A cool place with decent breads and sweet treats, We only stopped a few times before leaving the city, and we preferred Bonaparte’s in Fells Point for killer, gluten-rich baguettes and deliciously decadent deserts, like their chocolate raspberry cakes and fruit tarts. But the New System has neat stuff, esp. when you buy it fresh and piping hot from the oven.

Currently my favorite bakery in town. I make up excuses to go to Falkenhan’s Hardware across the street(«Honey, don’t you think the faucet is leaking?») so I can duck in and grab half a dozen donuts. The best is definitely the marshmallow filled. It’s like eating a cloud. If eating a cloud was really, really good. Second best: the raisin roll that is baked, then coated(fried?) in butter, cinnamon, and sugar, and THEN slathered with fudge. Not chocolate icing, but Berger-cookie style fudge. Bring friends to help. And your health insurance card. I get a kick out of the fact that the place is family-owned for several generations, and the recipes have been passed down, not pulled from the Cisco catalog. In other words, your grandparents might have split one of those cinnamon raisin monsters. Straightforward blue-collar coffee, and good sandwiches. I haven’t tried the bread by the loaf.

This is my second favorite place to grab a donut. They also have fairly decent cupcakes. The donuts are the yummy, raised, honey dipped variety. It is everything an American bakery should be; simple, sugary, and inexpensive. The staff here is very friendly and will recommend their favorite treats. Well worth it!

We lived for a year in Cambridge, MA, the land of what my husband calls the«no-sugar, wheat-flour-only aesthetic» bakery. I have to admit I love wheat bread, barely-sweet scones and chocolate cake so dark it’s bitter(check out the Hi-Rise Bakery in Harvard Square for the platonic ideal), but I can see his point. So when we moved back to Baltimore he was overjoyed to find New System Bakery down the street from our new house. Sugar is their main ingredient. In the baked goods, and slathered on the top of everything for good measure. Best of all, breakfast for us and the 2 kids — $ 6 here — would have been $ 20 in Cambridge, easily. But we’ve cooled off on the place now that we all suspect that type II diabetes is setting in…

Stop here if you have a few bucks left and need some good food and coffee. Saturday morning I am usually in the mood for a bacon egg and cheese on a fresh croissant. The donuts are melt in your mouth good. Probably not the best thing in the world for you, but damn are they tasty.

The NSB is a general purpose bakery, selling everything from donuts to bread, but the quality varies significantly between products(I’m not a big fan of standard cookie and cake frosting). My favorite is the cinnamon bread — it turns into irresistible french toast. With the new, larger, location comes new treats: breakfast is now served, adding eggs and coffee to the normal assortment of unhealthy morning delights.
