So I went to this bar for a friend’s birthday drinks celebration. Although the décor and atmosphere were a lot of fun. It was way way to crowded, so if you are looking for a place we’re you can hang with your friends and chit chat don’t go there after 9:30. We could not even hear the people across from us. But the beer was good so it’s all about what your looking for in a hang out place.

Have been wanting to try this place for a while, so we chose to come here for a celebratory drink on a Friday evening. My first reaction was one of confusion. The décor was from the 70’s but the beer selection was modern and tasteful. If i were to rate this place on drink selection alone, it would get a solid five stars, but the décor and atmosphere are what really bring my rating down. The bartenders and doorman were wonderful and very friendly. They gave us great drink recommendations and were knowledgeable about the many different beers they had available. All in all, I will probably not be returning.

They have a pretty huge beer selection which is great but the one time I went it was insanely packed, it took forever to get the bartenders attention and the hipster crowd was overwhelming as hell.

Nice atmosphere for a young crowd. Great music. They played a lot of Rise Against which was awesome. Nice big space and the seats at the bar were comfortable. They have a variety of beers and the cocktails were tasty. The bartender was really friendly and actually paid attention to my bday on the id and said happy birthday ! Had a really fun time, would definitely go back and bring friends.

Cool place on a week day. Gets a bit crowded on weekends. Taps always rotate which is nice. Right now drinking left hand nitro stout Crowd is usually pretty relaxed, can get over whelmed with hipsters at times though

Really chill environment. Great craft beers, friendly employees. Amazing service! Not only for a young group of people. Good for all ages. Always a good playlist of music. Good local hot spot, a bar from the lower east side planted in south shore.

Been here a couple times and always enjoy it. The prices on the beers range from reasonable to very very unreasonable. There is always a great and unique selection(HUGEHUGESELECTION) however which makes it worth every penny you spend. The only complaint I ever have about the place is(1) it is always so f***ing cold in there and(2) the overwhelming smell of incense is way too much sometimes. Otherwise, I am definitely a fan and always look forward to returning.

For those who know me I am not a huge bar going guy. Love a good restaurant and the occasional bar. I do feel the need to point out one bar in particular that i revisited recently. I had Been to Effin Gruven several times in the past and it was a solid place but nothing to write home about. When I went last week I have to say the place and vibe looked updated. They have some cool concert posters now decorating the walls and definitely seems like the place has some fresh paint. One thing you may struggle with is that they have over 20 beers on tap which are constantly changing. YES people this is a good thing! On the night I was there they were even giving away/raffling off a surf board and bike(no unfortnately I did not win :(but I wont hold that against them. Unfortunately it seems like they don’t have a full menu just yet but I had the chicken fingers and they were fantastic! Seems like the menu is a work in progress If you want to talk beer, the staff is extremely knowledgeable about the different styles available and I love that I can sample anything on tap as some of the crafts I just dont have the taste buds for. The laid back vibe is different from a lot of the other bars you find on every other corner on Long Island. Definitely check it out if you want good beer, cool atmosphere, and a good crowd.

Been going to Effin forever, they always have clean taps and the beer is always good. The staff and management are great people and the crowd is usually pretty great. I’ve never had any issues with this place. If you’re into IPA’s always ask for what’s on tap. Tons of seasonal selections.

Nice dive with great selections. Music was way too loud when I went here(yeah I’m a grandma), and that took away from my date a little bit. I find it a little douchey that they make fun of Bud drinkers, but I do understand that with the tons of beers they have to offer, you should be more open into trying them! They let you sample the beers, which is cool. Pigging out on fries while pounding beers? I love it.

The bartender who looked like she must have been about 15. I’ll toss that out there. Everything about Effin’ Gruven tok me by surprise. First off; from the looks of the outside I always assumed this was some sort of Hippie Commune/Urban Outfitters kind of clothing store. I was obviously wrong. It is a real nice bar that plays good music and is a great place to chill. I appreciated the large beer menu(as I always do) and the fair prices. They were out of the beer I wanted to try, so I ordered a different one. After tasting it, I asked for a full glass. The bartender pulled the wrong tap and I was given a different(but coincidentally even better) beer from the same brewery. A happy accident, I suppose. The crowd ranged from mostly mid-twenties types like myself to some older people at a table, to the two coolest guys in the bar. My friend and I wanted to play foosball, so we got change for a few bucks at the counter, and headed to the back. The well already(still?) had some of the game balls in it, and there were two older guys, in their sixties, standing by the machine. We asked if they were playing, and they offered to play against us. After promptly having our asses handed to us, my friend traded to the other side of the table and we proceeded to spend the next twently minutes playing two more games with these guys and getting schooled in the ways of the foosball table. It was really fun, and very memorable. I look forward to going back to Effin Gruven.

