Was treated like family here. Great conversation and good food. This hard working family supports Bastrop Police, EMTs and Firemen! She gives back to her Bastrop community regularly, feeds the homeless herself and even travels twice a year to her Mexican Village to share many donated clothes toys and such with her people living in true poverty!

On the way home from Austin, we were looking for a breakfast place along the way. We typically refuse to eat at chains and always loo for that one place that ‘the locals eat’. Margie’z Place is one of those places in Bastrop. When we pulled up it didn’t look like much from the outside. Inside the service is wonderfully ‘old school’ — we were greeted by a young girl(her granddaughter) and then Margie came to take our order. I had the migas, which were delicious and my husband had the omlete — he love it. You will definitely feel like a member of the family when you stop in for some ‘home-cookin’ from Margie.

I have eaten breakfast at Margie’z place once before. Migas were good and everyone was friendly. Seems like everyone who eats there knows each other. This morning(Sunday) it was a little late for Breakfast so I decided to try them for lunch. I rate a Mexican food place by their cheese enchiladas. So I ordered a plate today. I was served by two very young(elementary school age) young ladies who were as polite or more polite than severs I have had in other places. The enchiladas where exactly how I like them. Not huge portions of food but reasonable. Probably better in moderation. I will be back!!!

This feels like you are eating in a friend’s kitchen. Warm friendly and cozy. Good eats of traditional Tex Mex.

Last Saturday a friend was visiting from Austin, and we were trying to decide what to eat. We had tentatively decided on Green Chai Café since my friend has vegetarian leanings and they have the most vegetarian offerings in town as far as I know, but my friend and husband were both very hungry, so we reconsidered since Green Chai is a one-dude operation and therefore has long waits for the admittedly good food served there. Margie’z, on the other hand, while perhaps not being staffed in the usual way since it is basically a family affair from what I can tell, would put out something for us to nibble on right away(chips and salsa) and hopefully would not have as long of a wait for substantial food. My friend said she was always up for trying a new Mexican food place, so the decision was made. And we didn’t regret it. When we walked in we were the only customers. A teenager and a child of I’d guess 8 or 9 were behind the register. The teenager was on the phone, so when we asked if we could just sit anywhere, the child answered in the affirmative. The teenager came and took our drink orders(we all got iced tea) and brought chips and salsa. Chips were good(light/thin/crispy style) and salsa was okay, a bit watery. The child helped by bringing out our tea. We placed our orders slightly thereafter. A sandwich board outside had alerted us to the fact that there was a cheese enchilada dinner special … $ 5.25 I believe. Turns out that was only 50 cents or less off of the menu price, but either way, a good deal. Anyway, my friend ordered that with refried beans(notice I said she had vegetarian leanings, not that she’s vegetarian, I think black beans which were also an option have a greater chance of being vegetarian). I ordered chicken enchiladas with ranchero sauce, and my husband ordered a big bowl of menudo. My friend also ordered some queso after asking if we’d eat it if she ordered it. Of course! So during the short wait for our entrees we enjoyed a small bowl of good, real queso. We were all happy with our food. The enchiladas were served on normal plates rather than the oval platters one usually gets in Mexican restaurants, but that was okay since the plates were completely filled with enchildas/rice/beans. Everything tasted pretty good to me … I may have wanted a tad more flavor, but could tell I was eating some good home cooking. My friend liked her food as well. My husband enjoyed his menudo, and the spoonful I tried tasted good and clean. All 3 of us enjoyed the homemade flour tortillas brought with our meal. The woman who cooked the meal(I’m assuming she was Margie the matriarch) came out to make sure that we liked our food, which I thought was nice. She seemed happy that we’d brought someone in from out of town to try the place. Cliched, I know, but we did begin to get that part-of-the-family feel. And the fact that the food is very inexpensive doesn’t hurt anything either. We’ll definitely be back for breakfast or lunch soon!
