The only place I know that sells authentic taiwanese food. It really takes me back. Love this place a lot for their salty soy milk for breakfast. The soup dumplings are decent. Their dishes are also great. Would recommend it to anyone.

This place is SO G O O D! Food taste flavorful, big portions, and fair prices: D I can’t wait to come back! Tip: some dishes comes w free soup, drink it! It’s delicious, not the standard takeout msg soup — it’s actually way more legit haha Tried: * scallion pancake * scallion pancake with beef * pork chops: super moist and flavorful * bees dumplings * stinky tofu * noodles * chicken + rice((this you can skip, a bit dry))

Nan Bei Ho is one of a handful of Taiwanese restaurants in Queens that have undergone as many switches and splits in ownership as a mitotic cell. They used to have another location in Downtown Flushing( ), also affiliated with King 5 Noodle House on Prince St( ) — both of which have since closed. The former merged with another restaurant on Roosevelt Ave to become King’s Café( ), which seems to have also closed recently and been reborn as New Mei Hua( )… at some point, they also shared owners with Elmhurst’s Taiwanese Gourmet( )… I don’t even know. The English names keep changing, loyal fans keep using the same handful of Chinese names, and I’m not nearly old-country enough to keep up. Right. The food is easier to talk about: — The sweet soymilk(甜豆醬) is just store-bought soymilk, reheated — none of the gently grainy richness of the housemade stuff. But it still makes a great dip for Chinese cruller(油條): theirs was not bad, but would’ve been better if ordered freshly fried early in the morning. — The fried pancake omelette roll(蛋餅) and scallion pancake beef roll(牛肉捲餅) were both pretty large, with extremely tender sliced beef and a nice touch of hoisin sauce. But the scallion pancakes themselves were heavy/soggy and not flaky enough. — The oyster pancake(o-a-jian, because not even Chinese people use the Chinese language to refer to this purely Taiwanese dish) was fine, nothing exciting. It was served over wilted spinach instead of Taiwanese«A» cai, which is unusual. — The sliced beef with hot peppers(小椒牛) is made with very thinly sliced green pepper — a nice bit of heat, but not much. It didn’t have the wok flavor of a great version of this dish. — The beef noodle soup(牛肉麵) didn’t have any Taiwanese beef noodle soup flavor at all(where is the anise?)! That said, the broth had a very rich, pure beef flavor. The noodles looked hand-pulled with different widths, but didn’t have the springiness of handmade noodles. The bowl was topped with a generous amount of very tender beef. — We had originally ordered eel noodles(鱔魚麵), a very classic dish from Taiwan’s historic capital, but they were out of eel. I have no idea where else to get this dish in this city! We came here because my Taiwanese 媽咪 declared that Unilocal’s beloved Mama Lee( ) a block away was just modern fusion stuff, not«true» Taiwanese food. But she seemed as underwhelmed as I was with Nan Bei Ho. Prices were very reasonable though. I see myself returning for the Taiwanese breakfast, and probably only because the parking situation is pretty kind. For dessert, don’t miss Joe’s Sicilian Bakery( ) a few steps away.

Went for lunch with my daughter. We ordered the shredded pork and mustard green noodle soup which was delicious! We also had the large sesame pancake which the waitress said takes 14 minutes(but it was more like 20 – 25) but worth the wait. We were hungry so the soup was sucked down pretty quickly. The soup had great flavor and my daughter wanted to drink the soup when she was done. The star of the show was the sesame pancake which is a bargain at 6.95 because it was about 7 inch in diameter which they cut into 8 pieces. The pancake, more like bread was steaming, coated in sesame which added a great crunch. The steamy soft inside was full of scallions and the right amount of salt to make it deliciously savory. We were not able to finish it so we packed up the leftovers and can’t wait to toast it up for breakfast. I will definitely come back with more people to sample more of the menu.

I visited Nan Bei Ho for lunch, and I’m glad I looked past their NYC B Sanitary Grade Rating to go in and try their food, which I enjoyed. I got the seafood over rice dish with soup, which filled me up and was a great deal for $ 7. Also, even though I went past 3pm, the server was kind enough to let me have an item off the breakfast menu: a cold version of the soybean milk. The soy taste was powerful and distinct, and not subtle or diluted like it is in U.S. produced soy milks, like Silk’s(from grocery stores). I felt surprised that I was the only customer in the restaurant. Maybe people go there for dinner more than for lunch. Also, I liked that decorations(such as the Chinese spelling of «Nan Bei Ho» sprawled n the wall) made this space feel classy, because without them, the restaurant interior would’ve looked boring and uninviting with only the bright red tables, white walls, and black seats. I had a positive lunch experience here and would come back again to try some of their other food options.

