Cheap, fast, delicious american-style Chinese food. I’ve tried a few things via phone order, and I have loved everything! If you need to satisfy that fake Chinese craving(you can’t tell me you haven’t been there) and/or you are drunk and need some rice to fill you up, this place can do the trick. The employees are friendly and they are open super late. So, grab a movie, a drink, and some cheap food and call it a night. You won’t be disappointed!

I love this place. If you go into it without presuming it to be anything other than a decent neighborhood Chinese takeout, you will too. Open late, affordable, and also a convenience store. Get the Brussels sprouts dish with your protein of choice. It’s delicious.

Just like most reviews, from the outside, it’s sketchy, it looks like it’s the worst idea to get the food from here. I swear I was prepared to sit in the toilet for a couple hours. However, inside is pretty clean. The food is good. It’s not good good but it’s good. I would go here again. I had the Mongolian beef and the shrimp lo mein. They’re very ordinary, nothing special about them.

My sister and I ordered to go about a week ago, She ordered shrimp Lo Mein, and I ordered General Tso Chicken. I love the location right on Guadalupe and Lamar area, however the staff can be a bit dry and the food is good, just not great. The last time I went I ordered General Tso chicken, I waited for about 25 minutes, and the chicken was still pretty doughey on some pieces. The hours are nice, and the location just north of UT and in Hyde Park just makes it more convenient. I will be back, but probably not for the General Tso.

A-OK is definitely the perfect description of Wok ‘N Express. Tasty, not delicious, but totally hits the cheap Chinese take out craving. Egg rolls are great! Great place for cheap, A-OK chinese take out(vs. spending $$$ at P.F. Chang’s or Chinatown)

Hot and sour soup and orange chicken were delicious! We had order for pickup and it was great! I am very picky when it comes to my hot and sour soup and orange chicken and I was thouroughly satisfied. I would definitely order Chinese from them again.

It’s not the worst Chinese food I have had, but it’s definitely not the best either. I found everything to be pretty bland. The wonton soup was definitely lacking flavor. Not only is this place a Chinese fast food stop it is also a convenient store as well, which I found to be kinda odd and awesome at the same time. They offer delivery and the price point is very reasonable. I don’t know if I will ever order from here again but if you want mediocre fast Chinese food you will definitely get your money’s worth and they will also deliver it to you.

You want extra spicy!!! THEYGIVEYOUEXTRASPICY. I love this place. I just wish the beer was colder. When I get home I have to put it in the freezer for a long time before I can drink it.

Recently moved from 6 years in Korea to Austin(near the triangle specifically). Noticed this place my first couple days but didn’t know exactly what it was looking from outside. Eventually went in and had the Chicken Pad Thai. Jaw drop. Amazing taste and VERY generous with the chicken for the price. Seriously, there was easily a 1⁄3 if not a ¼ lb of chicken in that dish. Second visit the General Chicken. Heavy bag walking out, smell wafting out from the bag. Getting home, digging in, this is the Americanized Asian food I missed while in Korea. Great food, amazing value and extremely friendly and gracious people serving there.

My single girl heart. This is your Panda Express, delivery version at like 10PM. Expect nothing more, expect nothing less. Delivery typically takes 30 minutes, the charge is $ 3 I think(?), and you have to call in and give your CC info(they don’t just save it after a while with your address like trusty little Domino’s) if you aren’t going to be paying cash. I owe them many a solo chica night in sweats with wine and my laptop. Next to 888, they have my loyalty and clogged arteries.

To me, Wok ‘N Express fulfills my Chinese cravings when I can’t make it to Chinatown. It’s not the greatest food, but it will do. I’ve had the combination fried rice, which is actually really good, as well as the Mongolian Chicken and Salt and Pepper Chicken. The latter two are okay; neither of them were overly impressive. The Egg Drop Soup is to die for though. That stuff is delicious and even has some corn in it to add a little flavor and depth.

Seriously an underrated place around campus. Plenty of places to find thai food around downtown/UT, but this is the place to go to satisfy the good ol’ chinese craving. Call in a head to get your order prepared quicker that their already SUPER quick service! Haven’t been disappointed yet!

Hot and sour soup is great. It is spicy and delicious. Don’t test the capabilities of spiciness in the main dishes unless you’re truly prepared for the heat! Their Chef is quite capable of making your tongue catch fire if you ask for it. I love it!

I was unimpressed with the taste or temperature of my chicken pad thai but I’m much more unhappy with the food poisoning I’m currently experiencing 24 hours later. I will never eat here again, and if you do I’d avoid anything with meat.

Had their food once before, and it wasn’t bad. But just recently, I tried calling during their delivery hours(over ten times) and never got an answer. Only a machine that said«answering system off.» This is just unacceptable. I just wanted some sweet and sour chicken.

