Everyone rates Baltimore establishments based on the crab cakes. For the most party every restaurant in Baltimore has figured out the crab. Michener’s has been nearly my sole food source all week as I’m trapped her for business. They’re catering our breakfast and lunch. In addition, I’ve had dinner here a few nights this week. The food is hit or miss. The restaurant food is generally good. Unfortunately, the catering is terrible. Some days, we have nearly gone hungry because there was nothing good to eat. I blame it on the catering selection. They will go from a well balanced buffet one day of starches, proteins, vegetables and salad to a menu with four meat proteins and that’s about it. Additionally they are extremely unaccomodating to vegetarians.

I just dined here this evening and it left so much to be desired. I came in with three other guests and the place was rather empty, yet it still took an eternity for our food. We ordered some appetizers which did come out in a reasonable time frame, as did our salads. However when it came to our entrees, it took an eternity. The wait between our salads and our entrees had to have been at least a half hour(if you’re wondering, we ordered steaks and lamb chops). I ordered my lamb chops medium rare, they came out as medium at best, but I accepted it and ate it anyway — not bad, not great, potatoes were average and the asparagus was overcooked. However both filets that were ordered came out so horribly overdone. They were so terrible that they had to send them back to the kitchen. Our server felt terrible and was very apologetic. We tried to tell her it wasn’t her fault, but then she stated that it does affect her via tips. It seemed clear to me that this was not the first time that food came out badly. When they finally came out with replacement steaks(mind you another half hour later), they still were badly overcooked, and still looked terrible. I felt terrible for my friends. I will note that they were nice enough to bring me a free birthday dessert, which is always appreciated. A chocolate lava cake with whipped cream and strawberries. The lava cake, although would fill a chocolate craving was nothing spectacular, and very average. Our server was also nice enough to give the other guests a free dessert as well, but it really could not save the terribleness of the dinner overall. The brownie ice cream dessert and the apple pie were both better desserts overall, but again not worth the trip. The one star goes to our server who did go out of her way.

Yes, it’s in the Four Points Sheraton. Yes, it’s at BWI. And yes, it has amazing, jumbo, expertly broiled, tender, baseball-shaped crab cakes. Mmmmmmm.
