I feel clean, fresh, and healthy eating here. This is perfect when you want a filling meal but don’t want a greasy, heavy meal. I have a hearty appetite and half a roll was more than enough for me — so at $ 11/roll — share it with a friend for a healthy lunch. The flavor combinations are unique — I had the Upstream(grilled salmon) and it had all sorts of interesting things inside of it(I liked the clear noodle things and tangy mayo dressing). The rolls all have different inside ingredients, meaning they took care to create flavor & texture combinations — it’s not just a «choose your filling» kind of place. Very clean and«eco-friendly» interior — with compostables and simple, peaceful interior… like a place you could eat after doing yoga.

I was trying to wait to leave a review until I tried the other sushi burrito spot near my work… but i walk further to this stop every time I’m craving it. I just can’t get enough Sumo Roll. I have tried the Baja California and the Shinsen. Shinsen is my favorite, because it is HUGE and bursting with an incredible variety of flavors and textures. It has seaweed salad, fresh tuna, its saucey, it has veggies but none of the flavors overpower each other. It has sunflower seeds in it, which weirded me out when I first saw it– but once I tried it, I loved it. I shall never doubt again. These people clearly knew what they were doing when they put the flavor combos together, because the food is incredible. The Baja California is also delicious. Sort of like a California roll with a delicious fresh tempura shrimp and veggies and saucieness inside. You really can’t go wrong. And they have a rewards program! My favorite place to go when I want to eat lunch out at work! To be honest, I haven’t gone anywhere else since discovering it. haha

Just like sushiritto which you can find in SF, this place makes big sushi burritos! Pretty good, I liked the roll I got which had raw fish in it. Overall, I liked the combination of flavors together, but not a must try place. I ordered this online so don’t know what the store looks like. The portion is also not that big, but quite tasty!

Sumo Roll has SOMANY good things going for this place. I’m surprised I haven’t heard of it even though this place has been located near Berkeley West Circle for so long. I guess I was too into Sushi Secrets to pay attention. Sumo Roll is pretty much a variant of the whole«sushi burrito» trend. It’s very similar to Sushiritto, Sushi secrets, or whatever sushi burrito place you’ve heard of. But this place is definitely worth checking out and here’s why. Atmosphere: Small spot but very quiet. I love that they put up a Christmas tree. The service was great even though only two people were working. The cashier was super sweet and kind. While we were debating whether our food was ready, she kindly butt in to let us know behind the counter haha. Food: I ordered the upstream, which was a salmon/veggie roll. Needless to say, the burrito roll was pretty bomb! The salmon was delicious and the various veggies inside the rolls which I don’t remember were very crisp. The aioli sauce was also flavorful! The only thing I’d suggest is to put less sauce — it was a bit overwhelming. Overall: Great food and price point(8 – 11) is standard for a meal. This is better than sushi secrets and a good alternative to Sushiritto. CHECKITOUT EATWELLANDPROSPER,

Biggest sushi roll I ever had. Saw it on my way to work and had to check them out. It was filling that’s for sure, there sauces and filling is a bit on tangy and light side. I was hoping for something a bit more savory but still not bad I would defiantly would not pass on a free burrito from them but till then I’ll stick to a traditional one for now.

Not a huge menu but tons of delicious veggie choices that make each roll taste unique.

This place just opened three months ago right underneath of the building where I live(Oxford hall). The staff is friendly and the decorations are nice, very green! I ordered a Baja California and it was delicious, very fresh products and I think real crab, it sure taste it like it! I usually don’t like too healthy food but this place is the exception! If you appreciate fresh food, this is the place for you! Why four stars instead of five then? Well, I don’t know; some atmosphere inside the restaurant was missing. But great fresh food! You should at least try it.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this place. I got the Upstream roll and it was huge! I couldn’t eat it all in one sitting. I’m really happy how this roll tasted. It wasn’t what I expected but in a good way. The flavors blended really well with each other which makes this roll very carefully crafted. The sauce they use is also great, NO soy sauce needed!

Customer service was great. The two guys at the front were super friendly! We originally ordered two Kamikaze sushi rolls, but we changed our minds halfway through and wanted to switch one to a Hawaiian and the workers were very accommodating. Overall the food was amazing and super filling for the price($ 9.75 for the Kamikaze and $ 11.00 for the Hawaiian). The kamikaze was our favorite and just the right amount of spicy. The Hawaiian was good too, but not as flavorful. As a sashimi lover, I would have loved for the Hawaiian to have had more sushi. But other than that, this was an awesome restaurant that I will be ordering from again in the future.

