C’mon, like. Double with pepper and tamarind. I brought two Irish friends here after a heavy night getting touristic and it literally cured their hangovers before my eyes. I always buy one extra to give to whomever I go to meet after stuffing one into my face before the jealous eyes of others on the train who, if coming from Nostrand, know exactly why my eyes look so shiny and gleeful. Last girl I gave one to was like, «What the eff [she did not say ‘eff’…]!? I can’t stop eating it. What is this!?» Though another friend I gave one to had a definite bathroom experience afterwards — worth it, I’d say, but you can’t please everybody(just most, at A&A.).

As a trini, it is usually hard to find food in the US that is even at least a little comparable to food from back home. However, A&A doubles is a good option when the craving for home food hits. The doubles are decently sized and fairly tasty, but I was a bit disappointed when I asked for heavy pepper and they only put a little. That being said though, their aloo pies are some of the best I’ve had in NY or NJ, so get those! I also highly recommend trying the tamarind balls, the green mango, the salt prunes, and the kurma. Also, here’s a quick tip. It is: 1 doubles, 2 doubles, 3 doubles etc. There is no such thing as a «double». ;)

I frequent this spot. Grab a couple of doubles and head on with my day. But it can be a wait in the mornings and on the weekend, be prepared to wait a bit. The establishment is small and only has room for like four people at a time. The bakes a good but the fish can be salty as hell.

It’s annoying that in this Instagram age, the tastiest foods are sometimes the least photogenic. Take the doubles at A&A — despite its lackluster color, the flavor of this fried pocket filled with curried chickpeas is anything but beige. Make sure to get yours with tamarind to get a sweet-tart contrast to the warm spice. The good people of Trinidad start their day with doubles, and after a visit to A&A, you may reconsider your standard egg and cheese order.

Sooo Good! Love it! A must go to spot from some wonderful Doubles. As an amateur from Texas that has lived in NY for 10+ years, I was upset that I had not tried them before.

I love the spicy doubles, definitely get two or more. I always crave doubles on Sundays but they’re closed on Sundays!

Aaaaa … MAZING. I got 2 doubles, one with pepper and one without. I don’t like spicy food, but the pepper wasn’t spicy at all, it just added a little kick to it. They were a $ 1.50 each and it was super filling, I went on a Saturday morning and I got there around 9⁄930 am and there were about 10 people in front of me, but the line moved very quick. The store is super small, only about 8 people on line can fit in the store, the rest have to stay outside until one person leaves. The line does move very quickly though. I was told that they may run out of food before their closing time, so I would get there early. I believe the place is cash only. I will be returning to try a double with tamarind(its a fruit) sauce. My friend highly recommended it.

100% the most authentic doubles in all of New York. The doubles I had reminded me of the doubles I had in Trinidad when seeing my family. Make sure to get the spicy doubles!

I got the double and the corn beef bake. The double was super messy. I wasn’t blown away by the double but it is alright. I would not go out my way for this but I would stop in for one if I was in the area which I am rarely am. As for the corn bee bake, I thought it was easier to eat than the double but it doesn’t have much repeat value.

Got the doubles. Couldn’t have been happier. When I was told about the Chana in fried bread I expected the bread to be ticker and heavier than it was — but I’m glad. They were little, stretchy, thin, and doughy. The Chana hit the nail on the head and the spicy sweet sauce gave it a kick from all cylinders — flavor explosion! Can’t beat the price too!

The doubles and bakes are good and fresh. But service sucks and they are routinely running late to open in the morning. You cant just go and expect to get your food and go, be prepared to wait if you really want it. :-(

Compared to other doubles I had, this place makes the best double. It is a bit messy when you eat it so I suggest you grab extra napkins. Nothing can beat this price.

Phenomenal. The place is right by my apartment, but I’d gladly travel a long distance for the doubles, which are cheap and amazing. Get at least two, and get them spicy. The bakery has a bunch of other great stuff, too, like fish pies, all of it fresh and delicious. Make sure you get to A&A for breakfast or lunch, because it closes up when the food runs out, sometimes by mid-afternoon.

*Does a double take at the review guessing that doubles is made with pita bread… lord have mercy… why you can’t trust some of these reviews* Anyway, Yes, Amazing. The bake is delicious and so are the doubles, it rivals de hot pot for the best doubles I’ve had in Brooklyn. The bake is hands down the best I’ve ever had and it’s such a simple concept, salt fish with a bunch of onions, it’s heavenly. If you are like me and are very sensitive to pepper do not ask for it because I’m sure they use scotch bonnet in theirs and my lips and mouth were burning the hell out of me.

The doubles are delish, but the best thing here in my opinion? The bake with saltfish. With lots of hot sauce, Matouk’s if you have it. Get there early as they close once they run out of food(3ish?).

