Function Brewing

I really love the beer menu here and also the service is always consistent and friendly. My husband and I usually pop in for the Sunday beer and sandwich special and I have yet to be disappointed. I recently moved away, but was quick to eat at Function when I was back in town for my last visit. The menu is simple but very delicious.
The addition of the stringed lights is a nice touch, it warms the place up and helps cut down the «cavernous» feel the place has.

I absolutely love this place. I’ve been here at least 10 times since they opened and it’s always been an enjoyable experience. The servers are ALWAYS super friendly and attentive. Hard to find that in a restaurant. I’ve seen a lot of bad reviews about slow service, and I’m really surprised. I’ve been here plenty of times and have never had slow service. In fact, I love this place for the chill vibes and great servers.
The food is a very specific flavor — think jalapeños and pickled veggies. The blue cheese cole slaw and El Jefe panini pressed sandwich perfectly sum up their cuisine. Both are a must try!!! While I’m not always in the mood for a spicy sandwich, I definitely go to Function when I am.
And of course the beer. Function has my absolute favorite milk stout. Even better than Left Hand! I can always drink a pint of that sweet deliciousness. And when I’m not able to drink a whole pint, I really appreciate that they offer 10oz glasses of every beer on tap! As a light-​weight, that is so necessary. But I really like that Function is always trying new flavors. My boyfriend loves to come here and try out the latest tap. They really do experiment. They had a chipotle stout when we were there a couple days ago. And if we aren’t digging the new beers, we’ve got the classics to fall back on.

After a long cold trip in a topless vehicle, we decided to grab a beer heading through Bloomington to warm up. We were absolutely delighted with what we found at Function.
The place has one of the coolest feels that matches their theme perfectly; and I can appreciate a themed place. The beers are cleverly named with math in mind and their logo is absolutely perfect.
We started with a flight to see where to go from there. With the exception of one beer (not cold enough) we loved each one, my favorite being the chipotle porter and the smoked Amber. We both got the Peter Piper sandwich consisting of warm lean roast beef, cheddar cheese, chipotle aioli and pickled peppers. While the boyfriend got chips, I couldn’t help myself but to try the spicy blue cheese cole slaw. To die for.
It was quick and easy to park and the service by Rosie was perfect. Would highly recommend to anyone who appreciates a well-​crafted brew pub.

This place is fantastic. It looks great inside, there’s plenty of attentive staff and they brew SO many kinds of beer. I had the Imperial Spiced Blonde, the strongest blonde beer I’ve ever had at 9.4% ABV, and it was delightful. I also had the Integrand IPA which was very good. But the real MVP was the cuban sandwich on special, which was one of the best I’ve ever had. It was served with a pickle and homemade potato chips which were also really good.
They should be distributing their beer, but instead they’re only serving it in their restaurant\brewery and living in Upland’s shadow.

I would like to leave a much longer review but i am currently on an hours of waiting on a veggie sandwich. Unbelievable! If you are so «backed up» when all they serve is sandwiches and dips then hire some more people. I would leave but am here meeting a group, who also said their food took over an hour and they didn’t want it by the time it came.
I tried to flag down a manager for 10 minutes who was at the host stand in front of me. She avoided looking at all her tables. As we crossed the hour mark we told our server we no longer wanted the sandwich because our party was starting to pay out. One girl confided that her beer took ½ hour to reach the table and others reiterated company’s. We get our check for two rounds of drinks and i asked to speak to a manager to which he said «oh, i took off your sandwich» (thanks, we never got it and you couldn’t bring chips or anything to abate hunger for an hour).
The Manager came over and said how out of character this was and that she went to the kitchen and «fortunately they were able to give our sandwich to another table.» Fortunately because she would make us pay as our friends were leaving or fortunate that another table didn’t have to endure the incompetence that was their kitchen? Im not sure. She took off the round of beers that our server had charged us for after making it seem like it was on the house.
I work in the restaurant business and am sympathetic to restaurant problems. I would never recommend anyone spend their precious downtime in a place so inconsistent and badly overseen that going out is more stressful than not. Forethought on the part of the server, manager, or kitchen could have made anything right.

Such a cool little spot in Bloomington! When I went to IU, I saw a sign on this building saying «Coming Soon» and I couldn’t wait to try it. The atmosphere was very laid back and relaxing. They have a great selection of beers, I recommend getting a flight to try several out. I had the cheese and charcuterie board, which was delicious! A friend had their «El Jefe» Sandwich and loved it, said he could eat another one. I will definitely be back for more!

Great food, great beer. Love that there are no TVs. I had the southern gentleman sandwich and will never forget it.

Great place to stop in to fill up on some beer and warm food. The ambience is nice, but can get very loud once it fills up.
I got a flight of beers to sample 4 out of the 11 available beers on tap. It was a generous amount of beer for only $ 7, I recommended going this route if you’re indecisive like I was.
My beau and I decided to grab lunch there and I was pleasantly surprised with the awesome quality of food. I got the mysterious stranger with the soup of the day. The soup of the day was a fantastic, rustic veggie soup. It had a nice sweet, autumn flavor with bountiful mix of veggies in each spoonful. The mysterious stranger sandwich was very filling and delectable. Every bite was flavorful and oozing with goodness. Since I’m not a big blue cheese fan, i asked for aged cheddar and also added arugula to get my green fill for the meal. Our waitress was great and super friendly. Overall good experience, but don’t come here if you’re in a hurry.

Heard a lot about how the food was too expensive for the quality. Because I heard that comment about them when they opened, I stayed away until lunch today. I had their southern gentleman sandwich and their nanogon Belgian. It was a wonderful experience and well worth the price. Cheers.