Very very disappointing, we’ve been looking forward to trying here for a long time as it’s the only sit down Taiwanese restaurant near us, maybe it’s the dishes we tried(like most Chinese restaurant it’s a big menu) but the food is completely sub par that we didn’t finish most of it(forgot to take a picture) We ordered the following Sliced seaweed appetizer(it’s fine) Stinky tofu(very good) Taiwanese popcorn chicken(horrible, blend and flavorless, we barely touched it, a complete insult to the name) Shrimp and walnut(small shrimps with a lot of batter and mushy inside, we only ate 80% of it) Spicy beef noodle soup(horrible, horrible, flavorless soup, the soup literally taste like hot oil and water) and the waitress explained and admired to the reason why below) The braised beef rice(fine) We left 19% tip since it’s not the waitstaffs fault for the sub par food. However our waitress explained that after speaking to the chef they determined and agreed that the beef noodle soup was very diluted and lack of flavor because when they dumped in the the hu fan(excuse my bad spelling but it’s the broad rice noodle) the water used to boil the noodles diluted the soup. I appreciate the explanation but if you agree you screwed up and botched my order(by accidentally diluting it) doesn’t it call for an apology, a refund or even a credit? Something at least! But none was offered

It’s not easy finding good Taiwanese food outside of Flushing, but this place definitely delivered. This is a regular spot for my friends and I when we don’t want to deal with the crowds of flushing.

This is our goto restaurant for authentic Taiwanese breakfast. Yes, service is a wild card; we’ve had great service and we’ve had mediocre service but never terrible service. There is metered street parking in front as well as residential parking a few streets over. Parking has never been an issue for us. We’ve come on weekday and weekend mornings for breakfast, as well as bought breakfast to go. The xiaolongbaos are eh — adequate for these parts but not spectacular. I love the potstickers 開口鍋貼 as they are freshly made with handmade skins. The rice rolls 飯糰, shaobing 燒餅, egg scallion pancake 蛋餅, chives bun 韭菜盒子, beef scallion pancake 牛肉夾餅 are all fantastic. We’ve also had their beef noodle soup 牛肉麵 and pork chop noodle 排骨麵 which taste pretty authentic as well. I give this place a solid 4 stars based on their food and the fact that there’s nothing close to it in the area.

i remember going to nan bei ho when it was located in flushing as a kid. my parents used to take me often. being taiwanese myself, i have to say i was not pleased with their food at all. my boyfriend and i ordered take out and i was pretty disappointed. first of all, this is a taiwanese establishment. the person who answered the phone when i called for pick up was clearly not taiwanese. she didnt even understand some of the items i was trying to order so she started to get loud claiming she couldnt«hear» me. if you own a taiwanse resturant, i would think the owner should hire some taiwanese people or at least people who would understand what the customer is ordering. i told her that i wanted to speak with the manager; she said the manager wasnt there which i later found out she lied about because when i went to pick up the food, the manger was there. the food was very bland. for example, we ordered da lu mian. that is a CLASSIC taiwanese dish and ive had it from numerous places in flushing. HIGHLY disappointed! ordered the chicken roll. super dry and it DIDNOT come with the REDSAUCE! omg how do they serve this without red sauce?! beats me. the only reason they’re getting 2 stars from me is, 1. we ordered a mango slush and pineapple slush. REALLY good and it as made with fresh fruit. overpriced but maybe if im in the area and craving a slush, ill get it from there. 2. the manager was very nice and apologized for the previous incident with the person who took my order.

To be completely objective I will list out what had happened and you determine for yourself 10:50 A.M. called in order 11:10 A.M. arrived to pick up order(order #48) 11:45 A.M. still waiting for order 11:50 A.M. told me that 3⁄5 things I ordered is sold out and that the 4th item that I ordered is available but since I ordered two of them she is going to give that 4th item to order #59 that ordered only one of the 4th item(who ordered 30 minutes after me) — WHATLOGICISTHAT?! Completely rude and irrational! They obviously did not prepare my order until they I physically arrived– WHYTAKEPHONEORDERSTHAN?! WHYMAKESOMEONEWAITANHOURTOTELLTHEMTHEYARESOLDOUT?! HORRIBLESERVICE

I came here on a Friday. According to the store posters, they open at 11. I got there at exactly 11:27. Walked in, to the left was the cashier who seemed like she was on the phone with Verizon arguing about the phone bill. She didn’t greet us or smile, her name is Alice. We stood there for 2 minutes then we decided to sit down at a table. As we walk to the tables, the floor is mildly sticky and the stank of grease of a restaurant is almost unforgettable. The tables, of course was sticky as well. The dinning room lights were off so we were just sitting in the dark. For a couple of minutes of course. Then a lady in a pink shirt(waitress)? Came over and bought us a kettle of tea. And finally the menu. It was already starting to feel uncomfortable because we felt utterly unwelcome. We ordered 豆漿which in translation comes to be soy milk. In actuality, when it came, it was like mushed up tofu. There was I soy milk in sight. I then ask the waitress and she told me this is how they serve it. When I asked her to change it to actual soy milk, she complained and told me I’d have to pay for this one as well if she were to bring me another one. Our fried squid came. It was really really good. It was Salt and pepper with a bit of fried garlic. It was light just as expected and how I remembered it. We also got a stinky tofu. I’ve had a lot of stinky tofu in my time and this was nothing special. It tasted like stinky tofu but surely, nothing was phenomenal about this particular one. When all is done, I requested for the check by waiting and then finally saying«excuse me» and no one came for the longest time. It was finally when I got up to walk to the kitchen door did someone come out and asked me what I wanted. It was a terrible experience and I would probably never go back again unless absolutely necessary. Also, we were eating in silence while listening to the chefs fighting in the kitchen. Little did we know, as we were leaving, another couple came in, and that’s when they finally decided to turn the music on. So disappointed because this is one of the only Taiwanese restaurants in the bayside area. Sometimes it makes me think, it’s no wonder their flushing branch has closed down years ago.

