I’d always wanted to get tattooed by a woman. Unfortunately, women tattoo artists are still pretty rare. I looked in dozens of Manhattan parlors; I found a couple female artists, but something was always not working out. They were either too booked or too expensive or both. Imagine my surprise when I found a woman working out of a small tattoo parlour /store just blocks away from my parents’ apartment! The place is hidden in a mall on Emmans, and since the mall looks kind of prohibiting and creepy, I never bothered going in there. I checked it out on a whim, and that’s when I met Canri Ann. She tattooed my toes. It hurt like none of my other tattoos, but she managed to make the experience fun, telling me weird and funny stories, gossiping a bit about people I didn’t know, and being generally nice and warm. She put a bit too much ink into one of my tattoos, and it took a while to heal, leaking and peeling more than the others. I was worried that she had screwed it up, but I shouldn’t have: after a while, it settled, and still looks as great today as it did back then!
