At the risk of revealing the worst-kept secret in Big Bear, this is probably the best place to watch 4th of July fireworks in Big Bear Lake. We sat on the tiny park beach by the pier(not the nice Swim Beach) and had front row seats to one of the best fireworks shows that I’ve ever seen. Subtracting one star each for: — Crowds: There’s basically zero shade and the small patch of available grass gets filled up early in the day, so unless you want to literally sit in dirt, beach chairs and an umbrella are highly suggested. — Traffic: It took us ONEHOUR to drive ¼ mile back to our cabin. If you don’t need a cooler or EZ-up, for the love of all that is holy, pack a picnic in a backpack and ride your bicycle in. MARTA buses didn’t run on 7÷4÷13 either. Next time, I think I’ll just find a place on the North Shore, or find a friend with a pontoon! :)

Frankly, this should be on the TOP10 things ‘NOTTODO’ in Big Bear. The ‘swim test/life vest’ requirement mentioned below sounds innocent enough, but their rules state that only 25 people in vests at a time are allowed in the water, and they rotate the vests every 30 minutes. From the time we stood in line for the test to when we got a life vest was almost 90 minutes. This was a complete waste of time. Find something else to do when you’re in Big Bear

This place isn’t open on Tuesday or Wednesday. Kinda stinks ‘cuz it was cold and rainy all weekend… the week heats up and my kids can’t go swimming! Geez… you’re only open a few month a year. Should be opened every day during the summer. Totally disappointed.

Granted, it’s not much when compared to an ocean beach. But when the May Gray and June Gloom persist into July, sometimes a dip into a cold mountain lake is just what you wanted. Be warned, to get beyond 4.5 feet, you have to line for a very easy swim test(freestyle & backstroke) and judging from how badly people could swim and still pass, you won’t have a problem. To play on the floating slide and trampoline, you have to queue for a few minutes for a life jacket(!) It seems unnecessary until you consider that people get winded swimming at high altitude and a swimmer could get knocked into another and fall unconscious. Another warning — the sand doesn’t go very deep, so beach umbrellas won’t stay upright. Start with a hike to Castle Rock — breathtaking! Grab sandwiches and while away the afternoon at the beach.
