I’ve been coming here for 20 years as they are awesome! I first came here 20 years ago when was living in Brookline and was in college. The quality has always been good with a large selection and excellent prices. The food is made fresh hence the open kitchen. I love this tomato and shrimp dish they do which just had again a two days ago and am already craving it again. It’s also family owned and operated. By far the best chinese food in Boston!

I like this place! The food is always freshly made and I am in LOOOOVE w/their general gau’s tofu. The tofu is super crisp on the outside and silky and pillowy on the inside and it soaks up all that sweet/salty/sour sauce and it’s just so bomb. The lunch set comes w/3 crab rangoons which are HUGE and pork fried rice so it’s def. a huge meal. My only complaint is that I wish there were more veggies in the fried rice but at the prices they’re charging, I can’t complain! Keep on doing what you’re doing Dragon Star :) but maybe you shouldn’t offer delivery anymore since it seems that most of the low reviews are coming from hungry customers waiting for their delivery orders…

So we have ordered from this place a few times. The food is ok– we really just like that you can order online. So tonight we order around 6:30 and by 7:45 we’re wondering where our food is. So I open up the confirmation email with all my info and call the number to see if they know when I can expect this food only to find out that they’re computer is broken! The guy doesn’t apologize for even try to offer any type of solution other than«you should really order over the phone»… what!!! I would strongly discourage anyone from ordering from this place. the food is so so and the service is absolutely awful!

Delivery was over an hour. Crab Rangoons were soggy, beef with mixed vegetables had little beef.

Went back hoping they had improved. No such luck. they are worse. The chicken/egg drop sweet corn soup had neither chicken or egg. The vegetarian lo mein had no vegetables. The hunan pork was good, as was Buddha’s delight. However, the service is poor even for a hole in the wall. Never again. There are too many choices in Brookline, even at this price point. Chew Chows is close and far superior.

I ended up here today after realizing neighboring Kamiza Sushi didn’t open until 4! This place is a small walk-up and order Chinese restaurant and my girlfriend and I were the only ones there when we came around 2PM on a Monday. However, between 2 – 2:30 at least 3 more people came in for take-out and dine-in, leading me to believe that it’s somewhat popular due to the odd hour. I ordered a small Chicken and Mixed Vegetables: 7.25 + 0.50 tax = $ 7.75.My girlfriend ordered a small Chicken Fried Rice for 5.50 and I believe her total was $ 5.85. The food came in about 10 minutes and included soy sauce and a fortune cookie. There was much more vegetable than chicken, and after eating all of the chicken and vegetables I liked I just tossed the rest. As such, I don’t consider it a great value since I expect an $ 8 sandwich somewhere else would be two servings. The dish was not very visually appealing – it looked(and tasted) pretty bland. The chicken was fine, and some of the vegetables were tasty – particularly the carrots and broccoli. The other vegetables(onions, mushrooms, three vegetables I wasn’t familiar with), were tasteless. Adding soy sauce didn’t help much because the broth that the dish was cooked in was pretty slimy and coated everything. There was also an odd smell that turned me off(probably one of the vegetables). The chicken fried rice was decent – not bad, but nothing special. Overall, although service was quick at the odd hour, I didn’t think this place was particularly tasty or economical.

Food is decent to average Chinese. Delivery is a joke. 1 hour and 45 minutes and counting tonight. Pickup is the way to go.

Not sure what the bad reviews are for. Been going here for years, great food, huge portions and good service. Best Chinese in the area.

Great staple of Washington Square. The chinese food here is not overly greasy and cooked well. Evidence for this is open kitchen where you can see the cooks cutting the ribs, steaming rice, and frying foods. The foods here are not ordered from the same eery cloned that all americanized chinese food I have had in america. I concur with the writer who is reminded of old Brooklyn chinese mom and pop places. For example, the pork fried rice is home made with large chunks of pork, distinct fresh soy sauce coloring, and different sized vegetable slivers. The family that owns the restaurant are very diligent and dedicated to their restaurant. They’re very friendly. Don’t let the bland entrance fool you — it’s a great find. The dine-in area is not very impressive, though, so it’s best as a take-out restaurant. I recommend the section A combo specials — you get either chicken wings, BBQ ribs(yes!), egg roll, crab rangoon, beef teriaki(yes) or others in addition to plenty of up to 30 meals with pork-fried rice.