Best bar in the area for my friends and I to go to. This place is always our go-to spot. Thank god you’re here. I’m confused why Ken L. consistently gives 4 star reviews to places that he will go back to and has no complaints for. Weird.

Feels like a college bar, with a slightly older crowd. I’d say most of the patrons were in their mid– to late-20s. It reminded me of a small town college bar. I had a few drinks with a couple of friends, and enjoyed playing foosball. I’d go back.

I really liked this bar! It took one of my friends to convince me to walk in here on a Saturday night because it looks a little off putting from the outside; just a basic building with one neon sign hanging over the door. However, upon walking inside I was very surprised. The space was large with high ceilings and a raised dining area. The bar also spanned the entire length of the room. If you can’t stand the smell of incense I would suggest not coming here, but I got used to it after about two minutes so it was no big deal to me. The crowd was young, 21 to 35-ish, and very hipster(lots of dudes with huge beards wearing flannel and girls with kimonos) but I felt like my friends and I blended in just fine. The beer selection is massive! I personally am a cider fan and they had about 8 or so to choose from(which is a large difference from the normal bar with just Angry Orchard on tap). I will totally come here again!

I used to come here a lot to meet up with friends for a few hours and a few drinks but we stopped coming here as often because it would get way too crowded. I also think it started bringing in a younger crowd(ie. college). More recently, we started to return as the scene os always changing and it isn’t always as crazy as it used to be. Also, the parking lot is very small and difficult to manuever in. However, this place is great! Overall it is a pretty chill bar with almost a microbrew kind of vibe. I am not a beer drinker but they had very good beers on tap, awesome names and the bartender was nice about helping me find a beer I’d like.

I want to give this place 5 stars for the outstanding beer selection and the amazingly friendly knowledgable bartenders alone… but I just can’t. I beg of you to remodel, turn up the lights and KILL the incense. I came here with my girlfriend, we enjoy good beer and enjoy talking about beer, sat at the bar and chatted up the staff. We ordered some great beer on draft and then asked the bartender to «surprise us». He surely did. He brought up some delights in bottles that made us squeal like schoolgirls. He thanked us for drinking good beer, and we thanked him for having good beer. He also gave us a round on the house, which is always appreciated! My complaints are probably what most people love about this place so I wonder if I sound like a tool. Parking is a nightmare, the bar is so so so dark and just smells so strongly of incense. It’s almost too strong and can really tamper your sense of smell when tasting the beer. Am I so old, cause this place gets too crowded for my liking nowadays. I feel like I would come here more often if the ambience was a little different. However, I really don’t want to slam the place as they have really wonderful staff and beer selection.

I love coming here with friends for a chill night. Great Bartenders and I try and get something new to drink every time I come. Place has a modern hippie style. No Budweiser. Do yourself a favor and order an IPA or a pale ale !(Ok just do both you know you want to). They only sell fries and pizza(which kind of stinks) but the salty cheesy Italian fries were perfect with beer. By midnight they were out of fries, so order fast. I’ll be back again… and again.

2.5 if that was an option. Cool looking bar. But smelled straight up like vomit. Open the doors. Air it out man. I left before even ordering. The smell was outright burning my nostrils. I’ll come back once they clean up. Spray some bleach on the floor or something.

The beer selection here is great. The reason for one star is the service. My friend and I were ignored for a few minutes and when we finally got one of the bartenders attention he seemed annoyed that we actually wanted a beer. He had no patience to make a suggestion. We had one drink and left soon after. Thanks for making us uncomfortable. We will not be back.

Nice bar! Just came back from a Monday night outing with old friends. The bar was pretty much empty but it smelled of incense and had a cool relaxed atmosphere. In addition to the bar there was a seating area where we spent our time. Place has a foos ball table and a decent craft beer selection on a chalkboard behind the bar(wish there were a few drink menus so I could get a better look, but hey, it’s a bar). Great bartender, nice atmosphere, good drink selection. What else could you ask for? Want a low key night in a cool local bar? This is your place.