A&A’s are always on point! It’s a small family run joint that opens early and closes even earlier(depending when they run out of food basically). A&A’s secret ingredient is definitely LOVE, and you can taste it in copious amounts in their unique offerings! If there was a way to give a place more than 5 stars, this place deserves so much more. There is nothing else like it, and there’s a reason why there’s always a line of hungry and excited folks waiting to get their paws on their food! No worries though, the line moves just fast enough! I generally always order the bakes with pumpkin and spinach, slight pepper and tamarind, or you also can’t go wrong with the doubles, the alou pie(potato pie), or the phoulorie. Everything is baked so fresh and their spices are absolutely incredible. I’ve eaten here no less than 40 times in the past 3 months or so! I’ve tried doubles, alou pies and phoulorie at other places around town and none of them can compete!!! Make sure to request tamarind sauce with the pepper sauce for the best flavor balance! All of their sauces are insanely delicious.

«A double order of doubles. And make it on the double, or I’ll be doubly peeved!» The first sentence could be my typical order at A&A, likely affixed with a please. The full quote might as well have been the order of the guy behind me in line recently. The man asked if I had ordered, yet practically during my reply in the negative he materialized at the register, already paying for his two doubles. But hey, his car was illegally parked, so what right had I to hold him up? A doubles is basically a well-seasoned fried bread filled with a chana masala-like stuffing. Here there is an option of a tamarind sauce, which neither helps nor hinders in my opinion and a spicy pepper sauce which adds a welcome Caribbean flair. A&A calls themselves the doubles king, but they may as well be the doubles queen, ace and jack too. Maybe even the doubles ten. In fact, I coronate two tasty A&A doubles the best value lunch in Brooklyn at a mere $ 3.00. Were MLB players individually sponsoring businesses on their uniforms, Daniel Murphy would be the perfect representative for A&A. But it’s just as well he’s not, because then the price of a doubles would have to double. Saltfish and smoke herring bakes are a little more hit and miss, though their ceilings do rate as delicious. When they’re on a fish bake is also a steal at $ 3 each. Apparently the default option for the bake itself is the tastier fry version. When as usual I did not specify for a recent order and the shop was running low on food, my bake was assembled with the sada, rather dry and pretty bland, albeit surely healthier. I rationalize that the heart-healthy fish oils in the herring more than make up for a bake being fried. That sort of thing is the one issue with A&A. It is a small shop, preparing breads and other foods daily, which is great, but also means they are inclined to run out of foods well before their official closing at 3PM. That day I was given a sada bake, there was not a doubles remaining and it couldn’t have been past 1:30. Another day at about the same time A&A was out of food entirely. Usually that’s not the case so early, but at 2:30 it’s about 50 – 50 they’ll have anything left. A couple of times when I passed by more like noon, they must not have opened at all as the place was shuttered(I’ve basically been going once a week this past year). You might give A&A a call first before heading over to make sure they’ll have what you want available. Or you could go around the corner to Ali’s Roti shop, where they also can serve you a doubles. But then Ali’s isn’t the king of doubles or even the jack of doubles; more like the seven or eight.

Not that this place needs another fantastic review, but… I finally got to try A&A today. When I moved to the neighborhood a few weeks back, I noticed it immediately. I walk past the place on my way to the train. This small shop, well disguised under thick scaffolding, had a line six people deep, at 6:45 in the morning. I normally can’t eat that early, so I had to pass. The next morning, same line. Every day I go to the train, there’s a line out the door. They close early, so I usually miss their opening hours. But today, I got the chance to finally try their famous double and it was amazing. The pita(?) bread was delicious and moist. The filling, which I got spicy, was ridiculously good, sweet-hot and creamy. And it was $ 1.50. If you get a chance to try A&A, I highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed.

Where do I begin? If I could eat here every day and not feel gross, I would. Doubles are so good and so affordable at $ 1.50. I get two doubles and I am set for lunch. You HAVE to get them spicy. It’s not too hot, and the slight sweetness mixed with the heat is so mouthewateringly good. The line here moves fast. I’m honestly surprised that it’s not longer. I had my first doubles experience here a month ago and I’ve been thinking about how good they are ever since. I wish so badly this place was open longer, but it’s probably for the best because I would have them for every meal of the day!

