We all know that In-N-Out is what a hamburger is all about, and all Southern Californians really do love In-N-Out burgers. We constantly pit their quality and taste against any new burger chain that pops up, or even threatens to invade our In-N-Out Burger territory. Back in 1948, THIS is where the magic happened. Where that first spark of burger greatness was first unleashed from its bottle. This is part of Californian history right here. Now, sixty seven years later, this area is In-N-Out HQ. Nearby are all the facilities that make the 300+ stores in five states run smoothly. Just drive down Hamburger lane a bit and see all of their buildings, warehouses, trucks and fuel depots. I pulled into their parking lot around 2 in the afternoon, and it was very crowded. Cars lined up at the drive through, and I had to settle for a spot that made me a little bit uncomfortable with the nearby cars. As I made my way to the restaurant, I noticed that there was actually a second In-N-Out building within this parking lot. There is an In-N-Out store here. I decided to check it out before getting my meal. The store has all of their trademarked items, and a wide variety of items to buy. A vast assortment of cups, containers, postcards, magnets, blankets, shirts, and I even saw an In-N-Out bikini hanging. If you want something that touts your favorite burger chain, you can probably buy it here. I picked up some refrigerator magnets along with a postcard, and I walked over towards the restaurant. I opened the door to a whoosh of air conditioning above me. The place was crowded, and full of people ordering, and eating. Although the smiling cashiers got the line taken care of quickly, and I barely had to wait at all before I was face to face with a smiling young thing. I barely had to look at their small menu as I ordered my standard double-double meal. No thank you, no grilled onions on that. I took my cup and receipt and walked into the dining area to find a table. I found an empty table by the window, and I looked out over the drive through and towards the adjacent businesses nearby. I felt bad for the other restaurants nearby. I can’t imagine they’d get much traffic with this place right here. I waited for a little bit and heard my number called. I walked up to the counter and picked up my burger and took a moment to revel in the here and now. THIS exact location has been serving THIS exact burger for nearly SEVENTY years. How many millions of people had been sitting right where I was, enjoying the very same burger I had right now in my hands? Its an downright amazing thought. After savoring the moment for a time, I took the Unilocal photo before biting into the burger. As I looked around, I saw people of all ages enjoying their food. Small children, teenagers, adults and elderly people were all in here. I enjoyed my burger and wondered at the historical significance of the place. As always, the burger was as high a quality as I’ve come to expect from an In-N-Out. All of the people working have a smile on their face. Even the people taking out the trash. It’s nice. It’s a good restaurant, and I’m really glad I could visit Store 001. In-N-Out is a Southern California Cultural Icon, and it all started right here. After my delicious burger, I went to wash my hands. I was so wrapped up in the moment that I accidentally went into the women’s restroom to wash my hands. Thankfully, it was empty, and I only realized my grave error after I was drying my hands. On a side note, the women’s restroom was sparkling clean! Also… oops. It’s In-N-Out, of course there’s gonna be a long wait during peak hours. The people are extremely nice and the inside is fairly new, clean, big, and nice. One of my favorite in n outs, plus it’s #1, it all began here.

As part of employee appreciation week, my employer hired the In-N-Out Truck to come and cook us some burgers. The set up was pretty slick and EVERYBODY was smiling as their faces were covered in burger juice. Good times
