Bad. This place is super cheap, and I’m not talking about the prices. Who wants to pay seven bucks for a potato, go to Wendy’s and save yourself the heartache.

After my last review I received a very kind message from the general manager inviting me to give the place another chance, on him. I was going to take him up on it but then life got in the way… etc. etc. I then decided it would be weird to take in a 4 month old email for a free dinner(plus, I didn’t want anyone to go to an extra special effort making something for me KNOWING I’d be reviewing it — just wanted to try it again with no mention of Unilocal). I did, and do, appreciate the offer and the message, though. It’s always nice when a business genuinely wants to improve and have a dialogue with its customers. Which is why it pains me to write this update — but I feel I have to tell it like I taste it. The other night, I found myself in Spud Brothers sandwiched between two guys who wanted to eat. I wasn’t that hungry(had just eaten a huge plate of drunken noodles), so I didn’t order, but took liberal helpings from each of their plates(thanks, guys!). One of them got the Thai’d up, and the other got the spicy Italian sausage. Thai’d up: As always, the fries themselves were great. Slightly crispy, salty, tasty french fries. It’s the sauce that made me ‘eek’. It had the same ‘freezer’ taste as before… but much stronger… you know, that stale, shut-in, almost moldy taste that accompanies things that have either passed their expiry date or are loaded with preservatives that keep them from HAVING an expiry date. Had it been my dish, I would have probably returned it. It was unclear how fresh the vegetables or the chicken were because everything was drenched in that appalling sauce. Spicy Italian Sausage: Neither spicy nor with any discernable Italian herbs, I could only call this a sausage, and a dull one at that. The bread was stale-ish, and the whole thing was only saved by the mustard, a grainy brown complex concoction. Mango Tea: Tasted exactly like what I imagine Mango PineSol would taste like. I’m sorry, Spud Brothers. You guys are so nice and your website is now pretty neat. You have an awesome concept and you offer some pretty unique mixtures for dinner. You have a scale of healthy for your customers to choose from. But that freezery, moldy, cooped up, preservativey taste… I just can’t handle it.

I do love a good french fry… and I have enjoyed the fries here… with chili and cheese or just plain with a little dipping sauce. I prefered their good ol’ fashioned fried ones to the healthy versions. The half-baked, half-fried were just okay. Let’s face it, if you’re going for fries you may as well go all the way or why bother. Service has been consistently pokey and seemingly disorganized back there behind the counter. And I do think it’s expensive for what you get. But here’s the clincher that really bugs me… I’m convinced that this company that makes it look like a bunch of guys who had a fun concept got together to make a restaurant… is actually not locally owned, was created in a board room, and is owned by some big conglomerate. Can’t remember which one. My source… an ex-employee. I poked around on the web and on their website. No mention of owners… anywhere. No mention of being locally owned. See for yourself, if you care. But if you just need a fry fix, this place is worthy for a bout of PMS. But I now stay away because what you see is not actually what you get behind the scenes. And these days, that matters to me more than ever.

I like the concept of this place, especially since they have sweet potato fries and that’s a good way to get me going. However I wasn’t the biggest fan of the product. The baked fries were way better then the fried ones and the toppings were good, we went with cheese, bacon and sour cream with ranch on the side but I think I could make these at home and they’d be just as tasty. The staff here today wasn’t all that pleasant either. Overall I don’t think I’d be back but I am glad we stopped in. Plus I like the name and my friend is a HUGE potato fan and her eyes doubled when we walked by :)

I love it. Love the varieties, love the concept, hate the price. I think for $ 6 I kinda expected a bigger portion, but I’m aware this is fancy fries… The fries are very good and I love how they allowed us to combine two sauces in one dish. We tried the Sweet Heat and Thai’d Up, both are very good. It’s a perfect, ‘healthy’ afternoon snack. Oh, the place is also using recyclable plates, but if they want to be consistent, I wish they replace their plastic spoons with something more eco conscious like oh I don’t know, toothpicks? :D

Come on, get off your Boulder«I-don’t-eat-wheat-sugar-nightshades-I’m-a-vegan-pagan-frutarian» downer trip and let your tongue do some partying for a change. Just eat the fries! Do it! This place is such a fun oddity, we brought a whole gang of friends who were visiting from out of town. Spuds has all kinds of taters: fried, baked, half-baked. Plus broccoli. Zillions of toppings. 3 kinds of home-made iced tea and lots of other drink choices. We liked the fry sauce, the garlic aoli and the thai topping. Buffalo made the fries too wet. Forget the half-baked fries, why bother to eat anything that’s a healthy pale imitation of the real thing. The iced teas are really good. The guys behind the counter were so nice we wanted to stay and party with them. This restaurant brings to mind a comment by my husband as we drove through Idaho last year. As we passed by the dark, sleek hulk of a radar-packing state trooper, hub said: «Don’t tater me, Bro.» After a visit, we think getting tatered by Spud Bros is a fine snack.

A restaurant that only serves french fries? In the middle of health conscious Boulder? I almost could not believe my eyes as I walked by the newest restaurant on Pearl Street Mall; Spud Bros. The menu consists of french fries; and not much else. You can get your fries baked or fired; then covered with a smattering of various toppings and options. Everything from blue cheese crumbles to classics like chili and ketchup. Prices are very steep; 5 dollars for a small and 8 dollars for a large order. The fries were actually very good; but the value to taste ratio is skewed by the high prices. If you love french fries; check this place out soon; as I doubt it will be there one year from now. Long live the deep fat fried potato!