Dragon Star was a neighborhood favorite when I lived in Washington Square, Brookline. Their food is tasty, convenient, cheap, and quick! They stay open late(I think 2am), which makes it easy to grab food on the way back from the Golden Temple, Publik House, etc. All Day Combination Plates are the way to go. At around $ 7-$ 8 bucks a piece, you get 2 appetizers(go for Boneless spare ribs or Crab Rangoons), a heaping pile of white or fried rice, and your entrée of choice(Chicken & Broccoli, Beef and Broccoli, and Orange flavor chicken are all good). The best Combination Plate is the Lo Mein noodles. It should be enough for 2 meals. Rice is not included in this selection, but you still get the 2 appetizers. If they tell you that they don’t take credit cards… remind them that they do. Grab the food to go, as it’s not really an eat-in spot.

My family and I have been going to this spot for more years than I can recall. It is not a five star dining experience but for fast food(especially Chinese food) it stands above the rest. I love their crab rangoon, lo mein(veggie, beef, shrimp, etc.) and tasty chicken fingers. Don’t go there looking for Asian fusion. It’s fast food. It’s a nice clean place without too much riff raff hanging around. Plus the Washington Square neighborhood is quite quaint. My only complaint is that they are decreased their portions. No more classic styrofoam plates! They now have the black portioned containers. Other than that I am Dragon Star fan! In fact in 30 minutes I’ll be headed there to pick up my Friday night Chinese!

Such tasty, quick Chinese food. I love this place. It looks like nothing special but it does hole in the wall Chinese right. Try the sczchan spicy chicken and fried wontons. I find my self needing to go here late night for these two. I also really like the lo mein w chicken or roast pork, scallion pancakes, shrimp w lobster sauce, roast pork egg fu yung, fried fried, and real on the bone Chinese spare ribs. Now that I think about it you can’t go wrong! The complementary tea is always super hot and strong too! A staple in Brookline and Washington square.

I’ve been eating here for 15+ years. Same owners… family owned/operated. Good local Chinese and Hong Kong style cooking. Probably not where you’d want to go for your last meal… Not unduly greasy, salty, oily, spicy, and also not inordinately delicious. Solid recipes, consistent quality, no surprises. These people know what they need to do to stay in business and they do it… good food at good prices. There are a few tables to eat it, but primarily a place for take-out. You will not admire the decore… ;-) They sell plenty of food… everything is fresh enough. If you are budget-sensitive, this place is a good choice. Lunch is a dollar less expensive than dinner, and if you order two of the same dish you get a 25% discount. They did recently downsize their dish/takeout container size and the portions seems slightly smaller, but they are still generous. It is not uncommon for me to have enough of the same dish for both lunch and diner. No reason to make a special trip but if you are in the neighb, do give them a try.

Found a metal turning from a scouring pad in my hot and sour soup… A strong reminder as to why I stopped eating here long ago.

This place is decent for what it’s intended to be, just don’t order anything risqué off the menu(i.e. duck). It’s much better than Lucky Wah. Both pricing and portions are in the customer’s favor.

Cheap, fast food. Incredibly greasy… if you’re into that, it’s a good spot. If you’re looking for something authentic and not grease laden, I’d go somewhere else.

Their food is really disappointing. I once got sesame wontons and it was like they just took peanut butter and smeared it on top of a bunch of steamed wontons. Even the Americanized Chinese food is bad. The General Gao’s chicken is a sweet, goopy mess of chicken and food coloring. I guess one redeeming factor about this place is that it is open incredibly late, and so if you’re in the area at 1AM and a 7 – 11 hot dog doesn’t sound appealing, you have mediocre Chinese food available.

So, the very night I wrote my last review, my husband and I ordered in from Dragon Star. I decided to go for something new and on the way to pick up the food, I realized I had forgotten to ask for no mushrooms in my food. I was pretty upset, as I really hate mushrooms(it’s a consistency thing) and they tend to ruin a dish for me. My husband assured me they would remake it for me — I disagreed. He pointed out that we order from there pretty often, so of course they would do it for us. And I ordered a fairly common dish, so they could just give it to the next person to order it. He was wrong. Apparently the man at the counter was somewhat rude and refused to remake the dish for us. Luckily, I was able to pick out the ‘shrooms, but this really put a damper on our experience, especially considering I had JUST written a good review. :(
