My reviews all start the same. Everyplace I review starts with 5 stars and I remove one star for each negative experience. So, as you can see this place is pretty good. My wife and I wanted Mexican food and we had been to the other places several times in Bishop so we decided to try a new place. First impressions were good. Clean lobby and quick greeting from the staff. We were sat in a booth and the drink order was taken immediately. Chips and salsa accompanied the drinks. Their salsa is excellent by the way. The waitress was talking to apparent regulars so she was a little slow getting to our order. We both ordered fajitas, one steak and one chicken. The chips and salsa was refilled while waiting for the order to come out as was my ice tea. The food came and was sizzling on the skillets which is a must for fajitas. Those places that bring out fajitas on plates need to get a clue. The food was excellent. Right temp, quantity and timing. Overall we enjoyed our meal and would recommend the fajitas to anyone. There were three minor negatives with our visit that do not justify a star taken away for each but rather one for the combined. First was the service. Waitress was a little slow and I actually had to go and find her to pay the bill and get a to go container. She was sitting at a table in the lounge area talking to other staff. Second was we were charged for bean dip and sour cream. Most Mexican restaurants I have been to have a scoop of sour cream and guacamole on the plates but not here. Also I have been to some places where they bring out bean dip with the salsa. Not a big deal. And third was the tortillas. Obviously store bought. I know not all Mexican restaurants can make their own tortillas but the ones that I give 5 stars to do. So, yes I highly recommend this restaurant and will fe returning. Also make sure to check in on Unilocal while there for 10% taken off of your check! Cheers

Delicious mom and pop Mexican restaurant. It is a family run restaurant. Everyone is so friendly and the food is so good. Best chili relleno in town. Also serve beer and wine. Can be a little pricey but worth it. Also serves breakfast all day but does not open until 11.

The best Mexican in this town for sure! It’s legit and everything is good, chimichanga enchilada style is the #1 in Cali guaranteed, Salsa always has too much Cumin but it’s decent

I’ve eaten at Astorga’s for a lot of years and several locations. Their current location is in the North end of Bishop… right on 395 and easy to get in and out of. Our server was Sylvia and first thing i asked about was her recommendations… Take it from me, she nailed it with the Chile Rellano plate. It’s their own recipe and it melts in your mouth. Best Rellanos I have ever eaten. Sylvia and all of the folks at Astorga’s seem to really care about a quality dining experience. Highly recommend it for a meal(they do breakfast and lunch) when in Bishop.

Great spot to stop on 395. Breakfast all day and the machaca was delicious. Home fries instead the typical soggy Spanish rice. Tasty guac! All at fair prices.

Drove in late on a Sunday evening with my family, friendly service form the hostess/waitress, she suggested the homemade tamales… Fresh and tasty…, the kids had quesadillas, and the salsa, not bad… will definitely be back.

Second time we’ve eaten here in the past two months and both times have been outstanding. I ordered the Chili Relleno Cheese Enchilada combo plate. In my opinion, they make one the very best Chili Rellenos of most Mexican Restaurant restaurants anywhere. Great service and outstanding food make for a winning combination.

This restaurant is located on the north end of town on the right as you enter town and past the Paiute Palace. It’s located on a corner, but can be somewhat hard to see. All parking is in the back. The pavement on Hwy 395/Main St. is painted with«No Parking» all along that side of the building. The place was fairly packed on a Friday night. Lots of family groups filled most of the tables. The server was friendly, but it was clearly too busy a night for them to be very attentive. We received one small bowl of salsa and some chips. We ordered quickly, then started muting on the chips. The salsa did not last long, and no one came by to check to see if we needed more. They do offer free WIFI with a decent connection, so truthfully, I wasn’t as annoyed at the lack of attentiveness, because I was able to check messages on the internet. Before I knew it, the food we’d order, 3 different tacos, street-style, and a house style burrito. The food was well-made and tasty. We were famished from hiking all day(and it being a long time since we’d had lunch sandwiches.). I would definitely return here to eat.

Came down from fishing and saw 4 stars for this place. Turns out it was 25 minutes until closing, so we ordered to go. If you order to go, only forks are provided. No napkins, salt or pepper, or knives. I was told they were out of salsa and thankfully I asked if chips came w it and I think there would have been a charge for chips and salsa, but the young man helping us just had getting out of there on his mind. My cheese enchiladas were comparable to Taco Bell’s enchiritos– not that great. My dad ordered a burrito, he said it was good, but eating a wet burrito w just a fork was challenging. After all, I received a small bag of chip and a generous portion of pico de gallo, which was outstanding. They have a patio if you are traveling w a pet and lots of tables inside. 2 stars bc of ok food and service that could have been better.

