I’m so disappointed that I’m writing my review at the table. The sushi is here isn’t that great. What are you people so excited about? Let’s start with my appetizers… Fried Gyoza: WAYYYY overdone(see pictures) Sushi Eggroll: Yum, by far the best thing we had, BUT if you hate cilantro then you’re going to have a fun time picking it out. Sushi: I’m not even going to specify because it doesn’t matter. The quality was just okay as in I have tasted better from Calandros grocery. Service was good. We had to ask for refills and it’s not even busy. With all the excellent sushi places in Baton Rouge I’m shocked this place has such good reviews. I didn’t even want to finish my sushi. Sorry guys.

I’ve been a Sushi Yama fan for a while now and yet it’s another one of those places that — for whatever reason — I haven’t sat down to write a review for. I was introduced to this place by a friend who loves it and eats here regularly and then, not long after I made my first visit, I was talking with another friend who spent 17 years of her life in Japan and knows a thing or two about quality Sushi. She said that this place and Ichiban are her top picks in Baton Rouge — with this one being her first choice. So — don’t just take it from me — take it from someone who knows what she is talking about and — if you’re a sushi lover — you need to check this place out. So what makes this place memorable for me? For starters, the food is fantastic. Creative combinations, fresh ingredients, and attractive presentations make for a satisfying meal every time. I’ve had about 20 different rolls here, I suppose, and have loved everyone of them. Some a little more than others! Today I tried the Crunchy Roll, the cucumber salad, and the seaweed salad — delicious as usual. The seaweed salad is fresh, cold, and comes in a generous portion size. The sushi rolls always stand on their own, flavor wise, but come with plenty of ginger and wasabi if you want to play with the flavor and heat intensity a little bit. Secondly, the service is first rate. The wait staff are always friendly, prompt, well-informed about the menu, and are very accommodating. Thirdly, the extras are a nice touch. I’m old enough to remember when«lagniappe» was a regular part of many people’s businesses — and not just restaurants — but all kinds of places. It’s nice that when you sit down here they bring you a nice sampler of their cucumber salad right away and then, at the end of the meal — some fresh, sliced pineapple wedges to balance out the palate with a little sweetness before you depart. These«bookends» make for a nice welcome, and a friendly farewell — and leave you with a good feel about the place — which you would have anyway from eating here. But it’s that little something extra — that sends a strong signal that says they are thinking about their customers. Always a treat to come here…

Hawaiian Salad is the best! Freshest fish and attention to detail. Conscious and accomodating for those with food allergies. Always a great experience and such an asset to the neighborhood. Our fave Friday night spot!

Yesterday, I went here for lunch with a friend. It was around 12:15 and the parking lot was full! So, I’ve had sushi everywhere around the Baton Rouge area. I’m just going to get straight to the point that the prices are way too high and it’s not worth paying so much when you can get something tastier elsewhere. Their rolls actually can cost up to I believe $ 25– $ 30 which really blew my mind. Everything tastes okay/good and the service was great, but we spent over $ 80 on just a few things. Definitely not coming back :(

Wow, just wow. Best Sushi I have ever had, not only in LA but country. Don’t care what the price is, doesn’t matter for the best sushi ever. Owner is an amazing chief and will surprise you with his amazing creations. If your in the area do not miss.

I’m giving this place 3 stars because honestly I have had much more superb sushi at other Baton Rouge establishments. I noticed a lot of people said this is the best sushi in Baton Rouge but honestly I find Sushi Masa, Ichiban, Tsunami, and Geisha with a flair to be better. We got the yaki udon shrimp noodles, they were pretty good, but I would have rather to have a choice of the soba noodles. Yaki Udon noodles are very big and hard to eat. We got the Rock n Roll sushi and the New Orleans roll. The chef did steam the shrimp for us and remove the raw tuna. But the New Orleans roll had so much green wasabi fish eggs on the top I couldn’t stomach it I had to remove the whole top layer. I tried 2 pieces of sushi from each roll and that was all I could manage to get down. I did not care for either roll. The establishment is also very small and cramped inside. The host stand is right in the doorway. I do not think I would come back here because I did not enjoy the food or my experience. I just didn’t care for the quality of the sushi. My intention is not to talk down about this restaurant but only yo give my honest review.

Sushi Yama is by far the BESTSUSHI restaurant in the states! ALWAYSFRESH, as you can tell by the temperature of the restaurant. If ever in Louisiana, you MUST stop by and enjoy the BESTSUSHI Louisiana has to offer! Don’t let that spouse who doesn’t like sushi stop you from going, Sushi Yama even accommodates them! Trust me, everyone leaves with a smile, even the Sushi chefs! Tell them you heard about the review from Washington’s mom

