So sad. It’s now a BBQ restaurant! Didn’t bother trying it. We used to enjoy coming here at least once during our annual Avalon vaca. The food was satisfactory and the mariachi band was always fun. End of an era.

A good Mexican place to eat. I don’t like Mexican food too much but the tacos were very good. Nice seating with clear windows/curtains(like plastic see thru curtains). The taco was very good!

Poor service. Had to wait 25 minutes for a burrito a few tacos and nachos. Pico Gallo is good. ‘Authentic’ tacos only have one corn tortilla. Steak Taco could use more flavoring. Chicken taco is pretty good but could use some salsa verde. Burrito is good but also ordered some avocado on the side and all that came was the pit. Wtf. Also burrito was cut in half making it hard to eat the burrito way. Had to use a fork. All the cilantro was not chopped finely enough. Nachos good, but lacking sour cream. Guacamole is bland and needs lime and salt. Chips were burnt like a piece of unfortunate toast. They do have a good variety of Mexican type coca cola products. Rampant negatives throughout wish I could give less than one star.

So sad that I found out about this place the last weekend in Avalon. I’m from California and know about legit, authentic tacos… and they’re apparently in Avalon at The Real Enchilada. Toppings are correct: white onions, cilantro and a side of lime for squeezing on top — all encased in a homemade corn tortilla. I ordered chips and guacamole for the group and two tacos for myself: one chicken, one pork. The chicken was a little dry but I liked that it was white meat. The pork was awesome, tender, juicy and without any overwhelming sauce(typical for Taquerias that have low quality meat). Everyone at the table was highly pleased with their meals, the only thing we’re upset about it finding it the last weekend at the Shore… sad. Don’t worry The Real Enchilada — I’ll be back next season!!!

Horrible and over priced. Don’t believe me? Order some«queso» and you will get microwaved spoiled velveeta cheese for $ 5! Chicken was very dry and guacamole was very sour. I love onions but they will throw a ton of onions on their fish tacos claiming it is pico de gallo. Pico de gallo is not all onion! Avoid the place, shut it down and let’s get something better in there… bring back Donnelly’s for you true Avaloners!

Awful. The wait staff was canceled for the entire day. I am sure since there was almost no one there, there are no tips to be had. The food was devoid of flavor except the pile of raw onion that was on everthing. It looked like a cool spot from the street, but failed every which way I can think of. Plus, it was not cheap eats considering how bad the food is.

UNDERNEWMANAGEMENT-NOTTHESAMEFOOD!!! I had been going to the real enchilada for years and loved the food, never had a bad meal. I was extremely dissatisfied when I brought my food home to find that the two taco salads I ordered had very little to no lettuce and the chicken in the salads had no seasoning and tasted and looked like canned chicken. Only one of the salads had dressing, the other was forgotten. The two burritos I ordered were okay but I would not choose to go back.

I will never be back here again. I took my coworker here because last year, under the old owners, i guess, the food was really good. we both got burritos. her order was completely wrong. i got a chicken burrito and i have never had chicken that dry in my life. i tried ordering take out today for myself, this time getting the pork instead. the pork has little to no flavor and i asked for no beans… i swear the gave me double. i heard bad reviews about the service there from coworkers and i should have just listened. avoid this place!

I think my Unilocal account establishes the fact that yours truly has a lot of allergies, so I have to ask about ingredients quite a bit when I dine out. Now I don’t mean to let the cat out of the bag, but imagine my surprise when I found out that they cook their chicken in a beef stock base that has milk protein. After a few more questions, we finally settled on fish tacos. I asked them to hold off on the butter and just grill them with just salt, pepper, and olive oil. And guess what? They were actually pretty damned good. The pico de gallo wasn’t bad, either. They should skip the filler ingredients and just cook from their heart. It’s obvious that the chef can make a good dish without all the add-ins. I recommend giving them a try and asking them to go au natural. And definitely try to stop in on a day that they have cactus available. Don’t forget to bring cold beverages, too, as this is a BYOB!

I like… outdoor seating area, BYOB, menu sounded good, chips and salsa, guac was ok. What if… The queso wasn’t like velveta, the chicken wasn’t dry, the server was slightly more knowledgable and attentive. I wish… i didn’t decide to try Mexican food at the shore.

