What a nice place. Friendly, courteous people. Really good fish tacos, margarita and guacamole. With a nice shaded patio. I will stop by again.

Great food, friendly service, great casual ambience under the stars, at very reasonable prices! We got the shrimp dishes — fajitas & spicy shrimp — each with very large shrimps, generously portioned. We took a peek into Carlee’s for dinner, which was warm and smelled stale(since focus seems to be on drinks there), and headed out the door, straight to this place, where happy people were dining outside. Recommended.

Just OK. I won’t go back. Much better options in the area. The portions are small and pricey for what was served.

Delicious salsa and hot sauces. Solid fish burrito. Nice, warm patio on New Years Eve. Can’t beat this kind of desert restaurant. A lot like being in southern Baja.

When I think of carne asada, I think about chunks of deliciously marinated beef that’s juicy and flavorful in each bite. The burrito I ordered had very little flavor and contained very small, dry pieces with the occasional hard mystery chink mixed in. The flauta’s looked and tasted like the frozen taquito’s I buy from Costco.

Delicious Mexican Seafood and burgers! We really liked the shrimp al mojo de ajo and the beef chimichanga. Cozy atmosphere inside, big covered patio outside seems perfect for a cold beer on a desert evening

I guess I’m spoiled, being from San Jose/the Bay Area. I expect my meat to have flavor when I’m chowing down on a burrito. The group I was with kept coming here, and it made it intolerable to eat Mexican food for a few days after I got back. I LOVE taquerias, so a few days is a long time for me. The lack of quality was a shared opinion by many of us. I can say I enjoyed their cheeseburger. It wasn’t pink, even though I ordered it Medium Rare, but it still had flavor. And I may have doused it with jalapeño sauce. If they could just cook with(more?) spices, and offer refried beans as a side alternative, the menu would improve massively.

A true gem. There may be no small desert town in America with as many good places to eat, and this is our favorite, especially when sitting outside(with the quirky uneven carpet covering the ground) looking up at the craggy, razor-toothed San Ysidro mountains at sunset. Simple people, we like the Quesadilla, which is so big we have to split it. We keep trying other places, and keep coming back here.

Three and a half stars. I’d recommend these folks for catering! Our party of 35 or so enjoyed delicious shrimp ceviche, terrific chips with salsa and guacamole(I like thin chips), as well as yummy carnitas and chicken tacos with rice and pinto beans. Though we furnished our own chafing dishes, they provided staff to heat the tortillas and keep food replenished. Oh, the spicy salsa was even better/hotter the next day! Well done! Next time: More guac and less rice and beans, please!

Being a Street Taco Lover’s Jan and I thought we would try this place out. There was good and not so good here that’s why only three stars. First of all its a charming little Taco Joint with great outdoor seating and a small inside seating area. It’s clean and the service was quick, nice and friendly. Started off with two of each type Street Tacos. Lengua /Tongua Asada /Steak Carnitas /Pork Fish Taco’s Simple tacos with only meat, onion, and cilantro and double tortillas. Just The way we like them. There’s no shortage of meat in these tacos. The two sauces a spicy red and a mild green were both very tasty. The Asada and Carnitas were a little dry but good in flavor. The fish was just two fish sticks but surprisingly not all that bad in flavor and texture. Surprisingly the Lengua tacos were the Super Star’s of our visit. Super tender, juicy and fantastic flavor. So good I got four more to take home when we left. In a small town where there isn’t many choices this little stand is more like a 3 ½ Star place. We will come and eat here again just to get though’s Great Lengua Tacos. ENJOY BOB&JAN

Borrego Springs is a quiet little town surrounded by gorgeous desert and mountains. Why it is further spoiled by a barrage of quality Mexican restaurants is beyond me, but El Borrego is one of those distinctly Southwestern places that occasionally make me sad that I live in Tennessee instead. We started out with what should have been a routine affair — chips and guac — and we ended up practically battling each other for the guac. It wasn’t that we had a small portion — it was quite a bit — but it was just that good. I ordered a quesadilla, and it was exactly the kind of plate that made me fall in love with quesadillas in the first place: high quality gooey Mexican cheese, a flour tortilla cooked the perfect point between chewy and crispy, and just the right dose of sheer greasiness. About halfway through, the cook came over and dropped off ANOTHER quesadilla. Turns out I had ordered a chicken quesadilla and they had accidentally brought me a cheese one the first. Even though I genuinely hadn’t even thought about it, let alone asked for a new one, these guys were so committed to the experience that they proactively corrected the error themselves. I find this highly commendable.

On a recent trip to Borrego Springs, I stopped in for some tacos. The café looks like a converted house, very small, and has a ton of knick-knacks covering every square inch of the place. *Think grandma’s house, if she hoarded figurines and other crap* I asked to use the ladies room(typically a clear indication of restaurant cleanliness). It was dated, but clean as a whistle! Whew! I ordered some carnitas tacos — good move. Very tasty. And whatever the red sauce is that is on the table, delicious! It was pretty hot and windy when I visited in April 2014, so I sat inside. If the weather is nice, I’d choose to sit outdoors on my next visit. I feel comfortable recommending the place to my friends and family. Just beware of the angry Chihuahua or Poodle on the patio. He’s a killer…

AVOIDTHEFISHTACOS. That said, there were major differences of opinion amongst the group on the quality of the food. I think it really depends on WHAT you order. I had the Shrimp Enchilada plate and can honestly say it was one of the best I’ve had. Shrimp were fresh & plump with a delicious sauce. Rice was rice and the beans were really good. My buddy had the same thing only with crab(?) and cleaned his plate with a smile. Now the bad news. The wife had fish tacos and left most of it. Fish was frozen fish sticks out of a box. Beans were beans. «How come mine didn’t have the cheese on them like yours?» I felt horrible because I had read the negative reviews on the fish tacos and let her order them. Duh. Good selection of beers and non alcoholic. Friendly, down home service. Bike parking, albeit dirt, in rear so if you eat outside you can keep an eye on things. Clean unisex bathroom. It was $ 28 for 2 of us to eat so I’m a little surprised at the 1 $ rating but I’d still give it 4 stars for a great little hole in the wall Mexican joint that’s a perfect bike trip destination. BUT. when my wife says«my meal sucked», well, 3 stars it is.

We stopped in for a late lunch after a desert hike. The young man at the counter was very friendly and suggested several things that we might want to try. I ordered the fish taco platter and my husband ordered the chili dog and fries. He said that he would bring the food out to us so we took beers out to the patio to wait. When the food was brought out I was very surprised and just started chuckling. I got fish alright. Fish sticks! I would swear they were Gorton out of the yellow box. I have ordered fish tacos all over the country and in all types of places, but this was a first. The chili dog was just OK, canned chili with a slice of American cheese laid over the top. We ate it all because we were very hungry, but won’t return.

I’ve been here a few times usually getting food for the road. Yesterday was a perfect day in Borrego Springs so I slowed down for fish tacos and Negra Modelo on the front patio. If I were staying in town overnight, I would’ve gladly stayed for the afternoon and added more bottles of beer to the table.