Mm, mm, MM! I over-ate, and I ain’t even mad. First off, the complimentary chips and salsa are fantastic… chips aren’t salty, and the salsa is fresh and delicious — some of the best I’ve had. I’d buy it if it were at the local store. As for the plate I ordered, daaaaaamn tasty. I got the enchilada and chile relleno combination and was pleased that it tasted unlike most other Mexican restaurants, which is a good thing. The sauce on the chile relleno didn’t have a generic flavor to it. I thought it was pretty good, but probably not the best I’ve ever had — I was also a little disappointed that the pepper was very mild in terms of heat. The enchilada I got with chicken and I enjoyed it, especially the stringy-as-hell cheese on top. No fake crap at Astorga’s. The rice and beans were also better than most places. I give Astorga’s four stars because the waitressing was brutal… she didn’t split the check, the food took awhile to come out, and she was just negligent all-around. This was some of the more unique tasting Mexican food I’ve ever had, but the service keeps me from giving five stars. This was a great stop.

On the outskirts of bishop as you are leaving bishop and heading to Mammoth Lakes. Thoroughly enjoyed the food. Not at all oily and very clean tasting. Their chips and salsa are amazing. Thin thin chips made on the premises. Would definitely come back.

First place in Bishop that I found has a coupon for checking in!!! Ok so we went there for dinner. I would have given it 5 stars for food but our server sucked. I even had to remind her again after we got the check about the Unilocal coupon for 10% off. She really sucked at keeping up on us. Took 20 minutes to place our order. There were about 7 tables total with people at them including us and the patio. Our server was the blonde Mexican girl. The décor is lacking. You walk into this house turned restaurant on hwy 395 north end of town. As soon as you walk in you see the cashier/hostess stand next to the door. No sign saying please wait or seat yourself. So we stood there waiting. Directly in front of you is the pick up window. At least the cook said someone would be right with you. The cook was the owner’s son Jose. Nicest guy and good cook! On the ground is warn carpet and all I think is how many spills happen on this carpet and how often it’s cleaned(which judging by the shape of the carpet I’m guessing not very often). There really is no décor there are vinyl booths along the wall and windows. We ordered a quesadilla for an appetizer it said it came with sour cream and guacamole it did not. My mom ordered Mexican tacos and I ordered crunchy tacos. Both came with rice and refried beans. The food was flavorful my crunchy tacos were soggy from the juices in the shredded beef and chicken but tasted good.

Service is bad, location is dirty and run-down, but hey, what can you expect in a town like this? Food is yummy and fast, so why not order to take away? :-)

Stopped by after our final day of climbing in the ORG. It was only about 4:30 in the afternoon, but we were famished. We were seated in the room off of the main dining area because we arrived with 6 and expected more to join us later. We were seated at a table that could easily seat 20. Chips and salsa were immediately dropped off. They were super good! The salsa is definitely freshly made, with lots of tomatoes and green onions and plenty of chilies for heat. I think it also tasted a bit garlicky. The chips were warmed, though I couldn’t tell if they were freshly made. Regardless, they were tasty and stood up well to the salsa. We ordered a pitcher of margaritas and were disappointed to taste that they were likely from a mix, as they were too sweet and not tart at all. Also, we had to prompt the server to bring lime and salt. I ordered my usual default Mexican favorite of chicken enchiladas with red sauce and rice. I wish that the description would have indicated that they come topped with green onions, sliced olives, and cotija cheese as well as the usual red sauce and cheese. It looked pretty, but I scraped it off because I don’t like any of those. The meal was delicious and super filling. My friends also seemed to enjoy their entrees, especially the shrimp and steak fajita combo. The service was super friendly, and the servers remained calm, even when our party of 6 ballooned another three times until it ultimately reached 12 people in total. Our server let us pay our check up front, order by order. And we got to use the 10% off for my Unilocal check-in! I will definitely return to Astorga’s on my next climbing trip in Bishop!

This place gave me high hopes because of the reviews on here but alas, I was disappointed. They didn’t have half of the things we wanted to order for my order or my husbands! Also heard them apologizing to other tables for not having items on the menu for them either. It’s a Friday night and they were not that busy, so where did all the jorchata and tamales go?! I had 3 tacos with over seasoned meat, more salt than actual meat. The only highlight of the meal was the refried beans. Those were made to perfection! Also, my husband’s chicken enchilada was good. Service was sufficient. Basically… meh.

Stopped for breakfast on the way back from a Mammoth-area wedding, and were pleasantly surprised. Found Astorga’s by doing a Unilocal review for Mexican restaurants in Bishop, and this one had some great comments and reviews. I especially looked forward to the spicy salsas and the Chile relleno burrito(which was great). The salsa they serve with their chips is garlicky, chunky, and on the hot side of medium. We asked for other spicier salsas and our server brought us out both other options. A mild roasted tomatillo was flavorful and the super spicy dark red salsa was the hottest of them all. All three tasted great on my burrito. We were the only customers in the place at 11am on a Sunday; a lot of people were at the Village café for brunch behind this place. However, I would highly recommend coming here for breakfast. I personally love a good Mexican breakfast, as I’m usually craving hot & spicy in the morning(not sure why).