Honestly not very impressed with the place. Food was kind of tasteless. The price was good. We ordered two lunch combos that came with soup and white rice. And two appetizers. The bill came to a total of $ 26 which is pretty reasonable I guess. The dumplings and the scallion pancakes were probably my favorite. Our actual entrees were ok.

I have been searching high and low for a good bowl of beef stew noodle soup. Looks like I finally stumbled upon a solid option. Most of my favorites are on the menu: scallion pancake beef roll, chive box, beef stew noodle soup, soup dumplings. I will be back

I I went here one day by myself on my day off after reading good Unilocal reviews. The menu looks cool with some items I wanted to try to figured I’d take some stuff to read and hang out and order some new stuff, and bring the leftovers back home for my girlfriend. First of all its kinda dirty… Definitely not maintained or ready to pass a white glove test but it’s a queens Asian restaurant. I get it. The waitress kept trying to talk me out of things bc it was too much or as she said would take too long for me to wait… Then why is it on the menu? I insisted since I wanted to hang out and ordered a sesame scallion bread to bring home and also ordered a scallion pancake roll(beef inside of a scallion pancake) it was cold and un-salted. They never came back to check on me yet I felt rushed the entire time. The part that bothered me the most was when two very dirty chefs came out from the kitchen, leaned against the wall near me and were clearly talking about me in Chinese and looking at me while laughing. I didn’t exaggerate that. I’m sure of what was going on. I ate in a rush and paid. All in all it was cheap, around $ 25 for a lot of food but not a great experience. Won’t be back

Clearly this is a near 4 star establishment. If you’ve had any semblance of good Taiwanese food, you know that this place does it rather well. Service might not be the best and neither is the décor, but if you have me choose between one or the other, I’d take delicious authentic Taiwanese food any time. Here’s the deal: three cup chicken, stinky tofu, bitter melon and salty eggs, and salt and pepper pork chops. Almost forgot, the steamed vegetable dumplings are delicious – the chef has been with NBH for over a decade.

Great food and location to meet up with some old Bayside friends. The parking is plentiful as compared to meeting up in Flushing or Elmhurst. The beef noodle stew soup and Peking Pork Chop is exceptional. I felt a «welcoming» vibe when I entered. I only wish they served the lunch special in the evening cause not every group prefer family style servings I didn’t ask the waitress if we can order the lunch special because the menu States between 11 am to 5 pm and I am a law abiding citizen.

Love the radish cake, beef sesame bread sandwich, and just about everything. The beef noodle soup isn’t on the menu, but ask for it. The oyster pancake was an omelette without the starch for texture. Service tends to get the orders wrong, but I’d come back again!

I come here on a semi-regular basis with my family. It’s pretty decent for Chinese/Taiwanese food. Plenty of street parking which makes it preferable to Flushing. Three things I’d recommend here: 1) Ma-Po Tofu(Sichuan style spicy tofu cubes topped with minced pork) — very flavorful and goes well with rice. I eat spicy so to me it’s not painfully spicy; I’d rate it 3 out of 5. 2) Beef Rolls(sliced beef rolled into scallion pancake, drizzled with char siu sauce) 3) Three Cup Chicken(boned chicken chunks w/basil) — tender and juicy. Some traditional Chinese breakfast items(e.g., pan-fried egg wraps /dumplings) are available throughout the day as well. Level of crowdedness: For dinner I’m usually here on weekends but we’ve never had to wait for seats, or the wait was short enough to slip my memory. I’ve been here for breakfast once on a weekend; came near noon and we didn’t have to wait to be seated. Overall: decent, affordable Chinese food. If you’re health-conscious you can also ask for less salt/oil/sugar, but they don’t always comply so just bewarned for that.

Updated review, I don’t know what happened to this place, but the food quality has gone down. My last few visits have been disappointing. The flavors have not been on point. 3 cups chicken, soup buns and the Shanghainese lo mein just don’t taste the same anymore. I don’t know if they hired a different cook but the wait times to get the food out the kitchen is taking much longer as well. They were at least three instances where they screwed up my take out order. It was either missing a soup or a rice. I hope they can step it up, I don’t want them to go away, but if you keep serving food like this you might lose a lot of customers who will be dining somewhere else.