Clean industrial chic atmosphere. Pretty good beer and great food. I personally love the sandwiches (jam and cheese is our fav) but everything we’ve had is great. The prices may seem a but steep for a sandwich but they’re one of the best tasting food items in Bloomington.

Love the atmosphere. The food is also AMAZING. Really like the owners. They are very nice and greeted us at the door and helped us to find exactly what we wanted on the menu. I ordered a sandwich as a lettuce wrap and it was great. The best part was the Blue Cheese coleslaw. IT WAS AMAZING!!! Best coleslaw I have ever had in my life!!!

Amazing coconut curry soup. Great atmosphere for being with friends and family. All five in our party said their food was amazing. Ratatouille, memory lane, salad, the coleslaw with blue cheese could be an entrée. Highly recommend if you want delicious food and fantastic beer. Did I mention the acute blonde is worth a growler full.

I’ve been looking forward to this for I dunno… a year at least! We arrived at 6pm on a Friday and there was plenty of seating. Keep in mind that this was the beginning of August so I imagine things get pretty busy once school starts.
I got a flight and was able to sample a few other beers that others at the table ordered. I typically do not like IPA’s but Function has definitely won me over! Their Tangent IPA was balanced with the hops not being overwhelming. LOVED the Acute Blonde. The Milk Stout had a smokiness for me (perhaps it was a function of the food and drink leading up to this one) but I still really enjoyed it! Duplicity really won me over as well. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my belgians!
The food selection is really great and they are more than happy to work with you if you have preferences/​allergies. A vegan was in the group and she had no trouble finding something.
I had the Ratatouille sandwich and wow was it amazing. The big chunks of mozz combined with the basil pesto … it had me at hello.
Zach, by the way, was an awesome server. He was attentive and provided great suggestions and answered all our questions. He is very knowledgeable and quick to bring food/​drink/​refills.

This brewery is firing on all cylinders. Great beer, great food, great service and all at a fair price. I had the Southern Gentleman, which is a hot sandwich and the loved the taste. This was served with a Sweet & Tangy Blue Cheese Coleslaw.
My wife had the Cheese Plate that contained 5 Artisan Cheeses and other goodies. This was also a winner.
We were offered samples of beer so that we could narrow down the wide beer list to those that we wanted, we had the Acute Blonde and Duplicity Belgian Dubbel. Lets just say these were smooth and I only wish that I had taken my growler for a fill up. Thanks for a great ending to our Bloomington day out.

Wow wow wow! This place is something else! Hands down, Function Brewing has the best cole slaw I have ever tasted. I heard they make it with a French dressing base! On Sundays, a sandwich and a beer cost $ 13. Amazing! I love that they offer outdoor seating now, too, that it is nice weather.

Love this place! Tried their beer at the brewfest and finally tried their food! Excellent!!! I had the Peter Piper and the wife had the Southern Gentleman! Both well worth it! Don’t know if I will try something new or try to pick between these two next time! Definitely will reccomend to others!!!

I’ve travelled to Bloomington a few times now, and each time I’ve tried to sample new spots to eat. This was my first time stoping at Function.
The design of the brewpub is very welcoming – clean, simple, and open concept. Not uppity, but not dive-​y either. I had a flight of beer, all of them good. I particularly enjoyed their milk stout.
What really put Function over the top for me was their sandwich selection. A handful of them sounded awesome. I chose the Smokehouse and my god, was it tasty. I eat a lot of pub-​grub and it was definitely in my top 15, maybe top 10 best sandwiches ever. The candied bacon and pickled jalapeños, in particular, were awesome.
Now, I’m not feeling so eager to try new sandwich spots in Bloomington. I think I’d rather try out the rest of Function’s sandwiches first…

Every time I go to Function, there is at least one beer on tap that I haven’t tried before, and I’ve been many times. It’s hard to even pick my favorites — Array Spiced Rye, Rhombus Roggenbier, Amber, Belgian Pale — all amazing. Get the sampler, why don’t you? Their food menu is made up of «fancy sandwiches». Lots of delicious vegan and vegetarian options. My favorite is The Farmer. I’ve also enjoyed the Jean Elizabeth and Ratatouille sandwiches, the cheese plate, and Goat in a Jam. The large windows overlooking 6^th Street are nice, and I love the laid back atmosphere.

Function Brewing boasts the best beer I have ever had in Bloomington, and will keep me coming back. This is the first time I have had a sampler and been absolutely blown away by the flavor, complexity, and uniqueness of every single sip. If you want an illuminating microbrewery experience, try the Tangent IPA, the Permutation IPA, the Toasted Rye, and the Array Rye. I can’t wait until bottling and growler fills begin, but until then, I’m not drinking anywhere else.

I got there right when they opened on a Saturday at 11 a.m. to meet my friend. When I walked in, I immediately noticed the nice woodwork on the tables and the general nice atmosphere of the place.
However, when it was time to be seated, instead of asking us where we would like to sit, the waitress (who also served as the hostess) sat us at a table for two in the middle of the room. I thought this was rather bizarre since there was clearly better seating still available that offered more privacy and was right by the large front window. I asked for us to be moved to a table by the window instead and she moved us without any hassle.
Both my friend and I each ordered the beer sampler which came with four samples for $ 5. I choose to taste the following (listed in order of preference): Hefeweizen, Single Hopped Pale (Magnum), Tangent (American IPA), and Rye IPA. I liked all of them with the Hefeweizen being my favorite. We also ordered the cheese plate to share, which was rather pricey but pretty large.
I think this place is definitely worth checking out if you drink beer. I could see it also being a cute date place too if you are looking for some place to take a date.
