I have an out of state ID… never had a problem with it until trying to get into this place. They have a new boneheaded bouncer that apparently doesn’t know Washington licences. If you’re young looking and don’t want to be hassled trying to legally get a drink, don’t go here.

Was not welcomed upon sitting at the bar for quite some time, despite being 2 of 8 others in the whole establishment. Prices were high for shots, and the place closed super early. Had to flag down the guy when we wanted more to drink, also. One was too busy chatting with someone, and the other doing drink inventory. Isn’t that something that could be done when you don’t have thirsty customers?

What a bunch of difficult overpriced meatheads! This place is not a place for locals or tourists. They are way overpriced. The bouncers are incredibly heavy handed, the drinks are watered down. The manager is tool. Don’t go to this place unless you wanted to get manhandled my a bunch of guys who are not qualified to tie their own shoelaces.

The food here is hit and miss but mostly a miss. I’ve had my calamari come out mushy multiple times from the batter not being cooked. Surprising since the food comes from the custom house next door and I’ve never had an issue there. This place is a hot spot for tourists and college students and it appears that the main focus of this establishment is selling as much booze as possible, hoping that all the drunk people don’t notice the bad cocktails and even worse service. I have been to Mr. Ricks many, many times. The bar tenders are not friendly and you can often feel ignored at the bar while trying to get a drink. I will spare everyone the details of the encounter I had here that is really the reason behind my one star review. I’ve never left an establishment feeling more mortified and attacked then I was here, by an employee no less. Maybe the bartender thought I was a drunk college girl, or maybe he thought I was a thief, or maybe he just likes to pick on people that innocently come into an establishment ready to spend their hard earned paycheck on drinks, food and a nice time. Unfortunately(for him and me) I wasn’t drunk. I hadn’t even finished 1 beer. Somehow I went from a customer to a target in no time flat, and anyone who knows me knows that I’m not a confrontational person or even one to complain. I am more inclined to speak out on the positives, but I can’t in good conscious suggest that anybody go to Mr. Ricks. Unless you are open to the possibility of leaving in tears. I beg everyone to skip this place due to the horrible service and inability to communicate with customers. If anyone is thinking about coming here, but having second thoughts: message me! I would be more than happy to suggest an alternative where you will be on the receiving end of some EXCELLENT customer service.

Some of the worst cocktails I’ve ever had, staff are unfriendly and it’s a great spot to get into a bar fight on the weekend. Only thing going for the place is the amazing view of Avila’s main beach. Need another good bar in town so this spot isn’t the only place to go!

Really bummed out with my experience. Yesterday I was so excited to go have fish and chips here. When I got my order, the fish was so chewy I thought I was eating a tire. We let the bartender know. He was understanding and offered us another option off the menu. But I went with the fish and chips again thinking it could have been over done the first time. Nope same thing. Bummer town. The other problem I had was the trash all over the floor and the staffs attitude about it. The outside bouncer was walking by and stopped to ask me if I needed something. I said, no I’m just looking at the trash all over the floor. His response was, oh yeah, well you know, it happens. And then walked away. Really? How about picking it up? It looks bad. I can handle bad food. Every place has hit or miss food sometime. But to have a staff that just does not care and have a oh well attitude, nope.

I’m surprised at all the bad reviews here. Friends and I came on a Friday night during Farmer’s Market, and it was PACKED. Standing room only — packed. This place is obviously a no bullshit place: follow the rules or get out. Took about 10 minutes to wait in line for a couple beers and a cocktail from when I got in line to finish. The bartender was slammed, and mixed up our order of chicken nachos to beef nachos. No problem, but when I asked a manager-looking employee if the mix-up could be fixed, he kind of looked at me like I was stupid. To be honest, I felt kinda stupid after standing there for 5 minutes with no response. I told the group I was with to just deal with the beef. An older gentleman in front of me ordered two lemon drops and a martini. The bartender obliged and busted the drinks out, but don’t be that guy

Bless me Father for I have sinned. It’s been 9 months since my last visit to Mr. Ricks! Yes, my wife and I were in terrible need of «hospitality therepy» and knew just where to go! Absolutely gorgeous day, easy parking, AND a coveted table on the patio where we enjoyed delicious bloody Mary’s, fish tacos, onion rings and nachos. The staff was friendly and helpful as per usual. Long story short, we spent eight hours chatting with people and enjoying the relaxing good times at Mr. Ricks! Thank you folks!

We have been at Mr. Rick’s for the Super Bowl three out of the last four years(and many other times in between). We have never had a bad experience. It’s always a good time. Today we had our first experience with less than great food. I took my plate to the bartender and pointed out the raw batter on my Calamari. He apologized and quickly came back with a new plate of perfectly cooked Calamari. Glad it was handled quickly and with no problems. Not disappointed. Thanks Mr. Rick’s for being a dependably good time. See you next year for the Super Bowl, if not sooner.

