This place is 2 blocks from my house. It’s fast, convenient and consistent. The place is also kept very clean and the staff is friendly.

The décor is super-tacky and the«service» was just some kids who didn’t even know what some of the items on the menu were, but the food was largely excellent, especially the kabobs, which were perfectly prepared, some of the best I’ve had in the city. The fried potatoes with mushrooms were a bit disappointing, however. This dish is difficult to mess up(Café Dushanbe in Sheepshead Bay makes a particularly great version), but here the potatoes were cut into squares instead of into slices as they should be and the wrong kinds of mushrooms were used, so that the result was a soggy, greasy concoction without much flavor. We were trying to avoid wheat, and the pear dessert was very good.

If you are a true foodie and want to experience something completely unique, try Almaz. I have eaten all over Manhattan to Brooklyn to LIC covering street food to high end on a hunt to keep my taste buds satiated. Almaz is a cross between Russian, Eastern European and Mediterranean and I can’t express in words how delicious the dishes are. We had a group of 10 go and we ordered the special set menu. There was smoked fish, pickled fruits and Veges, amazing seafood and fresh green salad, butterfish that melts in your mouth, lobster w/homemade noodles, beef tongue, grilled quail, bbq lamb chops, Dumplings, salmon wrapped in crepes with caviar, the Almaz salad was Amazing, potato mushroom dish is s must have. Basically it was a feast and super affordable considering how much high quality food you get. Friday Saturday nights, they provide live entertainment which is an experience on its own. I thought I was no longer in NY but somewhere in Eastern Europe circa 1990. Hands down food and service is why you would travel out of the way to try Almaz. Everything is made from scratch. This is a hidden gem.
