Love the music and the mac’n’cheese. And the waitress working ALLBYHERSELF is a darling and a saint. Such a fun place to be!

Let me start by saying the 2 stars are for the bartender cause she was a pleasure. 60th birthday for my mom paid over 2grand for bullshit. The people seem nice enough but don’t be fooled. Party was supposed to start at 7, we get there at 6:30p.m. and that’s when they decide they want to mop, start blowing up balloons and other things that should have been done from the start. We paid for dinnerware that were never placed on the table, we had no servers, we had so called unlimited drinks that they would only serve at dinner time in plastic cups the extra small ones. WTFFFF so many things were off about this place I would need to write a book. They even snuck and ate our food from Platters we had in the fridge. People take your hard earned money and go somewhere else. These people make black people look bad. They have a lot to learn.

I came here for the birthday party of my friend’s aunt. I will admit that the music was good and it was nice to walk in without there being a required cover. So thanks for that Brown Sugar! Now, keep in mind that the average age of people in the crowd is probably 50. This isn’t negative, but certainly something you should know before coming(I didn’t exactly). The drinks are reasonably priced, people actually come out to dance and the staff members were amenable to our need for space and cutting of a birthday cake. There were certainly some interesting moments throughout the night. I can’t exactly see myself back here for the next 20 years unless it’s for a birthday party or invited event.

Had the time of my life! I partied with people almost double my age, but it was fun! The bartender was a real jerk. She did not make great drinks and she was not friendly. The club was pretty large for the neighborhood so there was plenty of room to move and dance around. The bathrooms were disgusting. I was shocked seeing how the crowd was older. I would have thought they were cleaner. Because this was a random visit, not really looking for fun, I can’t say I’ll go back. But for my older Unilocalers, check it out!

Sooo, My family reserved the lounge/restaurant to celebrate my grandmother’s 81st Birthday. Kinda dark but Simple color scheme, tables & chairs have seen better days but the price appeared promising. $ 2500 for 80ppl, 4 hrs with food and drink approximately $ 30 per person… not too bad. However, the food was not acceptable, service was mediocre(random guy walking throughout venue to check sockets) & professionalism(What is that?) Food… Appetizer — Choice of meatballs(you are only getting 2 of the compacted mystery meat) or 2 chicken fingers(if only I had utensils to cut these suckers up) Entrée — Buffet of Macaroni & Cheese(where’s the cheese), rice & peas(when was this cooked), Baked Chicken(Dry oh Dry), Salmon(decent) and there goes those meatballs and chicken fingers again. Can’t forget the vegetables(resembled school lunch). Drinks — Cola, poured straight from the bottle into plastic cup(Yes, plastic cup a lil bigger than mouth wash cups). Lemonade(ok) I gave this place 2 stars because the DJ was great, he kept us from thinking about the mess that we paid for. It’s sad that you give your business to people with the hopes of receiving the best. The neighborhood is not great but I’ve been to many other establishments that make up for what they lack in appearance. A reference is the best Tip and sorry but this place will not get it from me or the additional 79 ppl that we paid for.

Today is one of those Sunday’s that I just didn’t feel like cooking so I decided to check out to see if there were any new restaurants added for my area. To my surprise Brown Sugar Bar & Restaurant delivers(I know it says Brown Sugar Club on Unilocal but I promise you it’s the same place). As always, I turned to Unilocal for reviews as well as the reviews on and as you will see for yourself the previous reviews are not that great BUT I decided to give it a try anyway. I ordered the rotisserie chicken with collard greens and mac n’ cheese plus two extra side orders: steamed cabbage and mashed potatoes. Well let me give you the good first: –Delivery: Given 35 — 45 min. delivery time and my food arrived in approximately 1 hour(not bad). In addition, the delivery guy was pleasant and had a smile on his face; he even wished me a good evening(Gold Star!) –Temperature of food: HOT(Gold Star!) –Complete order?: Yes but my utensils were missing. Okay now let’s get down to the good and not so good: –On there were no options with the rotisserie chicken. I couldn’t choose between dark or white meat so I assumed it was a ½ chicken; to my surprise they chose a drumstick and thigh for me… hmmm ok! The chicken parts were not a major issue for me but the dryness was! I’m not sure how long that chicken was cooked but it seemed as though it sat under a heat lamp a little too long and/or the chicken was just overcooked. The seasoning on everything was pretty good! The greens were cooked nicely and not too salty which is great for me. The mashed potatoes seemed to be missing milk/cream and had maybe a dash too much pepper BUT I love potatoes so tomorrow night I’ll just add some sour cream… that should do it. The mac n’ cheese was not mac n’ cheese… it was more like macaroni pie. THEREIS A DIFFERENCE. It seemed like the cheese was just on top and I was a bit disappointed with it. Mac n’ Cheese should have CHEESE throughout!!! The steamed cabbage was good but I had to pick out lima beans and green peas. Not quite understanding why they were even in there in the first place. The reason why I’m giving them three stars is because I’m willing to order from them again just to see if it gets better. The overall taste was promising and there were only a few minor issues. Also, I have to try the oreo cheesecake one day so that dessert will be in my next order. Until next time folks…

I had high hopes when Brown Sugar announced they would be open for Dinner nightly, and I gave them some time to work out the kinks, but alas… My partner is a sucker for sampler platters so we ordered the appetizer sampler and the ribs. I was a little surprised when the waitress came back o let me know that they only had enough ribs for a ½ rack(decently priced at $ 12) but I rolled with it. The appetizer platter came out first. The Fried Shrimp and Chicken strips were pretty good and they came with a nice honey mustard dressing. The wings were fine, the spring rolls were fine. The crab cakes were not awesome. They are so heavy on bread crumbs that they taste basically like the mixture used to stuff flounder. The spicy coleslaw had a weird metallic taste. The Ribs were better than average, but you have to do better than that when you are located a block from both Calvin’s Royal Rib house and Peaches. Mac and Cheese was pretty good. Collard greens might have been the best thing on the plate.

This review is only for their delivery service. DONOT order delivery from them unless you want your order to come an hour late, despite the fact that you live less than a mile away. I just ordered from them last night. I thought the cajun chicken sandwich with avocado sounded great! To top it off, it also came with fries. However, when they delivered my order, not only was I starving, but the sandwich had NO fries with it, NO avocado on it, and only 3 measly strips of roasted red pepper. It was also lukewarm – Not OK. Needless to say, I will not be ordering from them again.

I like the nostalgic ambience of the Brown Sugar Club & Restaurant. Open Mike on Thursday night is great! Friendly crowd. The finger foods and the food platters are very good– they have a wonderful chef.

It’s always a treat to go to the Sugar Bar. Nick and Val are the most gracious hosts there are. The food is very tasty and the staff is at your beck and call. The music is outstanding. But what would you expect from these world class entertainers. If I weren’t so stage frightened, I’d get up sing along during their Open Mike on Thursday night. Lastly, the band is fantastic. Five stars!
