Listen. Vegetarian jambalaya here is the best thing I’ve ever tasted. Eat it all day. Now, moving on to the review. Upland has been a staple of Bloomington for a number of years now, quickly becoming the brewery of greatest stature in southern Indiana and making itself known throughout the midwest for its wheats and sours. Like many breweries, though, they also know how to pick an amazing chef, and its brewpub has one of the best food selections in a city already known for great food. What you decide to order at Upland, and how and when you decide to visit, depends entirely on what you’re interested in. If you’re looking for interesting, innovative beer, you may prefer swinging by the Westside tap room in Bloomington or the Broad Ripple tasting room in Indianapolis, where you can try a lot ofdifferent brews pretty inexpensively. But if you’re already at the restaurant, steer clear of the fancy-branded beers posted on the wall. They’re fine, but you can find them anywhere and none of them is anything special. Instead, ask about Upland’s Side Trail series. These are small batch brews that are truly unique, and they will be hard to find in other places. If they have any sours on tap, give one a try, even if you don’t usually like sours — they have so many that you should ask for a recommendation to suit your palate. You might just be surprised to find there are some sours you like. And if you’re lucky enough to come by when a collaboration has recently been tapped, rejoice and imbibe. If you’re hungry and want good food, I will again motion towards the vegetarian jambalaya. Lifechanging. In case that isn’t your fancy, everything else on their menu is stellar as well, and you really can’t go wrong. I love this place, and will come here every time I’m in Bloomington. With a great patio in the summer and a cozy cabin-like space for the winter, you really shouldn’t come through without a visit.

they had a surprisingly good vegetarian gumbo! even my husband, who is very picky, liked it! Brat with sauerkraut is banging, fish and chips are the bomb. Fries are great, potato salad ain’t bad either. Beers are good. Duh. Had their sour beer. Good, pricy, but not something i’d particularly have every time i go. Worth a taste though, if you’ve never had it before. Service is spotty, but that’s because they are always so busy. Go with time to spare and chill with friends. Outdoor seating is the way to go!

Come here for the beer, but the food isn’t bad either. Arugula isn’t an easy ingredient to balance, but Upland does it pretty well. Plaintains, soup, and the chimichurri were all up to par, and the presentation was pretty good as well. So where does Upland go wrong? Everything was good except way was supposed to be the principal feature of the plate. I was expecting a lot after the first couple bites, but a tough, overcooked skirt steak was disappointing, and that dissappointment was only amplified by the quality of the rest of it. A poor side dish can be ignored, a low quality, poorly prepared skirt steak cannot. Upland does do a lot of things well though, and its worth coming again for the beer and some better bar food, but I’d be hesitant to go beyond that next time I’m here.

Came in for dinner while traveling for work. Great casual atmosphere engaging and friendly staff. You can tell they are well versed on the different beers and food choices. The beers they are producing are really great, good variety. The food was equally as tasty and unique. I would say this is a must visit of passing through town. Prices are reasonable for the well crafted drinks and food you get. Will have to visit again!
