I love hats and I’m glad to find a store that has good quality hats. The service of the staff can be hit or miss. The first time I was there the service was great. The second time my husband and I were ignored by the staff and when a couple with kids came in the staff went over to help them and made them feel welcome. I did buy a hat that trip but given the customer service I should have passed. The last time the customer service was excellent. I was greeted shortly after entering and questions were answered right away about the hat I was looking at. I hope my next trip had service like that.

What an amazing store!!! The staff are great, selection awesome and competitive prices. This shop has something for everyone. High end. low end… and lots inbetween. Both my husband and I were on vacation and found the perfect hats at the right price. Finally a shop with style and selections instead of buying cheap quality at low end retailers and basic hats at major department stores. Thanks Chapel… well done!

Their customer service philosophy seems to be «All or bitchy.» On my first visit, I was absolutely stalked by the sales associate, whose style was obviously very different than my own, but who endured to suggest different hats the whole time I was there. I confessed that I really preferred to browse alone, and was self-conscious about trying on hats in front of someone I didn’t know. This well-meaning offering fell on deaf ears. In the end, I got a hat I knew I didn’t want just to get out of the store. Which brings me to my second experience: the return. When I went to return said hat, I noticed that it does say 30-days on their receipt. Fair enough, but I figured(after years in retail back in college when we’d even take back clothes with no tags covered in cat hair at the Gap to keep the customer happy, and coming back!) that there would be some kind of store credit option or a similar compromise. Oh, no. This time I got a surly, hungover associate whose first question was«Why did you wait so long?» I suggested that we might be able to work out a compromise. He told me «I’ll call the manager lady, but she’ll say no.» Indeed she did, in a 5-second conversation whose validity I doubt. I said that was ok, but added that«If you guys ever talk about customer feedback in your meetings, please let them know that you had a customer who was unhappy about the return policy.» I was really trying to me nice. He got very upset, and told me that if I knew the return policy, I should have returned the hat earlier. I simply told him that I don’t often get to the Mall of America, but to please communicate my feedback. He lost it, cut me off, and said«Thanks a lot,» in that«I-really-mean-eff-you» find of way. Glad to see a new, non-Chapel hat store opening in Uptown next to the Uptown theater. I’ll be going there from now on(I actually semi-collect hats) — I suggest you do, too.

I’m a big fan of the quality, price and selection. The employees really care about hats. I talked off the manager’s ear about pork pie hats. Another employee told me that when they do have pork pie hats(i.e. Buster Keaton hats), they sell out fast because there’s a weirdly aggressive subset of hat consumers that loves them just that hard. Yep, taking off a star for not having Buster Keaton hats.

Great prices for fashionable head pieces and numerous options for fellow«made in the usa» consumers. Check then out. No santana line as of now and some of the surfer styles should be purchased on islands for better selection and prices.