Another sushi burrito spot opens in Berkeley. I came in by myself and got the kamikaze(spicy tuna) and upstream(salmon). I didn’t like the kamikaze very much because everything was cold. Perhaps I should of waited to eat it at room temperature. It also wasn’t spicy enough for me. Habañero tuna is not bad idea. They should consider different levels of spiciness. I ate the upstream later in the day and tasted much better at room temperature. It was much more flavorful. The rolls are very plumpy with lots of toppings/ingredeints. It seems that the rolls have more toppings than actual fish. A little more fish/protein would be nice. You can always add extra for $ 2.95 I sure don’t mind paying for extra fish/shrimp. I just hope the extra portion is as much as the portion that the rolls originally come with. I originally was going to give Sumo Roll 4 stars but decided to give them 5 because they are using the FIVESTARS customer loyalty program which rewards you with a free roll after you accumulate certain amount of points.

Best sushi burrito place I’ve been to. It fills you up but more importantly everything is in proportion so it doesn’t taste like a giant gob of fish or rice. My only complaint is their limited sauces, all of which I have tried are utterly terrible. I had to edit this again and subtract a star for their sauces. My wife agreed that they’re pretty gross and detract from the product. Also the baked salmon roll was pretty heinous. So, just avoid that. But seriously they need a non-mayo non-aioli sauce that has some spice to it.

Omg! I am absolutely speechless about this place. I discovered this place today as I walked through Allston. I’m so glad I did! At first I walked by, and saw it said sushi burritos. That immediately caught my attention and I had to go in. I got the Shogun and a Baja sushi burrito. I’m not a big fan of sea food, so the shogun is a perfect alternative. I got the Baja for my dad, and he absolutely loved it. He said it reminded him of a huge California roll. They were so friendly and gave me alternatives to substitute something that I didn’t want. I will definitely be coming back!

Food: High quality ingredients, lots of veggies and very tasty. Not an excessive amount of rice. It’s like a burrito sized maki roll. One is plenty for a whole meal. We’ve had chicken, tempura and tuna so far, and all were delicious and filling. We go there for lunch after going to the YMCA. It’s convenient if you happen to be in Downtown Berkeley. Parking: No easy nearby parking. Metered street if your lucky or local parking garages. Only a couple of blocks from the downtown Berkeley BART. Service: Friendly and fast. Everything made to order. Size: Just a few tables. Never had a problem getting a seat. Good place for takeout too.

Time: 1:03pm/87°F sunny Purpose: Open since August 1st, I just didn’t have time to check it out till today. Mainly due to meet ups with clients nearby. I never go to an area with less than three meet up. Ambiance: Place is a 19 seater with ten of it being counter table facing wall. Inner back three round repurpose wooden table with three seats each. One flatscreen menu board hung above with retractable line control belt in front. Counter partion glass, and metal ingredient bins fill up most of the space. Color scheme is mostly mint n chip for the most part. Wall décor with mini pallet cuts and spray painted silhouette. Doors resemble Japan version sliding doors and locking mechanism. I haven’t been to a public restroom with sliding door a long time. Music genre playing Steely Dan album«Peg» at medium volume. The back echoe with a pack to capacity place you may not hear each other. Staff: Two girls and one guy all under 30. Very upbeat with their job. When my turn came, I place order and watch them. They ask how much of each side I wanted. So, I guided them through till it was wrapped up and cut in half. Each one of them has a part in making process. Cleanliness: Grade A, looks immaculate clean all around. Trash can up front no odor or overstuffed. Brita water dispenser sparkling clean no fingerprints. Eats/Drinks: Hawaiian $ 11 was decent as expected for a seaweed roll poki. I guided the clerk of how much of this and that I wanted on rest of the fixings. To my surprise whole blanched yuzu green bean were use. Thats even better. By now, its getting serious here. So I went closer with nose within inches of glass while breathing heavily. Yes, more and less that please? It was just alright nothing special or wowing. House made ahi tuna was tasty in cube form not sinew looking. Rest of ingredients mostly veggies were great. No wilted spring mix, pickled cucumber had some crunch. Now, it was tasty and gets you full, but price point, it should’ve price around $ 9 area. That’s IMHO! Products/Services: Shinsen, Hawaiian, Kamikaze, Shogun, Baja California, Upstream, Crustacean, Kabuki, Midori, assorted cold bottled juice, water, root beer, green tea. Add shrimp or fish $ 2.95/add brwon rice $ 1.50. Gluten free, Fivestar loyalty sign up. Punch Lines: New, clean, zippy service, minimal seating, vegetarian/GF available, loyalty program, pleasing flavors, drool-worthy, imaginable toppings, calm vibe, can’t go wrong, casual and delicious, California influenced, a twist on traditional favorites, good and sloppy, satisfactory. Tradeoffs: You’re eating a poki bowl in a giant sushi form. Bowl would hold more than a sushi roll or burrito form. Final Thoughts: It’s a great place hit up if you’re not concerned about your funds situation. For me its nothing new as, Sushirrito and Torpedo Sushi are similar in offerings. So, well I be back? Yes! I will, but this time, I’ll have them make it deconstruct style. This way it won’t be as messy as each bite. Chewy seaweed with ingredients falling apart is not ideal. I don’t mind eating it with a fork and seaweed on the side. After all, it’ll still be eaten only in a non traditional way.