I went here with my sister and a few of her girlfriends when I was visiting slo. We came here after a long hike to enjoy the Avila beach sunset and have some drinks, and this place accomplished just that. Mr. Ricks is not a place to come for a nice meal on the beach but more of a casual divey bar to enjoy a beer with friends to chat and enjoy the sunset. We ordered 2 orders of nachos. One with chicken and one without. Delicious and just what we needed.

This place had the saddest employees. The only time they seem to enjoy themselves was when they were talking to each other. We felt like a bother to them. We ate at Mr Rick on January 13, 2016.

This place is the worst restaurant I have ever been to. We ordered the Cobb salad, hot dog, blood mary and Figueroa IIPA. The Cobb salad wasn’t even made with the correct ingredients(cauliflower, zucchini, black olive, broccoli) and the chicken was definitely canned, and looked liked cheap tuna. The salad was just gross and inedible. The hot dog was gross too, and came with like 6 French fries. My beer was flat too. For a 40 dollar meal, it was just terrible. The Bloody Mary was made with a cheap mix and sucked too. Everything was overpriced and the customer service was terrible. I feel sick from eating the hot dog there too. Go somewhere else

Im at a beach bar surounded by tropical décor and they are playing depressing country music. The people at the bar look depressed and the music just adds to the atmosphere. Been here before and never seen it like this. Beer is good food is good, music BAD.

Just left Mr. Ricks and was thoroughly disappointed. My wife and I went to Avila this afternoon so I could take part in the Polar Bear Plunge. What a great experience. Afterwards we went to Mr. Ricks for some food and drinks. Before ordering our food my Wife asked if they had coffee. She was told No. After ordering our food and a drink for her, I wanted to double check and went inside to ask one of the bartenders. Do you serve coffee? No! So I decided to head down the street to pick up a cup of Coffee from Jo Mamma’s Coffee. Once I got back to Mr. Ricks, I was told by the very rude«bouncer» that I had to have shoes on and that I could not bring my coffee on to the patio where my wife and food was waiting for me. I explained that my shoes were under the table where I left them, pointed at them and he seemed to be a little disappointed about that one. Then I explained to him that I was the DD and just wanted some coffee to warm up after the Polar Bear Plunge and that we had asked twice if they sold coffee. I told him I could understand not allowing me to bring in coffee if they sold coffee(which they should) but they don’t. Plus we had ordered food and other drinks, so it wasn’t like I was trying to get away with anything. Nope. He was not having any of it. My wife then went to complain and was told that I could have purchased coffee at the Custom House. Well, I would have if that had been presented as an option. But it wasn’t. And wouldn’t that also be «outside food or drink». Yes, same owners, but you get my point! On top of that, when they brought the food out my wife asked for some Catchup and was told she could go get it herself. Needless to say we left one of our smallest tips ever and won’t be going back there. They used to have better customer service. Maybe the financial drain of Wooly’s and Alex’s has trickled down and impacted employee morale?

I paid $ 17 for a beer and vodka and cranberry. The doorman was a huge dick, young blonde kid with a baby face. He was so rude and forceful with everyone. I watched him almost get into a fight with a customer for accidentally crossing the line. Then ripped a drink out of another persons hands. Mr ricks full patio cleared out by 730 pm because everyone was talking about how rude the kids was.

One of the places where you can find seating on a busy Saturday at Avila Beach. The food and drinks are good. Though the inside seating does not give a view of the beach, the outer seating does. There’s tv and music too. The service is good, the food is good and you can get your drinks made strong(the best part ;)) If you want to just go out there and chill, this is a good place to be!

We came here looking for a drink and a chance to enjoy the view. Mr. Rick’s did not disappoint. We visited during happy hour(6 on a Tuesday) which was a pleasant surprise. I ordered a Tom Collins. The bartender I ordered from quickly asked another how to make it. It came out great and no harm no foul. Later when I got another he checked that gin was okay. Sweet, but I wasn’t looking for a Vodka Collins. My brother enjoyed a Sierra Nevada pale ale and my mom got a margarita on the rocks. She liked it. We ordered a plate of the garlic fries to nibble on. They were excellent. The fries were not too mushy not to brunt. The garlic seasoning gave it a little extra something. This place had great drinks, a great view. Definitely would be happy to return on my next trip to Avila.

I came here to karaōke, only to find they no longer do it. Down but not defeated, I decided on a nightcap, a bit of writing, and bed instead. Turns out, that was actually really good idea. Sitting down with my trusty laptop, I ordered a Pear Royale and went to work. Apparently, this place has creativity in the air, because I’ve never got more done in such a short amount of time. And it wasn’t just filler drivel — it was good! Coincidence, maybe, but that doesn’t change the fact that they mix up a damn good drink here. The music’s good, too. If you’re not a writer, just grab a Mai Tai or beer and watch the sun set. It’s good stuff!
