Big Apple kind of makes me feel like I’m grocery shopping in a hoarder’s basement. I’m glad the lighting’s not any better, because I’d probably be blown away by this treasure trove. I agree that Rossman’s has cheaper produce, but Big Apple is a good option if you’re running errands on 5th Avenue anyway. Or if you’re looking for something completely random. A bag of dehydrated porcini mushrooms. A bucket of bean sprouts. Ten varieties of Sriracha. Etc. Et al. Not that it matters, but I have never been subpoenaed by Lilly. Normally she is completely absorbed by a soap opera or the U.S. Open or something and I have to gently ask her if she would mind taking my money so I can leave.

The owner lady in here cracks me up. Everything is delicious to her, whether it’s tamari, rice vinegar, broccoli… it doesn’t matter. I could be buying cat food and she’d go «Oh that’s delicious, very good!» Even when I get scowled at for using a credit card it comes across as hilarious. She’s also voiced her opinion multiple times about the wine store a block away(«Too expensive!»), preferring — of course — the Korean place down on 5th(Bay River). Anyway, the produce here is okay. Sometimes it can look a little sketchy, but I mainly come here just to grab an item or two that I need right away.

My husband gets all our produce here on the daily(he’s the cook), and he likes it a lot for the convenience and quality. The owner is pretty hilarious and as Carlos C. says will inundate you with questions about your personal life… but if you shop there enough she will also start to give you discounts on things and sometimes even freebies here and there. And she’s always sure to comment on the good prices you’re getting, which generally, is true.

This was where I got all my fresh produce when I lived right around the block. The older asian woman/owner is sweet and caring in her own way. People may think that asking all those questions is a bit nosy, but it’s endearing and shows care. «Have you eaten, are you married, how much do you make? where did you go to school?» yadda yadda yadda. The cat here is sweet too!

I tend to like shopping at both Eagle and Big Apple. I drop by Eagle to pick up the protein, then skip over to Big Apple for the herbs and produce. Together, they’re a match made for Brooklyn.

I’ve been coming to this place ever since 1990. This place has a great selection of produce. It is family owned. And the owner Lilly is always asking me questions. I feel like am getting interrogated by the CIA or the FBI. But I found a new and better place and it goes by the name of Rossman Farms. Sorry Big Apple, I found a cheaper spot to shop around. PS– the(tuxedo)cat at Rossman is way more friendlier than the one in Big apple.

Big Apple is a great neighborhood produce grocery store. Their produce is fresher and and cheaper than Eagle Provisions or Associated. The owners are very friendly and personable. Everyone in the neighborhood stops by this place at one point or another because they realize it’s a great place to shop too.

Big Apple is the best place to get produce within 10 blocks of 19th St. and 5th Ave. It’s also the only place. The quality is pretty high but the owner, Lily, and her cat, Lady, make the place a must-visit. Lily is friendly, often hilarious, and adamant about assuring customers they are receiving the best deals. Lady wanders around legs seeking out pats and looking amused. The family-owned character of this cozy grocery store makes it a rarity in this increasingly chain-store economy.