Capsule review: Wok N’ Express ekes out three stars on the combination of a decent beer selection on the convenience store side and the mere existence of Chinese carryout in Hyde Park.(They are the only game in town, unless you want to do the Mama Fu’s at the Triangle, and you don’t.) Full review below. In terms of setup, Wok N’ Express is a combination convenience store/Chinese carryout place at the corner of 45th and Guadalupe with counter service and some indoor seating. Mostly the staff eat in there, so dining in feels a bit like being in someone else’s living room. So, you can get traditional Chinese(stir fries, noodles, fried rolls, soups) instant-like from this quasi-buffet setup that’s under glass and heat lamps, or order off a menu that means you’ll at least get food from scratch. It really doesn’t make that much difference: it’s all essentially bland, starchy, salty, and fatty – not in an awful way, but also unlikely to exceed your expectations unless they are supremely modest. Portions are big and very cheap, and they’re open late-ish, so if you’ve put off making dinner until becoming hangry, live in Hyde Park, and want something fast and cheap, phone in a pickup order(they also deliver, but we live six or seven blocks away) and you could really do a lot worse. The store itself sells booze until midnight to save you from being forced into Walgreens’ awful selection and has a good assortment of craft beers and a few decent bottles of wine. I think there might be some scattered Asian groceries on the shelf. The staff do their jobs without succumbing to a compulsively smiley corporate ethos. Thought of as a walking-distance resource, Wok N’ Express fills a niche in the Hyde Park ecosystem, and I’ll be back. It’s certainly not a destination, though.

After reading multiple reviews and talking to a few friends I decided to give this place a go. I live in Hyde Park so Wok n Express is only a few minutes away from me and I love convenience! I ordered General Chicken and hot and sour soup to-go. Took less time than I was told on the phone. As soon as I arrived, I was given my food paid and left. The gentlemen at the counter was very polite. I get home to eat this delicious smelling Chinese food –and boy was it good. The chicken had just enough crunch to it, so I could tell it was fresh. I was very impressed by the flavor the chicken and the texture. But then, tragedy struck. I wake up at 4:30 in the morning WITHTHEWORSTHEARTBURNOFMYLIFE. I have never experienced such painful and annoying heartburn in my life. I’m not sure what to credit this to other than the Chinese food. tl;dr Great, yummy Chinese food but make sure you have Tums around when you’re finished.

I’m hesitant to write this review. You see — I really want to love Wok ‘N Express. It’s one of the few totally not-terrible Chinese food restaurants in Austin. It’s in an old corner store. In fact, it is still kind of IS a corner store. It’s got a funny name. It’s in Hyde Park. The prices are reasonable. Generally, the portions are large. There’s a LOT going for it. I’ve frequented Wok ‘N Express at least 5 times. Each time I have ordered the same thing(General Tso’s Chicken). Each time I have received a different meal. My meals have varied substantially in the amount of food and the quality of food. One time, I received an incredibly fresh, crispy, hot meal. One time I received a significantly smaller meal. One time I received a soggy, sloppy, mess of poor quality chicken pieces. I understand there is a lot to like here. I’m a huge fan of that. I also understand at a place that serves the same menu all day and to varying crowds, it’s hard to always stock fresh, hot food, and it might be easier to keep some under a heat lamp. But somehow, I believe that can’t be right. Let’s raise the bar. One of the marks of a good restaurant is a good menu that can be ordered with some amount of consistency and quality over a period of time. The more a restaurant can lower the margin of And I can’t say I found that at Wok ‘N Express. Sometimes it’s delicious. Sometimes it’s less than. Fix that, and you’ll have something pretty amazing here.

I have lived right next door to this place for over a year now, so it’s high time I wrote a review. For the price and convenience, Wok n’ Express is just about as good as it gets! Their food is surprisingly good for a cheap take-out/delivery joint. I’m not a huge fan of their beef dishes(I just don’t like the quality of the meat), but just about everything else is excellent! At only $ 1.85, the large Hot & Sour soup is a tasty steal, add a couple of pork egg rolls on at $ 1/piece, and you have a pretty cheap and awesome meal. Other dishes I love: Salt & Pepper Shrimp(as well as pork), wonton soup(get the large and it comes with Bok Choy!), lemon grass chicken, all of the fried chicken dishes(sesame, orange, general tsao), the wok n’ express fried rice(has all the meat including Chinese sausage), and the crab rangoons. Did I mention they have a REALLY decent beer selection and Maine fountain soft drinks? Give this place a try, you won’t be sorry!

I find it’s always best to sleep on it before you write a bad review. As you will be able to see from my previous reviews, I’ve never written one before. My bad review isn’t based on the food. I have never eaten at Wok ‘N Express before. After a LONG day, my husband and I find ourselves wondering what we will do for dinner on a Saturday evening. It’s going on 9:00 and we haven’t eaten dinner… we’re tired and hungry! Not feeling like leaving my house I do my due diligence in searching Unilocal for Asian delivery. I find this establishment and I’m thinking great, it has pretty good reviews, they deliver and they even print their delivery radius on their menu… which my house is in! When we called to place the order we are told that our house is too far. I counter with explaining that my house is within the delivery area printed on their menu, available online. The lady on the phone simply states that her manager says it’s too far. I totally understand having specific delivery areas and not wanting to deliver to neighborhoods that are too far. What I’m not okay with is publishing your delivery radius and not adhering to it. I’ve included a couple of photos to illustrate my point. Maybe Wok ‘n Express should consider removing this map from their menu. Then they could arbitrarily deny delivery to people without being held accountable for it.
