I walked in for a sandwich, ended up leaving with 5lbs of chicken and a sandwich! lol I had a pastrami sandwich that was awwwwesome! It even had bacon! I’m glad I work down the street. Definitely worth stopping by for a sandwich and taking a look at what they have to offer, they have alot. You might walk out with some nice cuts of meat or even a unique flavor of ice cream: D That’s what I have my eyes on for my next trip to this deli

Underwhelming. I wanted to love this place like I did the deli at Fike’s in the good old days. I ordered the turkey avocado sandwich. It was just a flat, boring sandwich. Totally uninteresting. For $ 9 I was hoping for something super good. I think the pre-packaged sandwiches at Vons deli are roughly the same. And they even come with a pickle for half the price. Meh.

I bought one of the most delicious New York steaks from Big Poppy’s today! I encourage you to stop in for your next bbq, especially if you are a downtowner. Support this local deli/butcher shop/market. The potato salad is amazing, too! Thanks, Big Poppy!

I love this place! The owners are fantastic and always super friendly. The sandwiches are awesome and I highly recommend the chicken salad sandwich, it competes for one of the best in bakersfield. Their burgers are good, I prefer mine medium well and they always get it spot on. Never a disappointment!

Saw the BBQ sign on the corner and thought I’d check it out. Very cool little spot. I bought the rib plate. It came with potato salad, beans, ribs and a super soft yummy dinner roll. Let’s say this first… I was impressed by the potato salad. it was even yellow! The beans… can you say YUM? they had ground beef in the… NEED I SAYMORE! The ribs are maybe baby back size but SUPER meaty and filling. VERY well seasoned. I honestly didn’t need sauce(which was on the side). That’s a good sign! Next time I’m in Bakersfield, I’d come here again!

I was waking along F st with an extreme sense of hunger and no idea what to get. And suddenly I received an invitation from the most sensational aroma of a BBQ piit. I was instantly hooked and B lined straight to the door. I walked up to the counter and asked for whatever is grilling outside(tri-tip plate, country beans, potato salad w bits of glorious bacon. And a roll. First thing I noticed was that this place had turned into a little market. Before I proceeded with Payin, I decided to peruse through the selection of interesting culinary finds. Jams, jellys, rubs, dressings, spices and oils. Also displayed a decent array of meats. My meal came as I was finishing my sightseeing. And first thing I taste for before adding and salsa or BBQ sauce, is the Tri-tip. And it definitely had that smoky BBQ flavor and a nice notes of herbs and spices. Thumbs up !! Beans were ok. Potato salad was good until I got those bits of bacon. Then it was amazing. Two thumbs way up. All in all there was nothing left on the plate when I was finished. And i was happy. Well done Big Poppy. Nice to see you’re back.

Not only a deli but now a market! And a cute market. I still gave 5 stars but I wish they had some grass feed and organic meat choices there. Kudos for doing their own butchering, though! They have a meat counter, some produce and dairy, then artisan convenience foods and condiments. Local honey, nuts. And open till 7!

I remember visiting Big Popy’s when they opened several years back. And they were good — really good! Combined with moving across town, and simply forgetting it was here, I went some time without returning. I came back at lunch, half expecting a huge crowd like before. There was only one other table of patrons. I walked up to the front and checked out the menu. It seemed smaller than I remember. I ordered a turkey melt, and for the price, thought that would be all I needed. Boy, was I wrong. The sandwich came out on the smallest bread I’ve ever seen. Tea sandwiches looked like hoagies to this miniscule tidbit. I stared at the empty plate and reminded myself of that diet I never started. Well, I guess now is as good of a time as any! It really was a tasty sandwich, it just left me wanting more! Just a bit larger, maybe even a pickle on the side, would have made it seem worth the price. As my lunch companion and I were leaving, we noticed a sign being put up indicating they were closing for a short while. I’m not sure what the reason is, but I bet that midget sandwich had something to do with it.

I ordered a turkey avocado sandwich and it was pretty tasty. Only problem the sandwich is very small. No bigger then one you would make at home. If im paying $ 895 for a sandwich then I should be full. Im a big guy so I could have easily had 2. The service was good and the deli looked clean so I will try to go back but for a huge burger this time.

A while back I tried a salad and was very disappointed. The lettuce did not fill the bottom of the container and it was expensive. Today, I thought I would give them another try. I ordered a half Stacy’s sandwich and salad to go. When I got back to my office and pulled out my sandwich, all I saw was two slices of bread with lettuce. I opened the sandwich, there was only chicken salad in the middle of the bread and not enough to spread out and cover the half slice of bread. The salad was okay, if you like freesia lettuce only. The chipotle dressing was good.

The service was downright awful. We came in with a larger group during a conference break(around 13 people), and some of us waited at least an hour for our food. The server forgot certain order and had to go back to the kitchen to alert the cook. The food was okay, but the wait was the worst I’ve ever experienced. Some of us finished a good half hour before others even had their food in front of them. We will most definitely not be going back.

Big Popy’s was a neat looking, hidden deli in downtown. The inside is clean and interesting. I was happy to be able to choose from a variety of specialty bottled sodas. The Souix City Sasparilla is a must-try for any root beer fan. I ordered the cheeseburger and fries. The cheeseburger was advertised as a ½ lb angus certified patty, and it was large. Came with a chipotle-mayo-ketchup house sauce that tasted good. The ½ lb patty, however, was over an inch thick and was cooked well-done. Any hamburger patty that isn’t fast-food thin should not be cooked well done unless specified, and I definitely did not ask for this. I ate about half of this giant over-cooked hamburger steak before I couldn’t stand anymore. Other than that, the house sauce and vegetables were nice, as well as the ciabatta bun. This place is neat and I may stop back for a different sandwich, but I would not recommend the burger to anyone.

I’m rooting for this local gem! Not super well-known, but the military/old wartime deco is cute. They have old school bottled soda pop, plus the food is delish. Chicken salad sammich is popular, & the Cobb salad is my fave — with Italian dressing.

My portabella sandwich was cold!!! The people were so unfriendly that the hubby and I were extremely uncomfortable. The dining room has one too many chairs. And the potatoes in the loaded baked potato salad weren’t even cooked all the way. And at these prices, not on the list of trying again. Sorry guys… sometimes the first impression is all it takes.

Had the Spicy Italian and a cup of potato soup. The sandwich was small and funky tasting. Good, but not great. The soup was great. Very creamy. I thought the sandwich was small and over priced(7.75) for the taste. I, like others, would prefer Union Station, Substation, or my favorite in Bako, Subs soups and Greens. They have a nice décor. Cool music and friendly service which bumped it up to a 3 star. The sandwich was a 2 star and they charge $ 0.50 for water!!! That’s wrong. I was Very close to posting a 2 star, but you need to include place and service. Staff was very friendly.

Big Popy’s is my absolute favorite dining spot downtown. I eat there or have it delivered at least once a week! The Pasta Pesto is my all time favorite food. The BLAT is always a top favorite too! The wonderful service and atmosphere only add to the great food. It is a bit pricey but well worth it!

I love sandwiches! I am normally able to locate the best place in any given city or county and in Bakersfield it is definitely Big Popy’s! They are so good they are able to survive working early hours and the place is always packed. Good variety of sandwiches and this place goes way beyond what you would normally see at a deli. I like the food and the kind staff. Keep up the good work and I will continue to eat here!
