This little spot in the Haberfelde building will not disappoint. The menu and sandwiches are accurately described; no phony hype. Very tasty and good quality ingredients. As others have noted, Ryan takes your order, immediately remembers your name(no matter how infrequently you stop in) and gives you great service. She and her crew are awesome

Excellent food. Quick, personal service. Clean, cool, and close to the courthouse. Enjoyed this break from jury duty. Inexpensive, access from both 17th Street and 18th street but can be hard to find at first. The lady at the counter makes every guest feel as tho they are the only one who matters. Loved it!

I’m from San Francisco, and I’m mentioning it because SF is brimming with sandwich shops. I have probably eaten more sandwiches than I have eaten any other street food(some people are burrito people, I am a sandwich guy). The reason I’m mentioning all of this is that I didn’t expect to find such a high quality lunch in Bakersfield. The owners of Sandwich Shack made me feel the type of welcome that I typically only experience when visiting loving relatives. The welcome was followed by a delicious(italicize delicious in your mind) hamburger and an equally tasty, Hawaiian-inspired, turkey, pineapple, and jalapeño sandwich. The burger came with fries, and everything came fresh and prepared with care. Sandwich Shack isn’t trying to impress you with mile-high stacks of meat, or rare and exotic ingredients. Instead, Sandwich Shack gives you an uncommon level of quality and care. I will be visiting this place every time I pass through Bakersfield.

This past week I was selected for jury duty(yay!) and did not want to walk too far in the hot and humid weather. After a Unilocal search I came across the Sandwich Shack that was at least ½ mile away… and I am glad I did! It took me as few minutes to locate the Sandwich Shack which is located inside the Haberfelde building.(Side story: I actually walked past this building twice gave up, c walked to Sequoia, saw the l8ne, and walked back to try and locat the Sandwich Shack one last time). I ordered the teriyaki chicken bowl and it did not disappoint. The vegetables are crispy and there is enough rice to accommodate every piece of chicken. My entire meal was less than $ 10. Score! The burgers that they have looked delicious too. The owner, Ryann, is a sweetheart! She knows her customers by name and takes an interest in their lives! Can’t wait to go back and try something else off her menu!

Ate lunch here today and ordered a turkey sandwich. It was really big and really good. My sandwich was done really quick and customer service was great. I definitely will be back.

Little, honest real food by a local family! Sandwich Shack is my favourite little go to place downtown. Nothing fancy(although my son RAVES about the tri-tip nachos, which are only available on Thursdays). Ryan is quick to learn and remember your name and will make you feel like a long-term friend. No meat breakfast burrito was today’s choice and was packed solid with potatoes, scrambled eggs and cheese. It was filling but not a ridiculous behemoth that would make me want to sleep it off under my desk. The veggie spring rolls are a tasty little fried treat in the afternoons.

I came here intending to try their fries and tuna sandwich(since Unilocalers were bragging about it) but the smells from the grill had me reconsidering. After waffling for about 10 minutes, I finally decided on a cheeseburger and fries. What a waste of 10 minutes. The burger was a premade patty that had no flavor. The lettuce was soggy although the burger was dry. So disappointed. I thought their fries were pretty decent but nothing too great. It tastes like they use Lawry’s seasoning with sugar on their fries. I might consider reviewing again just to be fair. Maybe I caught them on an off day.

Great service, delicious tuna sandwich with walnuts and squaw bread! French fries are yummy! Plenty of seating and great variety on their menu.

The upside of being stuck on a jury was getting to explore lunch options in downtown Bakersfield. My friend promised me that if I met her at her office she’d take me across the street to a hidden treasure that I could review; BOY did she deliver! We walked across the street to the Haberfelde Building and discovered the Sandwich Shack inside. Now, I say it’s inside(well, because it is) but it just doesn’t FEEL like you’re inside a building. It feels like you’re outside in a shady courtyard with plants and latticework shady coverings. The windows of the adjacent businesses have awnings, adding to the outdoorsy feel. Katie leads me over to the sandwich shop where the woman working the register addresses her by first name. Yes, she comes here QUITE often. She laughing jokes«Tell her what I’m going to order.» and the woman smiles and says«Chicken Teriyaki bowl, no veggies» Katie then eggs her on «What am I going to drink?» Even I know the answer to that one«Diet Dr. Pepper» the friendly lady answers. So I order the same, only I actually LIKE veggies and get them, too. This is definitely IMHO the best chicken teriyaki bowl that I have had in town. The chicken was tender and found in abundance, the veggies were steamed crisply but not wilting, and the proportion of topping to rice was spot on. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch at one of the the little tables over the hardwood floor and under the evergreen leaves of a fake plant. Not exactly Michelin star dining, but a very satisfying lunch for a reasonable price. I hope NOT to get stuck on another jury, but I’m looking forward to coming back to the Sandwich Shack just the same.

A decent little sandwich place. the daily specials are pretty cool. Does breakfast form 8to 11 and after that its lunch and dinner till closing. Their breakfast burrito is pretty good and nicely filling. I plan to go back later to try the french dip!

I’ve been eating here for a couple of years when I’m downtown. It’s a little hidden in the Haberfeld Building but worth the effort to find. The food is great and very reasonably priced. Ryan welcomes everyone, and knows almost everybody by name. Quality burgers at fast food prices, plus lots of other(healthier) choices. Give it a try.

I love the sandwich shack! And not just because I work in the Haberfelde but because it reminds me of home cooking versus greasy fast food. Rhian and her husband run the joint and everything they make is fresh and yummy! Try her homemade potato salad! Its the best!