If you’ve ever been to an AA meeting, then you know how addictive alcohol can be. What you may not know is that there are now A & A meetings, because of how f***ing insalely addictive Doubles can be. What to get: Doubles. What else: What kind of Ds do I like? Doubles. By the way, I wonder what A & A stands for. During this review we’ll try and figure it out. This little Caribbean Bake shop on Nostrand Ave close to Queens Blvd is everything you expect from a little shack in the Caribbean… only it’s in New York City. It’s dark on the inside, but the food is cheap, cheerful, delightful and delicious. A & A: the two things that many New York men are obsessed with. Ass & Amphetamines. The star of the show is the«Doubles», and even if you order just one, it is still«a Doubles.» I prefer the Doubles down the street at Royal Bakery, but nevertheless, these ones are very very good. Some of the best in Brooklyn, I might add. And therefore, the country. The Aloo Pie is also excellent. A & A: a horrible ice cream flavour which would probably be a big seller in Williamsburg. Apple & Artichoke. Make sure you get an extra shot of the spicy stuff inside, because that way the Doubles will blow your head off, and given the penchant of local criminals for random shootings(well not any more, but there was a time when Bed-Stuy wasn’t the safest part of the world), you’ll agree that it’s better to have your head blown off by a Doubles, than by some guy high on a cocktail of illegally trafficked substances. A & A: what Dungeons & Dragons players grow up to obsess over: Animé & Asians. Stop by, and grab a Doubles here, at Royal, and at Ali’s, and see which one you like best. Saltfish Pie and Salmon Bakes and such, are even more delicious(arguably), if anyone has them. Nom nom nom. Hopefully places like this stay in business always(and the lovely David Brisket House just down the block, not to mention Royal Bakery), because we need them, and Brooklyn wouldn’t be Brooklyn without them. And finally… A & A: Fave mood for sex & fave type of sex: Animalistic & Anal.

Best doubles in Brooklyn. Always hot and fresh with the flavor(with pepper) always on point. Try the aloo pie and Saheena as well! Nice and quick service. In and out in less than 5 minutes most of my visits. Closet to thing to being in Trinidad.

Due to some misunderstanding or maybe it was deliberate delivery of misinformation, I came here with my Trini friend who told me that bakes and doubles were made of chickpeas. I happily accompanied her on a really cold day and ate my food, unknowingly ingesting gluten. Have to say it was worth it. And for around $ 3.75 I had breakfast AND lunch to boot. I got the salmon and egg bake plus some doubles w/tamarind sauce. Come early and be prepared to line up. Cash only.

About a 2.5: My husband and I made a trek out to A&A Bake & Doubles Shop, considering how popular this place was for their breakfast breads. It’s an extremely small Trinidadian carry-out place(no eat-in, only carry-out), where they specialize in ‘bakes’ and ‘doubles.’ The ‘bake’ is a deep-fried, made-to-order bread that is filled with your choice of fillings(cod fish, red herring, salmon, eggs, and/or vegetables); the ‘doubles’ is a thin bread(roti-like) that is filled with chickpeas and a ‘spicy’ sauce on top. They only allow about 2 – 3 people inside the small eatery — just keep an eye out until the staff inside motions for you to come in. You let them know what you want, assemble it for you right then and there, wraps it up in wax paper, places your order in a brown paper back with some paper, and then you pay in cash. Each are about $ 3. I had a chance to eat a ‘salt fish bake’ and a ‘double.’ The salt bake was okay — definitely piece of salted dried fish with some sliced red onions, all in an arepa-esque bread. I wasn’t a fan of the ‘double,’ as the chickpeas were not savory as I expected it to be, but more on the sweeter side; the ‘spicy’ sauce had a nice kick, but I wished the chickpeas filling was tastier. In addition, I felt as if it didn’t complement the roti-like bread. This place seemed really popular, as there was already a line early in the morning. I’m glad I was able to check this place out, but not sure if I’d go back! +carry-out only +cash only +only 2 – 3 people allowed inside at a time(wait for them to motion you in when you’re up next)

My sis and I were going to do a compare and contrast on doubles between this location and another doubles location nearby. But we ended up getting too full from the first location and never made it here. =( A few weeks later, my sister’s friend wanted to do a doubles crawl, try doubles from different locations. This spot was first on our short list. We each ordered one double, with everything. There were no seats inside so we ended up standing outside to eat. There was a small table with a bench but it was occupied by two chicks, who were just chatting, they were done with their food.(move b*%#$!!!, can’t you two see we’re trying to eat!!!). Very messy to eat when you’re standing with no table. The double was nice and hot. The bara was soft and the channa was very flavorful. I really enjoyed this location’s double. I would definitely return for some more doubles and to try their other menu items.

I could have sworn that I reviewed this spot before, but nonetheless, it is fantastic. The doubles are the best in the BK and if ready(or of the haven’t run out) you can get it with pumpkin, spinach or saltfish in addition to the requisite chick pea mixture and tamarind sauce. The additions cost extrs, FYI. It’s not always too crowded and the lines move pretty quickly. The fried bakes are too oily for me but still tasty. If they served egg & saltfish as a side I probably wouldn’t have mentioned that! All in all A&A is as good as it gets. A word to newbies, this is street food so don’t buy it in the AM and expect it to stay together through rewarming efforts for lunch.
