their sandwiches you could just as easily make at home. This would be a 3 star rating for me but the employees don’t wear gloves while they make your food. That’s pretty disgusting whether they washed their hands or not. If some stranger came up to you while eating, told you he just washed his hands, then stuck his bare finger straight into your sandwich would you still eat it? Yeah, how is this any different. Nasty to say the least.

Thundercloud Subs. Does a sub shop get more Austiny? I think not. All Thunder cloud shops are essentially the same feel. You have some hipsters(no offense whatsoever) back there making great subs everyday of the week. The bread is baked and delivered every day to their locations and one can easily tell after the first bite. The ingredients hand chopped each day as well. I really enjoy the Austin club or Texas Tuna. The Austin club is sliced chicken breast, avocado and bacon. Of course you can always add lettuce, onion, cheese, thundersauce, or tomatoes free of charge. You can also add other extras for .25 each such as mushrooms, sprouts, hummus, and olives amongst other things. The texas tuna is tuna, jalepenos and avocado. Also probably the most underrated potato salad in Austin. This stuff is good and made in house. They include celery, onions and a few other seasonings that make it very good. I used to go here so much about 2 – 3 of the staff knew my face and would shoot the shit with me everytime I came in. They are a good bunch and usually very positive. If you haven’t been to Thundercloud then you cant call yourself an Austinite. Go here for your next lunch and thank me later.
