Last March I was reminded of the necessity of having well-​tuned skis when I found myself alone on Upper Vortex at Sunday River one brisk morning after a Spring thaw the day before. On my descent I encountered ice in all its iterations – bumped crust, crud, death cookies and boilerplate. I’m glad that I had sharp edges.