Wow! To be honest, I’m in the small minority of people who don’t go crazy for Sushi. In fact, I’m the guy who always orders Teriyaki Chicken at the Sushi restaurant. Sacrilege! I know, I know. However, I had heard some good things about this place and my girlfriend LOVES sushi so we figured we’d give it a try. Since it was our first time, we decided to proceed with caution and only ordered one Sumo Roll and split it(a mistake I would soon regret). Upon taking my first bite of the Baja Roll, the first thing I noticed was that there was no «fishy-ness.» Everything tasted fresh, flavorful and… wait…is that… REALCRABMEAT??? Oh my good Lord in Heaven, that is definitely real crab meat! Needless to say, I was totally sold after the first bite. The crispness of the Tempura Shrimp combined with the sweetness of the(real) crab, and the tanginess of whatever awesome sauce they used was like a trip to Disneyland for my taste buds. It was then that I realized that I was going to have to be extra nice to my girlfriend so that I could talk her out of her half of our Sumo Roll. Sadly, my efforts were in vain. She made it very clear that there would be no more sharing this evening. There’s a happy ending to the story though(for me anyway). I failed to mention this earlier, but these rolls are called Sumo for a reason and they definitely live up to their name. In other words, they are big! So big, in fact, that my dainty girlfriend couldn’t finish all of hers. What a shame. Never one to let food go to waste, I offered to do what any gentleman do… finish the rest of it for her(who said chivalry was dead). She reluctantly agreed and moments later, our Baja Roll become nothing more that a wonderful, delicious, memory. All’s well that ends well :) But, if I could have just a bit more of your time, there’s something else I’d like to add. This review would be incomplete if I failed to mention what wonderful customer service we received. Everyone was so friendly! So in conclusion, if you’re on the fence about trying Sumo Roll, like I was, stop debating and start making your way over to this awesome little shop. Just make sure that if you bring a friend, you both get your own rolls because, trust me, you are not going to want to share. Enjoy!

This place is pretty hip; pretty Eco-friendly; the workers are amiable as well. It was pretty empty when I got here though. The aesthetics of the food are great, but it may have been that I was way too tired to taste the actual flavor of the food I ate(Kamikaze Roll). I didn’t like that it had a 3:1 vegetable and sauce to tuna ratio. I might visit this restaurant again just to try it without so much sauce and vegetables, but aside from that, I’d say I wasn’t all too satisfied or «wowed».

Man, this place is awesome. I call myself a sushi conniseur and this place is gooooood. it’s worthy to mention that I’ve been to sushiritto multiple times and I feel like this place is fresher, cooler, and better. I got the Hawaiian roll which contains poke tuna, and man, let me tell you that thing was BOMB!!! Super fresh, tasty, and filling. It’s a must recommend. I’m definitely going to come back during lunch time or whenever I’m in Berkeley. It’s definity worth the trip.

I’m so sad that I am not the first reviewer! I have been waiting for this place to open for about half year since it is on my way home. The roll is really good. Very healthy. It also have some special ingredients that are rarely available in other sushi place such like sea noodles.