We have tried several sushi places since moving to BR, but have yet to find one we would say was exceptional. Some folks we meet at Dinner Lab suggested we try this place. Touting it as the best sushi place in BR. So when BF needed a place to go for his birthday dinner we decided to try it. After seeing the location, we were more than a bit skeptical. Its a small, unassuming place is a strip mall off Perkins. Entering did not change our mind. Small dining room packed with tables with a tiny 6 seat bar near the restrooms and a sushi bar that can’t seat more than 10. It was very crowded. Which it being a Tuesday night, did intrigue us. Another thing that caught our eye was the specials board. Interesting sounding rolls like Mafia and Silver and other things like White Fish Ceviche sounded interesting. We perused the menu and were a bit disappointed with the Sake selection.(We always get sake with sushi… Is there any other way?) I remembered another Unilocaler writing about the Pineapple Sake, so we went with that. It was served cold and had a definite pineapple flavor. Not too sweet and not to dry. We liked our choice. After talking to our server, we ordered the Mafia Roll, Silver Roll, Sexy Roll and Whitefish Ceviche. The whitefish ceviche was so good. Slivers of fish, with fresh jalapenos and orange slices drizzled with oil. We were equally as pleased with our rolls. Unique flavors and texture combinations in each one that just melt in your mouth. Smokey, spicy, tart, sweet, crunchy. We have eaten a lot of sushi and we both agreed these were not your run of the mill rolls. No basic California roll here. We didn’t even use soy sauce or wasabi. That is a first for me… We ended our meal with Green Tea ice cream and again were surprised. I like green tea ice cream, but this was different. In your face green tea flavor with just a hint of sweet. If I didn’t know better, I would have thought I was chewing on green tea leaves. We left full, satiated and planning our next trip to this place.

For the price and the quality of the sushi(all you can eat for $ 12 lunch and $ 15 dinner — at least those were the prices back when i was living there almost 3 years ago), this is one of the best places you can go for a fantastic sushi meal! Most all you can eat sushi places for that price range only offer rolls — but not this place! This place offers rolls, nigiri, and sashimi! And they don’t make it until you order it! So you don’t have to wonder how long it’s been sitting out! And don’t think that because the price is cheap that the quality is lacking. The fish here is definitely one of the freshest I’ve ever tasted! If you’re down in Baton Rouge, definitely give this place a try!!!

I’ve been told that this restaurant gets it right and I would have to agree. I recently went for my birthday and it was my second time going so we decided to get different rolls than we had the last time. I enjoyed them with my plum wine. I am not a big fan of how the restaurant is laid out, it feels slightly crammed but once you get into your conversation at your table all of that disappears. I’ll go back.

Amazing sushi and hands down the best in the entire state(that’s right all of you from New Orleans!). The Atlantic salmon appetizer is to die for and make sure to allow time for the Chilean sea bass which absolutely melts in your mouth. If you come in during non-peak times highly recommend that you just tell the sushi chefs what you’re in the mood for and have them surprise you. Be sure too to try the pineapple sake!

I really like this place. After coming here 3 times I may be convinced that it’s the best sushi place in Baton Rouge. The rolls are all good, and they’re really generous with the amount of fish they put in each roll. The fish is super fresh and the rolls are creative. The wait staff is really nice and efficient and polite. They do a good job even when the place is packed(it does get packed on the weekends so prepare for that). My husband likes the little details. They give you a cucumber salad when you walk in and pineapple slices when you leave. The atmosphere is kind of open and a bit loud, but it didn’t keep us from enjoying our experience. Definitely try the tiger roll. Epic.

The location will fool you but you must try. There are some interesting rolls on the menu. I found more than two that I like which is rare sometimes due to my picky palate. We ordered the smoked yellowtail appetizer. Well it wasn’t terrible but definitely too smoky for me and my friend. It was like eating smoked pork… too smoky. But no worries we will try a different appetizer next time. We ordered the Sexy Roll and the… oh i forget check out my photo. – but it was packed with a variety of fish. There is Le Crema by the bottle at a reasonable price that we enjoyed. We will be back.

Stunningly good Japanese restaurant, not just the perfectly prepared Sushi & Sashimi but the Teppanyaki dishes & the salads, Service is spectacular, ample parking outside, lots of reviewers speak of the rolls, if that’s what you want so be it, but this restaurant has far far more to offer, Japanese quality Sashimi & sushi only the best cuts of fish & fresh, super fresh. I would give 6 stars if possible

Went here on a whim and based on reviews. Did not disappoint! I’m not even a sushi fan, but goodness! It was good. I had the tiger shrimp for an appetizer and the Rock n’ Roll sushi roll. I think I’ve found something that will be a regular for me. The cucumber/crabmeat salad prior to the meal and pineapple after are nice additions also. Def will be back.

Quality of the sushi was great. I had the Rock and roll & the sexy roll. The rock and roll was much better than the sexy roll. Highly recommend. A bit pricey, but the size and quality of the rolls was decent. The rock and roll was 10 rolls.

This is one of my top 3 Sushi spots in the greater Baton Rouge area. Sushi and other dishes served are always fresh and even on a busy night they are very timely. Good service and always greeted with a smile. A must try would be the Atlantic Salmon dish, this dish will change your life. Compliment your meal with a nice bottle of Pineapple Saki as well!

Some of the best quality sushi the city has to offer. This place was packed from the moment we got there to the moment we left. The shrimp dumplings were delightful, the cucumber salad was a good way to start the meal, the sushi was fresh and plentiful. Overall, great food. We ordered the new orleans roll, spicy tuna roll, and crunchy roll. We finished it all. Delicious.