We used to like this place. We went on our 1st night back in Avalon this yr. We will not return. There was 1 server on a Sat. PM. The food was fair, when we finally got it. We were 3 adults, 3 kids. First meal came out, wrapped to go, in about 10 min. It took 30 min for next 3 meals, then 30 min for 1 more. At this point we spoke with manager. Sent back incorrect order & asked for our little girl’s taco — please! Server said kitchen wouldn’t give her food cuz they said she already got it. What??? There were 5 staff back there, & no one helping her. Manager comp’d our meals, but didn’t seem all that interested in our feedback. I predict they won’t last long. We unfortunately went to Beach Burger tonite. Even worse. Only good thing there is milkshake. If you are going to be a burger place, at least have decent rolls, a good burger, & fries. The cup they came in said hot fresh fries. They were neither. So far, dining out in Avalon this yr is a bust… hope it gets better!

Excellent! Fresh food, friendly staff, service was excellent! I’m addicted to the taco salad and the dressing! Had takeout and ate there 4 times in 3 weeks. Very cozy and kids loved it too. Prices are great! Highly recommended.

Great outdoor space. BYO and half priced tacos during happy hour… all good. That said, they had tasteless tacos and other food(nachos and sauces). Other than the fact that taco bell is far superior, I did enjoy sitting outside here.

I ordered the King of the Sea burrito with guacomole and a fish taco. My husband ordered the chicken quesadilla. First off, the burrito was amazing. The fish in it was very very fresh and delicious and the guacamole was definitely homemade. The fish taco was decent but nothing special. Finally, the chicken quesadilla was very good, and the cheese was melted perfectly.

Had the nachos platter … the worst excuse for nachos I have ever seen. Cold shredded cheese, watery lettuce and a handful of canned beans. The kitchen forgot the guacamole, which we hoped would lend something to the dish… just to find that it had no redeemable flavors to add to the mess. My 6 year-old niece could make better nachos than this«authentic» «Mexican» restaurant. We were originally planning on ordering more, but decided to go elsewhere for real food. The waitress was fine, but the food was inexcusable. I will never ever return to this establishment.

The food is decent, but I will never return because of how OBNOXIOUS the owner was. A friend opened a beer bottle cap using the edge of the table(maybe wrong, but not that big of a deal) and the owner FLIPPED out on him! At first, we thought he was joking… I chimed in saying, a simple ‘please don’t do that’ would have worked just fine, and then he flipped out on me. I can’t believe someone who is actually a business owner can treat customers so disrespectfully. I will never spend another dollar in there… And will not be surprised when they’re out of business. Note to owner: Cheer up buddy. Life is good. Stop spreading your misery

Went for a quick bite during our vacation. Very kid friendly, BYOB and the service(on a very slow, kind of pre-high season night) was very attentive. The other reviews are pretty spot on — we enjoyed the food and the atmosphere would be great had been had it not been so quiet that night — for us that made it perfect. Guacamole was great(as it must be in a place like this) and I enjoyed my enchiladas(one each of pork, beef and chorizo!). it’s a great, quick choice when you’re not looking to cook and don’t want to spend a fortune(3 adults and 2 kids came to about $ 55 — the same amount we spent on pizza for dinner with one less adult the night before). Disappointed they didn’t have any fish that night though — but that may have kept my mother-in-law(who is allergic) alive for a few more days…

The pollo loco is slamming and the Habanero sauce is No joke. Ask for it! Delicious! Very affordable and fast. Cool seating arrangement outside too.

Great, real tacos! On corn tortillas, no fluffy flour tortillas :-p Lots of cilantro and onion. I had one fish(mahi mahi) and one beef. Good stuff! The chips and salsa were also good. I liked the little covered backyard seating area too, though the little kids who were at the next table were kind of rowdy and running around. That’s not the restaurant’s fault though!

I really like it! $ 1.50 tacos for happy hour can’t be beat– I tried the shrimp, grilled fish, and pork. Pork was my favorite, only because the fish ones had cilantro in more of a lettuce-like amount. I like cilantro, but this was a little too strong for me. All the ingredients are very fresh, their sauces are flavorful, and the salsa was very good. I can’t see why folks go for greasy pizza and subs at the beach when there is this wonderful Mexican option. They have adorable, comfortable outdoor seating, and they are BYO(grab tequila and they will make you a margarita). Burrito sizes and prices are comparable to any of the chain burrito places, but with quite a bit more charm.
